[Game Thread] Wings @ Oilers
Detroit Red Wings at Edmonton Oilers, Oct 29, 2009 8:30 PM CDT
Detroit comes off a much needed win over the Canucks, scoring five times on one of the league's elite goalies Roberto Luongo. They'll need some more of that type of offensive production again tonight against the Oilers. Nikolai Khabibulin will likely start for the Oilers and Jimmy Howard will start in net for Detroit, coming off his first win of the season in relief effort of Chris Osgood. The top line of Dustin Penner, Sam Gagner, and Ales Hemsky has been good for the Oilers and could make things hard on Detroit if the wrong lines are out there against them.
For my statistical preview of the Oilers from yesterday, click here or simply scroll down.
What to look for: Look for Tomas Holmstrom and Pavel Datsyuk to try and continue on their recent success tonight. Valtteri Filppula is another guy to watch that could get some good offensive chances--passing and shooting--against this Oilers team that allows a good chunk of shots.
Puck drops at 9:30 PM ET and will air on FS-D and TSN. As always, GO WINGS!
Oilers SB Nation member: The Copper & Blue. Derek Zona of The Copper & Blue had this interesting bit on the Oilers:
The Oiler flu has struck. At least 13 players have now been affected by some version of the flu, including H1N1 carrier Ladislav Smid.
Some have played through it - Dustin Penner, Smid, Tom Gilbert - others have either left games or been a scratch - Ales Hemsky, Gilbert Brule, Mike Comrie, Lubomir Visnovsky. Combined with concussions for Sheldon Souray and Steve Staios and a lingering back problem for Fernando Pisani, the Oilers are suffering at this point. Their red-hot start has ground to a halt with the onset of the flu. If Visnovsky is unable to go tonight, the Oilers will have Jason Strudwick, Taylor Chorney, and Theo Peckham in the lineup. It could get ugly.
Complete game coverage here: Red Wings vs Oilers coverage
Edmonton Oilers: 6-5-1 13 pts
Key wins: 6-4 over Columbus, 2-1 over Vancouver
New note on the table, the NHL Rank will now feature a indicator if the ranking given for that team is above or below Detroit's ranking. A=Above, B=Below the ranking that Detroit is currently at.

Drinking Game
I propose everyone takes a drink every time “Swine flu” or “H1N1” is mentioned.
Have someone wake you up at the end of the third and take you to the hospital.

Keating...
Man, he was careful to say “flu” and not “swine flu.” But, that woulda been it…

Advantage Howard. Somehow. What garbage our goaltending situation is.

Aw
The kids are annoyed.
Look at this doofus in the box for no damn reason.

They like the after-whistle stuff, eh?

Agree
No argument here. No organization. Todd Bertuzzi looked particularly bad on that almost-but-not-quite-carry in.

Darren Helm...
That kid is a goddamn spark plug. I have no idea how he’s always the first one to the puck ALWAYS.

But hey...
At least we’ve gone more than 7 minutes without being down a two-hole.

He wasn’t given the hook like Ozzie. Worth noting, I suppose…
by Michael Petrella on Oct 29, 2009 8:59 PM CDT up reply actions
Ozzie's goals
were particularly egregious. As soft as it gets. At least by being way out of position Howard looks less culpable.
100% Agreed
Absolutely. Just felt like it was worth noting. HA

I am relieved...
every time Howard makes a save. Although honestly, it is good for him to get some work early.
BOTH GOALS
He’s been out for a swim nowhere near the shooter.

Maybe the new drinking game
should be every time Edmonton scores. The pace has been set high right now.
Hey, ya know who should be on the penalty kill?
The guy with the worst +/- on the team. That should work out, right?

Look, it shouldn't be 3-0 already...
But that was a beautiful shot.

Vehemently out of position.

Things are going well I see.
It's never about the eventual destination, but rather the long journey and its challenging obstacles that are presented and what it takes to overcome them, that makes the taste of success all the more worthwhile!!!
Wonder what the refs had to look at?
It was off an Oiler. Odd.

