Wings don't travel as far as you'd guess

Over at Kukla's Korner, the Forechecker has put together a pretty thorough Google spreadsheet that looks at the miles logged by each team as they travel this season as well as the number of back-to-back games.

Detroit has 39,642, which sounds like a lot. However, there are 16 other teams that have to travel further than the Wings, which I was pretty surprised by to be honest. I figured the more west coast teams would log more miles but to see the Florida Panthers and Atlanta Thrashers with more was not what I would have predicted.

In terms of back-to-back games, Detroit has 16 this season. The Columbus Blue Jackets lead the pack with 20 games while Colorado only has eight, which is crazy since no other team has below 11 games.

I guess I shouldn't complain too much about the schedule now that I know the Wings are about average in both categories.

It’s surprising to me too. I thought the Wings would travel more too. It’s easy to understand the west coast teams and the extreme southern teams traveling so many miles because their divisions are so spread out and they play intra-divisions games more than others.
