Game Thread: Red Wings vs Coyotes

Phoenix Coyotes at Detroit Red Wings, Dec 14, 2009 6:30 PM CST

The Phoenix Coyotes come calling to Joe Louis Arena tonight to take on the Red Wings. It's the second meeting of the year for the two teams: Phoenix won the first 3-2 in overtime on Adrian Aucoln's goal.

The talk of the town (until today's Darren Helm injury) was Todd Bertuzzi's back-to-back two-goal games, each featuring an overtime game winner. For Phoenix, Ilya Bryzgalov has a sparkling 1.95 GAA this season.

The puck drops at 7:30 pm ET. For the Coyotes' perspective, visit Five For Howling. We'll see you here to talk about the game.

by joehass on Dec 14, 2009 7:20 PM CST reply actions

So let me get this straight

…they don’t stop play if a player is injured and the other team has the puck. But if one team has possession and could potentially score on the play and one of their players goes down, play stops? How does that make sense?

When a player goes down, the play should be stopped regardless of who has the puck. A player’s safety should always be more important than a single play and it especially should not lead to an odd-man situation.

by bleep bloop on Dec 14, 2009 7:21 PM CST reply actions

The fundamental rule is that a scoring chance should not be interrupted because of an injury. With no blood on the ice, I understand why the officials would let play continue.

by joehass on Dec 14, 2009 7:23 PM CST up reply actions

And here is why that is completely wrong. In such a case, if play is allowed to continue, potentially indefinitely, the player might die. Unfortunately, it might take just that for a change.
