[Game Thread] Wings vs. Blackhawks
The Wings head to Chicago for their first match-up against the Blackhawks of the season and their first game of a five-game road trip. The game starts at 8:30pm (EST) and will feature an unveiling of both teams' jerseys for the upcoming 2009 Winter Classic. We'll be able to see them during the first intermission on FSN Detroit.
Ty Conklin will get the start in goal for Detroit and it looks like defenseman Andreas Lilja won't return until Monday's game against the Kings.
I will be around during the game so please stop by. I'd love to hear from you!

Roster Update
The game hasn’t started yet, but we have some line-up changes for tonight’s game. Andreas Lilja will actually be playing tonight so Derek Meech is a healthy scratch. Darren McCarty is also returning from injury (a sore groin) and Kirk Maltby will be a healthy scratch as well.

Already hearing it...
Before the game even starts, we can easily hear the “Detroit Sucks” chant by the Chicago fans…I heard that way too much this summer (I was living in downtown Chicago).

Franzen!!
The Mule scored his fifth goal of the season (now a four game point streak). Henrik Zetterberg passed the puck to Johan Franzen, who was to the right of Khabibulin just behind the red line. He then brought the puck near the middle of the crease and backhanded it in to give the Wings the early lead. The goal came on a power play goal (Chicago had been called for tripping Marian Hossa). The Wings have had a 33% success rate (10-for-30) on the power play in October, which is the highest in a month since 1986.

Chicago scores to tie the game up at one apiece
Chicago scores their first goal of the game, also on the power play. Conklin lets up a juicy rebound, but Kris Versteeg chips the puck in for his second goal of the season.

Unveiling of jerseys
Both teams unveiled their Winter Classic jerseys during the first intermission of tonight’s game.
Old English D on the front with Winged Wheels on the shoulders with string ties and a Winter Classic patch for Detroit’s jersey. I do like that it combines the vintage jersey yet acknowledges the iconic Winged Wheel on the shoulders. The Blackhawks’ jersey seems more subdued in nature.
“We’re proud to represent the rich history of the Detroit Red Wings and the City of Detroit,” said Red Wings Executive Vice President and General Manager Ken Holland. “The Old English ‘D’ served as the hockey team’s very first logo and is widely recognized as a symbol for our city and its sports teams.”
“These retro jerseys only strengthen what is going to be a historic day for our organization, the NHL and the city of Chicago,” Blackhawks Senior Vice President of Business Operations Jay Blunk said. “The Blackhawks and Red Wings logos are second to none in professional sports and seeing them on these jerseys only makes us more excited for the Winter Classic. We look forward to seeing our fans sporting our jersey around town as we count down the days to January 1.”
There is still no word on how many Winter Classic tickets will be available to Red Wings fans.

They kind of look like pajamas, a little. But not too bad.
I guess I’m just not much of a retro gal.

I'm not either, but...
I’m not usually one into the retro/vintage jerseys, but I actually like the Wings. I would even consider buying it. I’m not saying I will, but it’s unique enough for me to add to my jersey collection.

Lilja is one tough guy. To be back that fast after an appendectomy? Wow.
Then again, I’ve never had any kind of surgery or stitches or anything, and needles terrify me to profanity, so I’m impressed by anyone who can talk casually about their surgical procedures. :)
I’ve noticed the Wings seem to do better if I ignore them, so I’m paying attention to Montreal for a while to throw the team off. Never too early for starting silly superstitions!

Haha.
Well if that’s the case, keep it up!
As someone who has had 12 surgeries, I am still shocked to see him return that quickly. And you know what, it’s not even like we needed him to get back right away (unlike Nick Lidstrom) so I definitely was surprised to see him back so soon.

Someone didn't get the memo.
Geez, Lebda – stop doing that! I’m not paying attention to you, so you can play okay now!

Seriously.
Maybe he got nervous with so many friends and family members in attendance. Either way, I’m hoping that was his last!

Agreed.
Two games in a row is too much.

Wings games in consecutive days? Or are you saying watching two hockey games in a row is too much?

turnovers
Wasn’t it last game that a goal went in off his skate?
It’s kind of blurring together. I’ve been DVRing the games and watching later, so it gets a little confused. (I still haven’t seen the St. Louis game yet.)

