Wings trying to trade Quincey

According to a source, Ansar Khan reports that GM Ken Holland is calling up GMs around the league hoping to trade defenseman Kyle Quincey. The Wings need to trade him to make room under the salary cap and he would have to clear waivers to make it to Grand Rapids. We all know he won't make it to GR so Holland is trying to trade him. Quincey does not have to be traded today because the Wings are under the cap, but Holland is hoping to trade him before the season opener on Thursday evening so that they can have 13 forwards on the roster.

"We're talking (to other teams about trading Quincey)," said general manager Ken Hollad. "Right now, on the short term, we can keep our players. ... Ultimately at some point in time, once McCarty and Chris Chelios come off, we're going to have to make some moves. We're going to cap out. ... Do we do something here in the next day or two or do we wait?"

The team had to reach its 23 man roster limit by 3pm on Wednesday and did so by sending Ville Leino, Aaron Downey, Darren Helm, and Jonathan Ericsson to GR earlier today. Downey is the only one who has to clear waivers to make it to GR. Darren McCarty is suffering from a sore groin and Jimmy Howard is out with a broken finger so they will be placed on the injured reserved list with Chris Chelios and will remain in Detroit.

"Today we assigned Ville Leino to Grand Rapids and we assigned Jonathan Ericsson to Grand Rapids, and Darren Helm to Grand Rapids," general manager Ken Holland said. "We’ve informed Downey he’s been put on waivers, and we’ll address that situation tomorrow. Jimmy Howard, Darren McCarty and Chris Chelios will start the year on injured reserve."

As it stands right now, here are the Wings' lines below for the 22 man roster:

Tomas Holmstrom - Pavel Datsyuk - Marian Hossa

Johan Franzen - Henrik Zetterberg - Jiri Hudler

Dan Cleary - Valtteri Filppula - Mikael Samuelsson

Tomas Kopecky - Kris Draper - Kirk Maltby

Defense:
Nicklas Lidstrom - Brian Rafalski

Niklas Kronwall - Brad Stuart

Brett Lebda - Andreas Lilja

Derek Meech - Kyle Quincey

Goalies:
Chris Osgood
Ty Conklin
