[Game Thread] Flames @ Wings

Calgary Flames at Detroit Red Wings, Nov 27, 2009 6:00 PM CST

Larry MacDougal - AP

Calgary comes to Joe Louis Arena with a 6-2-2 record in the last 10 games while Detroit limps in with a 5-4-1 during that same stretch. Last time Detroit and Calgary faced off, Detroit came away with a 3-1 victory in Calgary, with goals from Holmstrom, Stuart, and Maltby.

Calgary is lead offensively by Jarome Iginla (16 G, 7 A) and Rene Bourque (7 G, 14 A) and tightened up defensively this past off-season by adding Jay Bouwmeester. Bourque is likely to sit out following an injury and Miika Kiprusoff is scheduled to start in net for the Flames. Kipper is 13-5 with a 2.49 GAA, stopping close to 92% of the shots faced. Chris Osgood is scheduled to start in net for the Wings who will need a sound defensive game following the injury to Niklas Kronwall. Patrick Eaves is in, Brad May out; rest of the lines after the jump.

What to look for: Detroit needs to take as many shots as possible. This Calgary team has one of the better netminders in the league and to get shut out by Andrej Pavelec on 40 shots, they'll need even more firepower against Kipper. Detroit will need offense out of Henrik Zetterberg, Pavel Datsyuk, and Tomas Holmstrom against a tough Calgary defense.

The puck will drop at 7:00 p.m. ET and the game will air on FS-D and SNET-W. As always, GO WINGS!

Good PK

Few quality chances with a good contribution from Zetterberg

by Casey Richey on Nov 27, 2009 6:24 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

I hope the speed line gets some points tonight

by Fiend on Nov 27, 2009 6:26 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Absolutely

I love them even if they don’t, but they’re due. And I assume Patrick Eaves wants to stay in the lineup.

by Michael Petrella on Nov 27, 2009 6:27 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Yea i agree...

and i think eaves was the wrong man to scratch, i really like him and helm lately

by Fiend on Nov 27, 2009 6:32 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Agreed

I don’t want to sound like I’m questioning Babcock, but his scratches have been odd all season. Like Helm and Abdelkader have been healthy scratches at least once, Kirk Maltby a handful of times and he was – at the time – leading the team in goals scored. Yet, Todd Bertuzzi’s played in every game.

Brett Hull

That’s an allowable goal, thanks to 1999.

by Michael Petrella on Nov 27, 2009 6:35 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

yep

looks like holmstroms gonna need to find a new favorite spot tonight

by Fiend on Nov 27, 2009 6:38 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

I don't understand

why Mike Babcock doesn’t go coo-coo-bananas when these obvious blown goal calls. Yeah, it looks ridiculous and desperate, but it would certainly shed light on some of these equally ridiculous and desperate attempts to derail the Red Wings. The tin foil hat society would grow.

by Michael Petrella on Nov 27, 2009 6:39 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Nice pass, Ozzie

That one falls under my twenty grand rule.

by Michael Petrella on Nov 27, 2009 6:40 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

The $20G Rule

It originated when Dominik Hasek would go for a swim attempting to play the puck. He loved to get involved, but he was AWFUL at it. I used to wish that Ken Holland would fine him $20,000 every time he left the net to play the puck. It’s not enough to deter him from doing it ALTOGETHER, but he’d certainly have to think when the right time was.

As time went on, the rule expanded to include Chris Osgood, who – despite his goal against Hartford in 1872 – is also a terrible puck-handler.

This season, Todd Bertuzzi’s spin-o-rama passes to nowhere is the newest fine-able offense.

I don’t care where the cash goes, as long as it is actually removed from the player. You’re welcome to it. Or you can split it with me if you’re feeling generous.

i think it should double

so $40 grand for that and then $80 grand for the next

by Casey Richey on Nov 27, 2009 7:10 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Excellent addition

It’s under advisement. So far we’re up to $80 ,then.

Osgood 1- 20
Osgood 2- 40
Bertuzzi 1- 20

they should have conditional contracts

but not like if you get so many points you get a bonus, but if you dont meet a minimum you have to pay something

by Casey Richey on Nov 27, 2009 7:12 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

HA

Bertuzzi. Base salary $1.5M
30-goal bonus $250,000
Sub-10 goal fine $150,000

Suddenly, it’s slightly more bearable.

by Michael Petrella on Nov 27, 2009 7:13 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

yup!

it would be like a career average basis and then a certain amount of points subtracted in the event of a slump year.

