Lidstrom and Datsyuk will not play in 2009 All-Star Game

Captain Nicklas Lidstrom and forward star Pavel Datsyuk will no longer play in the 2009 All-Star Game to be held in Montreal this weekend. Both players withdrew due to injury.

San Jose center Patrick Marleau and Dallas Stars defenseman Stephane Robidas have been named as their replacements for the Western Conference lineup. Now I wouldn't get upset that no Wing was named as a replacement because they may very well have asked and that player may have turned down their offer like Brian Rafalski did last year.

Hopefully the weekend off will give the two players and the rest of the Wings roster a chance to take a break and just give some time for those bruises and bumps to heal.

Update: George Malik at Snapshots spoke with the Wings PR director about the two player's injuries.

I spoke to Red Wings director of public relations John Hahn today regarding Pavel Datsyuk and Nicklas Lidstrom's status as non-participants in the NHL's All-Star Game, and Mr. Hahn kindly informed me that Datsyuk's hip flexor injury and Lidstrom' elbow issues are, "Ongoing and steadily worsening injuries," so both are obviously taking time off to rest up and take care of their chronic ailments.

“Ongoing and steadily worsening injuries,” ….
That doesn’t sound good.

No it doesn't.

I think we all know most players don’t play at 100% after the first couple weeks into the season, so I’m not too worried about ongoing injuries because that’s just part of the game. But the steadily worsening bit is obviously a big concern when you are talking about two of the team’s top players.
