[Game Thread] Wings @ Sabres
Detroit Red Wings at Buffalo Sabres, Oct 13, 2009 6:00 PM CDT
The Red Wings head into HSBC Arena tonight to take on a very talented Sabres team. Buffalo leads the league in shots on goal, fewest shots allowed, fewest goals allowed, and has a potent penalty kill. Adding some punch to the Detroit line-up is the long awaited return of the exciting Darren Helm. Helm makes his season debut following a shoulder injury and will provide some energy and physicality to the line-up.
Lines for tonight:
What to look for: Look for the Wings to fire as many shots on Ryan Miller as possible. I expect a breakout game from the Bertuzzi-Datsyuk-Zetterberg line. Look for Detroit to try and reverse Buffalo's scheme of attack and try to out-shoot the Sabres while allowing few shots against.

Sorry for the delay!
Accidentally left it to post at the game time instead of a little bit of advance time :P
Oh hi.
Is it me or does the defense look like dookie?
by Michael Petrella on Oct 13, 2009 6:20 PM CDT reply actions
like dookie
How long was that shift for Helms line? geeeeze. couldnt get a clear to save their lives.

good chemistry.
i like it

Even now
I still assume that when something goes RIGHT for Bertuzzi, it’s a total accident. I’m 100% confident I’m a better hockey player than he is.

Penalty Kill Sucks
I blame Brad McCrimmon.

PK is atrocious
The only way our PK is going to do well is to…not take penalties.
Impossible i know but apparently so is killing a penalty.
At least our powerplay is still good
"Clogging up the bases isn't that great to me." -Dusty Baker on OBP
Yup
We’re going to need the powerplay to beat Miller I think. They play such a tight defensive game its hard to get anything going through the zone.

Filppula scores a PP goal
Nice pass to Filppula down low. Assist to Kronwall and Williams.
Crisp pass, nice tap in.
First Period Stats
Detroit-Buffalo
Shots: 11-8
Hits: 10-5
Turnovers: 4-6
Takeaways: 0-2
Faceoffs: 4-12
PP: 1/1-1/1
That number for faceoffs is kind of sad.
Anyone else notice...
The shameless feud fueling that Versus is doing with the Direct TV fiasco? I think it’s pretty childish.
All I know is...
DirecTV is a quality product. Versus is not. I’d keep my mouth shut if I were Versus.
by Michael Petrella on Oct 13, 2009 7:03 PM CDT up reply actions
agreed.
Not that i have directtv but Versus is ridiculous.
by Casey Richey on Oct 13, 2009 7:05 PM CDT up reply actions
Exhibit A
My Versus feed has been frozen since the beginning of the game. The standard definition version is fine, but the HD is completely frozen. Audio only.
If I flip to another channel, and then back — it’s a DIFFERENT image, but still frozen. It’s the only channel of the 700 that is doing this. I blame Versus, as opposed to my cable provider, which is usually the culprit of suck.

man that is ridiculous
no excuse for that.

Brad May
There’s that famous game-breaking skillset everyone was talking about…

Whoops
Wasn’t supposed to be a response. My bad.

I'm sorry... I'm just going to say it.
Chris Osgood sucks donkey nards.
by Michael Petrella on Oct 13, 2009 7:13 PM CDT reply actions
He literally had to put effort into allowing that goal. If he would have done nothing, that weak ass shot would have hit him somewhere.
by Michael Petrella on Oct 13, 2009 7:13 PM CDT up reply actions
That goal was pretty pathetic
Not calling it a cheap goal for the Buffalo guy but Oz has to control that rebound better.
It's okay guys...
Offensive extraordinairre Brad May is on the ice. All the fanboys will tell you he’s the difference maker.

Babcock changing the defensive pairings?
Saw Ericsson on the ice with Lids, Meech with Stuart now. Kronner and Rafalski the other pair?
If not...
At least Kirk Maltby and Kris Draper will play reliable defense and stop the bleeding. Oh wait…they’re in the press box so Brad May can play six minutes and commit various turnovers.
by Michael Petrella on Oct 13, 2009 7:24 PM CDT up reply actions
It's official.
I don’t like this team. Chris Osgood sucks, Jonathan Ericsson is vehemently overrated, Jason Williams is Jason Williams, I despise Todd Bertuzzi, Ville Leino is no Calder candidate, Brad May is an unnecessary spare.

All i can hope for is a Blackhawks style come back
can’t believe i just hoped for something the Blackhawks did…
Part of me...
…kind of hopes they get their ass kicked right out of the building to light a fire.

bad defense, good forechecking for Sabres...
Bad play from Osgood.
by Casey Richey on Oct 13, 2009 7:38 PM CDT up reply actions
Inspiring
Anyone notice Jimmy Howard shooting his leg out one way and then looking behind him the OTHER way when the shot went by him?
It looks like NHL 94 in net for the Wings tonight. Let’s hope the Sabres don’t try the “go to the corner then top of the crease” sure-fire goal move.
by Michael Petrella on Oct 13, 2009 7:40 PM CDT reply actions
haha let's hope not...
but if we’re talking about the same play, I think he was looking for if the rebound kicked out to the other side. Anyone have Dom’s number on speed dial though?

HAVE YOU SEEN MY BASEBALL
Jimmy Howard waves at another shot.
by Michael Petrella on Oct 13, 2009 8:02 PM CDT reply actions
He's been on the ice for...
i think 4 of the 6 goals. 3 at the least. He looks lost.

Not just Nik
The whole team is having a rough game. From my seat, it looks like only Flip cares what happens.

They just showed
Yzerman, about the only high point of the night.

Patrick Kaleta
Has 22% of his point total from all of last season TONIGHT.

Clearly an accident.
Detroit has scored, bringing the gap to a respectable 4.

i thought you were calling Cleary an accident
and was like “that’s pretty harsh…”
by Casey Richey on Oct 13, 2009 8:14 PM CDT up reply actions
No no...
I love Dan Cleary. He was not in my HATE PURGE from earlier in the thread. HA!
by Michael Petrella on Oct 13, 2009 8:16 PM CDT up reply actions
who doesn’t love Cleary? Other than Hawks fans
by Casey Richey on Oct 13, 2009 8:18 PM CDT up reply actions
Organizers of Team Canada's World Junior Team
If I remember correctly, he’s the only player to be cut from that squad four times.

Or, in keeping with my Simpsons references...
“You were yelling at the swing.”
“I WAS!? Oh no, I love the swing!”
by Michael Petrella on Oct 13, 2009 8:18 PM CDT up reply actions
Well...that was a particularly bad game
Gotta get things together soon with the way the rest of this division is playing.
