[Game Thread] Wings vs. St. Louis (Sweden)
St. Louis Blues at Detroit Red Wings, Oct 2, 2009 2:00 PM CDT
The Detroit Red Wings open their 2009-10 regular season in Sweden this afternoon as part of the 2009 Compuware Premiere series against St. Louis. The puck is slated to drop at 3 p.m. EDT (9 p.m. in Sweden) and will be televised by Versus.
Goaltender Jimmy Howard had to fill in for Chris Osgood on Wednesday in their last preseason game due to Ozzie feeling under the weather. Assuming he is feeling better, Osgood will start in goal later today.
The one question with regards to today's lineup is whether Kirk Maltby or Patrick Eaves will earn a spot on the fourth line. Head coach Mike Babcock said that decision wouldn't come until Friday.
Feel free to leave your comments on the game or the upcoming season in the comment section below. We'd love to hear from you!

Televised by Versus, eh
great, a huge temptation to duck out of work early on a Friday afternoon….just what I needed…I think I’ll be good, and just stick to Ken Kal on-line….I think…

Is the online feed going to kick in right at game time?
The blackhawks post game cut out after a couple of minutes…the dead air is driving me nuts….
What a weekend for Michigan sports, eh? Tigers in a final drive for the division, Red Wings starting up, Michigan-MSU football, and the Lions going into a game not on a huge losing streak.

National Anthem finished, Osgood vs. Mason. Tkachuk face-off against Zetterberg.

Poor Chris Mason
Unless he has a spectacular cmapaign, he’s destined to be an afterthought, just the other goalie named Mason in the central division.

controlling the puck and everyone passing pretty well so far.

kind of annoying
The feed via the wings website (NHL Game Radio) has a very low volume level….a lot lower than the blackhawks feed I was listening to a few minutes ago.

And it’s on a score. Is the ice as tilted as that impression makes it seem? Well, before the goal, anyway?

Big E ties the game at 1
Kris Draper streaked down the right side and forced a shot on net and Jonathan Ericsson followed up the rebound with a shot that beat the sprawled Mason.
Goal at 10:43, assists to Draper and Kirk Maltby.

Great thing about that goal...
Was that Draper squeezed in front of Bill McCreary and the defenseman was forced behind McCreary. Gave him some more room to get the shot off. Mason slightly interfered with but the goal was scored so fast after it that it was a good no call.

Surprised by the score - yes
Surprised that Lebda’s on the ice for 3 of 4 goals – not at all
by Long Armed Panda on Oct 2, 2009 3:48 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Same problems as last year
Osgood letting not necessarily weak but not great goals either, entire team thinks they can finesse it out of the zone every time, Lebda doesn’t seem to know what position he is, Detroit stopped sustaining pressure after the halfway point of the 2nd, etc.
Side note, I’m convinced Paul Kariya leads active players in goals on Osgood. I don’t know how many times I’ve seen him go blocker side on Osgood, but Osgood still leaned glove on the breakaway. Ugh. We need a confidence boost for Osgood or else he’s gonna slump for half the season again.
by KyleKujawa on Oct 2, 2009 3:48 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Agreed
Lebda was up in the attack on two of the three goals scored, forcing Bertuzzi/Zetterberg to play his position. He’s not just up in the attack, he’s leading the attack…
by Casey Richey on Oct 2, 2009 3:50 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Ozzie doesn't have the luxury
of slumping for half of the season this year. We had Conklin to help through the winter months last season. Does anyone trust Howard that much?
by Long Armed Panda on Oct 2, 2009 3:51 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
After yesterday's performance...
I have to upgrade my opnion of him from one of distrust to one of…“meh”…
At least Conklin was proven. I guess we wait and see with Howard. Wait until he fails miserably and is let go for Larsson to replace.
However if it’s Ozzie who has a meltdown…again..ugh…
by 42jeff on Oct 2, 2009 3:54 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I'm warming up to the idea of Howard
for the occasional game or if Ozzie’s having an off night. I am not comfortable with the idea of putting Howard in for a bunch of straight games so Ozzie can clear his head mid-February.
by Long Armed Panda on Oct 2, 2009 3:57 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
It's MY opinion..
…that for Howard to really be trusted, the wings have to use him early and often. Maybe go every third or fourth game …to maybe give Ozzie a break and ease Howard up to the big boy table. You know…like they did with Ozzie when he was just coming up.
