Red Wings sign Brad May to 1-yr deal
As a follow up from Drew's last quickhits entry, it's looking more and more likely May will make an appearance in Motown at some point this season. From TSN:
The Detroit Red Wings have added some more veteran experience to their team as they have signed forward Brad May to a one-year deal worth $500,000.
The 37-year old May split time between the Anaheim Ducks and Toronto Maple Leafs last season had one goal, six assists and 89 penalty minutes in 58 games.
In 1,001 career NHL games split between the Sabres, Canucks, Coyotes, Avalanche, Ducks and Maple Leafs, the Toronto native has 127 goals, 160 assists and 2,182 penalty minutes. He helped the Ducks capture the Stanley Cup in 2007.

Bertuzzi and now May
Does anybody else get the impression that Mr. Illitch has had it with his stars getting abused every game?

indeed
The Ducks made it a point to show that they could push around our players because who would stop them really? Lilja was our best fighter and got destroyed by Weber. Stuart can fight and will if necessary but hardly drops the gloves.
Although Bertuzzi brings some baggage, he sure can hit and fight to protect his teammates and the same goes for May

Return of the Grindline?
Could we see a Bertuzzi/Helm/May lineup when Helm returns? Granted, they are all Left Wingers but if they are out there just to throw down some hits, does it really matter if they all are Left Wingers? Helm can play any of the forward spots anyways.

Helm's a center I think
but yeah this would be a deadly line. Imagine if they were paired with Kronwall and Stuart too haha

That's exactly what I was thinking when I read Apocalypicon3's post
Wouldn’t that send a message though? I mean start a GAME witht that line?
Bring on Pronger. Damn punk.

Good point. Pronger has given this team issues almost the entirety of our “dynasty” (if you can call it that). Let’s see him get even a single hit against a lineup of Bertuzzi/Helm/May/Kronwall/Stuart. Softer teams (The Pens and Caps, for example) wouldn’t be able to handle 10 minutes a night with that. Not with Helm being able to skate circles around pretty much any player and being able to score quite easily.

Brooks Orpik, Matt Cooke, and Jay McKee would have something to say about being called soft haha. But yeah, not many lineups could handle that punishment.

True. They still weren’t that tough of a team, though. And they didn’t protect Crosby very well (lucky for them, Malkin can protect himself for the most part). Remember Datsyuk’s first shift back from his injury? He dished out two or three leveling hits on the Pens immediately. Or the hit in Game 7 that took out Crosby. They may have some hard hitters but no one that can protect their captain.
We really had the same problem last year. The people dishing out the hits were doing it randomly and not doing it in order to protect our players (except maybe Stuart). Bertuzzi and May are known enforcers and are, really, a dying breed. They will be in the games to make sure that no one touches our players.

Good point
Malkin can protect himself, by swinging his stick at Zetterberg like a mad man haha.
I’m kind of hoping for a fight tonight. its something the team needs in my opinion.

Haha. I forgot about that. But Malkin knows how to avoid hits and how to fight (the Zetterberg thing is a bad example. haha) and can lay out some hits too if it’s needed.

He plays Center, yes. But most sites have him listed as a LW. I think the Wings play him at Center for whatever reason (hey, it works) but he is naturally a LW. Like Duncan in the NBA. Gets played as a C but is naturally a PF. It works though.