The game is on TSN and it’s in Canada. Need I explain more? The Hawks know all too well the types of shenanighans that go on when TSN broadcasts game. The officiating tends to be tilted towards one side.
It's never about the eventual destination, but rather the long journey and its challenging obstacles that are presented and what it takes to overcome them, that makes the taste of success all the more worthwhile!!!
Tradeable Players (just sayin'...)
1. Jimmy Howard – although I imagine he’s as useless to every other team in the NHL as he is to the Red Wings.
2. Niklas Kronwall
3. Brett Lebda
4. Derek Meech
5. Valtteri Filppula – let’s hope it doesn’t come to that
6. Ville Leino – ditto
7. Darren Helm – oh please, dear God, no
8. Justin Abdelkader – hopefully a Wing for a long time
-——————————————————————————————————
UNTRADEABLE PLAYERS
Chris Osgood – loyalty clause
Nick Lidstrom – let’s get serious here.
Brian Rafalski – no-trade clause
Brad Stuart – no-trade clause
Andreas Lilja – injured, career in danger
Jonathan Ericsson – Mike Babcock love affair
Pavel Datsyuk – huge contract with lots of years
Henrik Zetterberg – ditto
Johan Franzen – dittox2
Tomas Holmstrom – contract year
Dan Cleary – no-trade clause
Todd Bertuzzi – contract year
Jason Williams – contract year
Kris Draper – no-trade clause
Kirk Maltby – contract year
-——————————————————————————————————
PROSPECTS WORTH A DAMN
1. Thomas McCollum – very possibly the goalie of the future
2. Daniel Larsson – also not a bad option for the future
3. Jakub Kindl – ranked very highly by everyone
4. Tomas Tatar – very exciting, let’s hope he sticks around
5. Rights to Brendan Smith – potential top defenseman
6. Rights to Landon Ferraro – I can’t wait to see him in red and white, either

I’ll take Kronwall if you take Campbell.

Check Huet’s stats over the past week. You might think otherwise.

Yeah, a week is all it takes...
Talk to me in April. Assuming our goalies haven’t imploded our chances AT April. HA!
by Michael Petrella on Oct 29, 2009 10:15 PM CDT up reply actions
On Huet.
Look at his career numbers he’ll be fine. Huet is not top notch by any means but he is a good goaltender that can steal you a game. Talk to you in April? You’ll be fine, trust me it’s early.
It's never about the eventual destination, but rather the long journey and its challenging obstacles that are presented and what it takes to overcome them, that makes the taste of success all the more worthwhile!!!
Totally
I haven’t understood the Huet Hate this year (let’s be honest with each other, “Huet Hate” should stick…). He was a great goalie in Washington for that small time….
Do you think the Hawks are going to unload him in light of Niemi’s strong play?
by Michael Petrella on Oct 29, 2009 10:25 PM CDT up reply actions
Hard to say. But based on his play of recent there isn’t a chance that they will unload him for without Seabrook and Toews he has been very good. Has spent a lot time with goaltender coach Stephane Waite changing his mechanics which has paid huge dividends early.
If he goes back to struggling they may look elsewhere but Niemi won’t ever be the #1 this year at least.
It's never about the eventual destination, but rather the long journey and its challenging obstacles that are presented and what it takes to overcome them, that makes the taste of success all the more worthwhile!!!
Oh Leino
What a pass by Datsyuk. Leino took a fraction of a second too long.

I can't believe the Wings have a chance to win this still...
After the horrible play by Jimmy Howard…
It’s not that he’s out of position, he just needs to learn how to control rebounds, he’s made some great saves, but given up easy goals with his juicy rebounds.
Sure, why not?
Things are going swimmingly.

This is incredible. I was watching the World Series, but watching this during commercials. I’m not surprised we’ve made a game of it, the Wings have seemed to be swarming all game.