I'm not sure.
Like you said, it does all blur together. Sorry I can’t be of more help!

Blackhawks score goal #2
Aaron Johnson’s wrist shot trickles behind Ty Conklin to get a one goal lead over Detroit. The goal came as a result of a Brett Lebda turnover in the neutral zone. In an unrelated note, Lebda had to get over 30 tickets for friends at tonight’s game. He is from just outside Chicago so he has plenty of friends and family wanting tickets to see him play.

Hossa keeps scoring!
Aaron Johnson got sent to the penalty box and Marian Hossa scores on a one-timer to tie the game up. He has 9 points in the past six games and is on a six game point streak.
I’m loving the fact that Hossa seems to finally be clicking with his new team.

first goal opened the floodgates
Ken and Mickey figured that once he scored he’d get a bunch. First with a new team, first of the season, a big round number for his career – there were just too many stupid milestones associated with the one stupid goal.
Speaking of stupid, the Anaheim – Montreal game was insane.
YIKES! Don Cherry looks like a giant lavender Easter egg!

Haha.
I haven’t seen Cherry’s suit tonight, but I can only imagine how bad it is.
I saw him in person at the Joe in the postseason and he wore this long tan trench coat that made me laugh when I saw it. Him and his crazy fashion…

My eyes!
It was a shiny lavender kind of paisley embossed thing.
Not quite like the draperies from an Oriental brothel, but only because their color schemes aren’t normally pastels. Not that I have any experience with such places, but I’ve seen movies.

Ugh. Chicago scores again.
Martin Havlat scores just after the Wings penalty expires. It’s his third of the season. Ugh.

I'm cursed!
Flip over to the Wings and it’s just in time to hear the horn for Chicago.
I’ve learned my lesson. Back to the Oilers and Canucks for me. (DVR is a wonderful thing.)

Franzen gets injured.
Uh oh. Franzen just left the ice with an apparent knee injury. Hopefully it’s nothing major.
by Christy on Oct 25, 2008 8:57 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Franzen will not return.
FSN reports that Johan Franzen will not return tonight to the game. The severity of the injury is unknown. Hopefully this is just a precaution, they’ll take the appropriate tests, and we’ll see Franzen back on the ice before you know it.

Blackhawks lead 4-2
Brent Sopel took a shot from the point after the Hawks won the face-off and it was re-directed underneath Conklin’s arm. Crap.

Kronner scores!
Niklas Kronwall gets off a quick shot to score his first goal of the season and gets the Wings within a goal. He also notched an assist on Hossa’s earlier goal tonight.

Datsyuk = Amazing
I think Pavel Datsyuk was jealous of all the attention last night’s Hossa goal was getting so he just owned Khabibulin with a backhand beauty. It was a one hand goal, which Ken Daniels called a classic Datsyukian Deke!
The goals came just 1:38 apart and the game is now tied up. Chicago immediately called a time out to settle their team down.

New superstition ...
Apparently I not only have to ignore the game live at all costs and watch after the fact, but I also have to read a book so I’m not tempted to use the remote for a peek. I’ll try that until it stops working.

Kane ties it up.
Crap, Patrick Kane scores to even the game up with a 5-on-3 advantage (Kronwall and Cleary were in the box). Chicago remains on the power play. Crap.

Stay out of the penalty box!
The Wings get called for another penalty. It will be the Hawks eighth power play while Detroit only has three.
Come on guys, you need to stay out of the box if you want to win such a close, high scoring game!

FYI – Hudler, Kronwall, and Hossa each have a goal and two assists in tonight’s game.

For a second, it looked like he might lose the puck, but that was just Datsyuk waving his stick over the puck and scores!

It looked like Jiri Hudler was going to score, but Khabibulin grabbed it before it crossed the goal line.

It was a hard slap shot that went above Khabibulin’s left glove.

I do, but it was much more enjoyable watching Wings win tonight!
Hope you have a great Sunday as well. It’s a good thing that the Lions game is blacked out so I won’t be distracted by that and can just focus on my homework instead…
Good night everybody!
