[Game Thread] Wings vs. Wild
After an exciting game at Wrigley Field, the Detroit Red Wings (25-7-5) must focus their attention to the Minnesota Wild (18-16-2) in their visit to the Xcel Center. While the Wings now have an eight point lead in the Central Division thanks to winning two straight games against Chicago, the Blackhawks still have two games in hand so it's important that Detroit keeps on winning and playing strong hockey.
Chris Osgood will get his first start since December 15th. He had been dealing with a sore groin, but it sounds like it has healed up. Forward Henrik Zetterberg is apparently dealing with some groin issues of his own resulting in him skipping Friday's practice, but he still plans on playing tonight. Minnesota will be without Marian Gaborik, who is expected to have hip surgery.
Brett Lebda will be a healthy scratch. Head coach Mike Babcock emphasized that Lebda was not being scratched because of his play (afterall he scored in the Winter Classic game), rather Derek Meech needed to get in and play a game and so Lebs has to rest for that to happen.
The game starts at 8:00pm and will be shown on FS Detroit. Be sure to stop by and comment on the game. If you're a Minnesota fan, check out Hockey Wilderness for their take on the game. Go Wings!

Hopefully!
But I have a feeling people may be watching the Chargers-Colts game right now or enjoying their last Saturday before heading back to work.
But it’s great to have you here!

Chelios ties Scott Stevens in wins.
Paul at Kukla’s Korner pointed out this great statistic about Chris Chelios:
When Detroit defeated Chicago yesterday at Wrigley Field it marked the 879th time that Red Wings defenseman Chris Chelios played on the winning team in a regular-season game, tying the NHL record held by Scott Stevens. Chelios’ first win came in his first game, a 3-2 victory by the Canadiens over the Hartford Whalers at the Montreal Forum on March 8, 1984.

Wrigley is cool old ballpark....
when we saw the Cubs there it was deafening when the fans cheered.
I wish the NHL would schedule more outdoor games it was fun to watch and it gave the game a different feel. The crowd sounded quite loud on TV. Having 40,000 fan watching Hockey doesn’t happen all that often. Would be nice if it happened more often!

I like games like this one...
a lot of non-stop action, fast-paced and a lot of shots on goals….

Yeah.
I wish there was a tad more scoring, but I love that there has only been one penalty tonight. That really helps the game flow.

we saw the GR Griffins the other night and they played
almost the whole 3rd period without any delays, powerplays, etc. It was a lot of fun for it was just like this game for that period….

Franzen scores to send Wings game to OT.
The Wings sure like to make it interesting, don’t they?

Shootout.
After being down 2-1, it’s nice to see the Wings get at least point out of the game.

Kolanos goes first for Minnesota.
His first career shootout attempt.
Osgood makes the save!

Datsyuk scores!
Datsyukian deke was a beauty! He actually had four dekes there.
Before his goal, Datsyuk was 50% on the shootout.

I'm Sorry...Not Trying to come off as a Bitter Minnesota Fan
But this win was a gift to your Red Wings tonight….there is no possible way that Franzen’s Goal wasn’t Played with a high stick…No way at all.

I am not sure what replay you saw where your at
but they showed a magnified shot in the center of the screen of this goal that they used to decide the call here where I live. While the stick started out above the top bar of the goal when it connected with the puck it was just below the bar. Thus, it was a legit goal.
At first I thought was his stick below his shoulders? Then, the announcers brought up the rule had been changed for the stick to below the bar. I wasn’t sure till the magnified closeup. Sorry, while close the stick was below the top bar and thus was a legit goal. It is too bad games sometimes are controversial but that is what instant replay is about.

THe shaft of the stick was even with the crossbar, but the puck was played with the blade and was at least 4" above the bar. The slow-mo replay showed the puck going into the net at a severely downward angle. It was called correctly on the ice, and overturned incorrectly in Toronto.
This was a gift 2 points for the Wings.

dream on....
pretty good rewrite buddy. I saw with my own eyes the close up. Whine on….

just to make sure you see it for real here is a link...
notice where the puck is at when he touches it…. below the bar.

That's
Not even close to a decent camera angle. Meier’s six feet away, Franzen looked at Meier wave off the goal and didn’t argue at all and the league only used Detroit’s inferior telecast for feeds. The Wild’s feed at 12 cameras and was in hi-def. The Red Wings used six and was in standard-def.
Check this out -

Good try! But it doesn't matter where the puck is BEFORE...
it gets to his stick or before it goes off his stick. I like how you try to pass off the puck coming to his stick as the shot. LOL… Nice try…..
As for Detroit’s inferior feed since I watched the “inferior feed” they had a magnified version from the other end that was at rink level. They played it a slow motion and it showed exactly when the puck came off his stick. Guess what…. it was clear as a bell and it showed exactly when the puck came off the stick and it was a goal since it was under the bar.
Now, go try to pull the wool over someone else’s eyes.

here is the total feed with several angles.....
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MpHMW8aag40
Make up your own minds (unfortunately this is on a computer screen and not a large screen so it isn’t as clear as what I saw on TV)… it doesn’t matter what is said here for neither side is going to convince the other. But, here is what is factual about this goal or “controversial” goal depending upon the side you are on:
1. The league states that it does not overturn a official’s call without clear and reasonable proof that the official made a mistake on the call. Now, Toronto has every feed that comes from this game so they have all the angles on film.
2. Toronto studied this from all the angles and saw what they considered proof that it was a goal and that the official had blown the call.
3. Detroit Fans are applauding.
4. Wild fans are feeling ripped off.
here is the final fact about this incident.
Neither side is going to convince the other unless someone can come up with film that shows so clearly that no one can dispute that when the shot was made, (that means where the puck was coming off the stick) that it was clearly above or below the bar of the goal. I personally believe that it was a goal and will until someone shows me film showing otherwise. I expect the Wild fans will continue to protest it being a goal till they see the same. If someone can come up with such a film I would love to see it.
So, I will keep looking for more film on this on the net to see what I can find.

Hi TuloRocks...
I was impressed with the Wild last night and I liked how both teams played a hard fought, clean and fast paced game. The Wild are up and coming and they are gonna be a force to be contended with.
Osgood looked good last night too….. which made me happy! :)

yea i agree
yea Ozzie looking good was i think the biggest plus of the night by a lot. Yep the Wild definitely up and coming i hope they continue to progress, if i would have to say who my 2nd favorite team has been over the last few years it’s def the Wild, i was kind of hoping they would get a point last night so it would be the best result possible for both of them lol

Datsyuk's goal
Sure was a beauty!
While I don’t agree that he’s the best player in the NHL, like our broadcasters say, he sure is top 10 and fun as hell to watch!
