Former Wing and Future Hall of Famer Shanahan Retires
Looks like the Wings will have their seventh hall of fame member from the 2002 championship in 2012/2013 (unsure of which season he will be eligible due to him retiring during the season): Brendan Shanahan officially announced his retirement today. He will join Scotty Bowman, Steve Yzerman, Igor Larionov, Brett Hull, Luc Robataile, and, in all likelihood, Dominik Hasek as members of both the Hockey Hall of Fame and the 2002 Stanley Cup Champions Detroit Red Wings.
Over the course of his 21-year career, he scored 656 goals (good for 11th all time) and tallied 698 assists for 1,354 points total. He played for the New Jersey Devils, St. Louis Blues, Hartford Whalers, Detroit Red Wings, and New York Rangers before finishing his career with the team that drafted him, the Devils. He was traded to the Wings at the beginning of the 1997 season for Paul Coffey and Keith Premieau, where he helped us win the first of back-to-back cups.
I would like to thank Shanny for bringing us three Cups and years of great play for us. I wish you the best in your post-playing life.

Shanny
Congratulations to Brendan Shanahan- he was the man that put the Red Wings over the hump and got them Stanley Cups in 97, 98 and 02- Hall of Fame bound for sure!!!
first jersey
was a white Shanahan jersey with the “A” on the shoulder. Barely fits anymore but still wearable!
Shanny
was one of the greatest Red Wings players I have seen ever since I got into hockey at the age of 7. I miss the Irish song played at the Joe whenever he scores…that was the best. Thanks for the three Cups. He deserves to get his number retired at the Joe. 14!!!!

I think
shanny was more of an idol to me than yzerman at the time (not being mean to stevie) and he helped us get our three cups. He was a respectable man with a different way of explaining things….. I will miss him
Im like Steve Yzerman! No, not the leadership, goals, two way play or sportmanship..... Just the knee pain!
Shanny was the man
Shanahan was the definition of Power Forward, and he demanded respect on and off the ice with the way he carried himself and the way he defended his teammates. When we needed a big goal,Shanny got it. When he thought Yzerman or Larionov or Fedorov got pushed around unfairly hed go out and call the guy out to drop the gloves. Shanahan was definitely what the Wings needed to help push them over the hump and seeing him take out Roy long enough till Vernon could get to him then move on to Adam Foote as McCarty pummeled the turtle lemieux…brings a smile to my fave everytime. Shanny we’d love to have ya in the Red Wings organization front office anyday.