Incorrect information regarding Dave Moss

He spent all four years at Catholic Central. He only played hockey for three of them (making that hockey team is ridiculously hard and freshmen RARELY are given a second look). He was one of three sophomores when we were sophomores. I was not one of the others. HA

My school was like prison in that respect. The guy behind you was immediately after you in alphabetical order. Apparently the distance between MOS and PET was however many seats there were in a column. HA

Uh oh.

Ville Leino wants NOTHING to do with shooting. He was desperate to get rid of that puck a second ago.

by Michael Petrella on Nov 27, 2009 7:36 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

whatthe hell happened to him?

last year he was dynamite in the few regular season games he had, this year squat!

Yeah. I don't know.

4 goals and 5 assists in 13 games as a call-up.
3 goals and 2 assists in 22 games this season.

Bertuzzi

I’ve been captain of that hate brigade since the first go-around in Detroit. If you remember correctly, he sucked donkey nards then, too.

Yea true

Ive never cared for him, and its really getting annoying now

and how does leino go from grand rapids one year to our top lines and power playthe next?? ridiculous

by Fiend on Nov 27, 2009 8:04 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Bring Tatar up

he’d do just as good or better than Leino is doing right now

by Casey Richey on Nov 27, 2009 8:04 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

He was promised...

He wouldn’t re-sign unless he was promised Detroit all season. He was unhappy being sent down last year.

by Michael Petrella on Nov 27, 2009 8:04 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

And to be honest.....

He’s the kind of player that SHOULD be scoring goals, especially on the PP.

by Michael Petrella on Nov 27, 2009 8:05 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Well fellas, this blows.

Osgood well off his angle/beautiful shot by Jokinen/our team playing like an ECHL team

HOLY SHIT - SURPRISE SURPRISE!

Todd Bertuzzi with an unnecessary offensive zone penalty??! No!

They were talking 2-year extension on Wednesday...

It sounded like Ken Daniels knew more than he could spill.

by Michael Petrella on Nov 27, 2009 8:14 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

woopsies.

I mean i hope he’s back, i’m just saying that suck if this was it for him.

by Casey Richey on Nov 27, 2009 8:16 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Yup.

He deserves better than this. But, he’s gotta pull an Yzerman and – as captain – motivate the guys to want to whoop some ass. If not with him, then FOR him.

by Michael Petrella on Nov 27, 2009 8:18 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

So...

we kind of suck. I hate to use injuries as an excuse but when its that many and to that many big parts of the team, i think its a valid one.

by Casey Richey on Nov 27, 2009 8:23 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

come on not another shutout please!

by Fiend on Nov 27, 2009 8:24 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Well...off to write the recap

with the way Kipper’s playing. This is ovah. Enjoyed talking with you’se guys. If something happens i’ll come back of course

by Casey Richey on Nov 27, 2009 8:26 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Something needs to change with this team. Things are just way to stale. There power play tries the same things every time. Point shots. What does the other team do to react… Block shots. The Wings are just too predictable right now. I like Babcock as a coach, but right now they need a change. They need a different system. Surprisingly, Outshooting teams 40-20 just isn’t working.

by dewman8810 on Nov 27, 2009 8:27 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Totally agree

shots from the blue line is all we got.
talk to ya next time take care guys

by Fiend on Nov 27, 2009 8:31 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

They just don’t have the finishers to play the way they have in the past. I wasn’t able to watch this game, but the storyline seems to be the same. A lot of outside shots for Detroit and 3 or 4 glorious chances for the other team which gives them enough to win. Losing three games in a row by a total score of 8-1, but outshooting the opponents 111-67, and getting hundreds of shots blocked too. Something is wrong here. The shots are just not of good quality.

by dewman8810 on Nov 27, 2009 8:33 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Goalie

Why do the wings not start Jimmy Howard,he played quite nicely
while ozzie was on sick leave?I think they need to sit him again he’s giving up
way to many soft(easy goals)

by JHiller09 on Nov 27, 2009 8:39 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

wondering the same thing BUT

it doesn’t matter all that much when you get 0 in your own goal column.
