[Game Thread] Wings vs. Avalanche

The Detroit Red Wings (23-7-4) finish up their two-game road trip tonight in Denver when they take on the Colorado Avalanche (17-16-1) at the Pepsi Center.

The Avs will be without Joe Sakic (broken fingers) and Paul Stastny (fractured forearm), but in an effort to even the playing field it looks like captain Nicklas Lidstrom will be out tonight after blocking a shot with his foot in last night's loss to Nashville. Expect Ty Conklin to get the start in goal as Chris Osgood still isn't quite ready to return yet.

Please stop by to say hi and comment on the action. If you're looking for the view from the Avs' perspective, be sure to check out Mile High Hockey.

The game begins at 9pm and will be shown on FS Detroit Plus. To view the channel listings, please visit their website. Go Wings!

Avs have scored three goals in the first period.

Not good at all. Talk about digging a hole for yourself…

Oh.

All 3 goals were power-play goals.

The Avs is 3/3 so far tonight.

Datsyuk scores PPG!

Wings finally get a goal!

Pavel’s initial shot was blocked, but he was able to put in the rebound. He now has 14 points in the last seven games.

Johan Franzen ties it up.

Holmstrom and Rafalski get the assists.

Franzen scores from the bottom of the right faceoff circle hitting the net just below the crossbar.

Penalties galore.

Wings had the first six of seven penalties.

The Avs have had the last four.

Things I've Noticed This Game

- Holmstrom is still very much a key to this team. I was having my doubts, and he cleared them all away after today.
- To quote the Av’s announcer on the stream of the game I’m watching, (“This feels like an old school wings vs. avalanche game”) … agreed.
- I can only hope that this emotional intensity remains persistent throughout the rest of the season, because its great for Detroit, great for Colorado, and great for the NHL.
- Ryan Smyth is arguably one of the most under-rated players in the NHL.

Haha, thats it for now, watching the last 4 min, still 3-3, GO WINGS!

Thanks for the insight!

I definitely feel like Homer is the unsung hero in so many games this season.

I wonder how many of our goals he was out there screening without getting any credit (outside of the boost in his +/-).

That was a frustrating end of the third…some great opportunities for the Wings, but they can’t put the biscuit in the basket. ::sigh:: Well take a point and play four-on-four.

I feel weird.

On one hand, I should be happy the Wings got a point after going down by three goals at the end of the first period.

However, I feel we were the better team in the second and third periods as well as OT so it’s disappointing to only get one point.

Datsyuk

I hope Datsyuk gets some redemption tonight in the shootout. Hes had two breakaways the past two games without any goals to show for it.

Hit the post.... ugh

Datsyuk had him beat. nailed the post…And completely agreed with Joehass… hate the shootout.

Shootout

Ahhh…the most pointless part of a hockey game. And poor Datsuyk posted the darn thing.

Wings lose in the Shootout

First loss in the shootout for the wings…

ugh. Conklin only gave up one goal too, wings couldn’t get by Budaj

Budaj stops Datsyuk, Zetterberg, and Hudler.

Bummer.

At least we got a point in the standings?
