Red Wings vs. Oilers Game Thread

Edmonton Oilers at Detroit Red Wings, Dec 3, 2009 6:00 PM CST

The Red Wings come off their impressive 4-1 victory over the Dallas Stars with a Western Conference matchup against the Edmonton Oilers tonight at Joe Louis Arena.

The Oilers beat the Red Wings in their first meeting this season in a shootout, 6-5. In that game, Edmonton had a 5-1 lead in the second period, only to have Detroit respond with four unanswered goals to tie the game and send it to the shooutout. That was also the game Valtteri Filppula broke his wrist, landing him on the injured list (where he remains).

The Oilers come in off a 7-3 beatdown at the hands of the Vancouver Canucks. Worth watching for Edmonton: Dustin Penner has four points the last two games, and leads the Oilers in goals (15) and points (30).

For the Red Wings, Todd Bertuzzi is beginning to show signs of life, with three points the last two games.

Puck drops at 7:00, with the game airing on FS Detroit and City TV Alberta. Look forward to seeing you then!

So I take it you’re a Kindl fan?

by joehass on Dec 3, 2009 6:05 PM CST up reply actions

Mostly trying to get some excitement going

I AM a fan, the handful of games I’ve seen of him in a Griffins uniform, he was impressive, if not “quiet,” which I suppose is great for a defenseman.

I’m mostly excited because he has to be a Red Wing next season, and – unlike Ericsson who got into 27 games over two seasons – he has yet to suit up. I figure it’s a good time to see what he’s got, as he begins his one-way next season.

Start of Period 1

Howard starts his third straight…let’s see how he does.

Lots of back and forth...

…Oilers have had a couple good chances.

by joehass on Dec 3, 2009 6:14 PM CST reply actions

EDM GOAL: Visnovski (6) (unassisted) 5:50

The shot goes off Lebda’s stick midair and Howard can’t get a handle on it. It dribbles through and the Oilers take the lead.

by joehass on Dec 3, 2009 6:27 PM CST reply actions

They credited the Wings with one more shot, but I still don’t like 2-2.

Brule had a chance right in the front of the goal...

…couldn’t put it in. Wings are being awfully sloppy on defense against a lousy team coming in.

by joehass on Dec 3, 2009 6:32 PM CST reply actions

EDM GOAL: Nilsson (2) (Stone, Stortini) 17:09

Stone sets up Nilsson, who goes through Ericsson when Ericsson was frozen, then beat Jimmy Howard without much effort at all. 2-0 Oilers, and they have earned both those goals.

by joehass on Dec 3, 2009 6:37 PM CST reply actions

DET GOAL: Cleary (6) (Bertuzzi, Lidstrom) 19:59

That’s gonna hurt! Lidstrom passes 140 feet up the ice to Todd Bertuzzi, who passed it back quickly to Cleary, who put a 35-footer past Deslauriers. A gorgeous pass for a great goal, and Pat Quinn’s gotta be peeved as he goes into the locker room!

by joehass on Dec 3, 2009 6:42 PM CST reply actions

Wow, Ericsson looks terrible

This team is fucking embarrassing right now. We need some serious help, especially on D. I miss Franzen, Flip, Kronner, Willy and Rafi. :( Nice goal by Cleary at the end of the period though.

by adamgreuel on Dec 3, 2009 6:42 PM CST reply actions

End Of Period 1

After a lousy first 19:30, they come alive with a stunner that puts the Oilers on their heels. But that goal won’t erase a horrible defensive effort. They have to come out stronger in the second.

Start of Period 2

And we start with a poutine reference. This does not bode well.

by joehass on Dec 3, 2009 6:58 PM CST reply actions

Two big chances against Jimmy Howard

He’s been good enough, but some sloppy chances.

by joehass on Dec 3, 2009 7:03 PM CST reply actions

May and Strontini want to go, but the linesmen step in.

Smid and Maltby also want to go. All off a blind-side, mid-ice hint of Abdelkader by Stone, then Maltby and Visnovsky want to go.

by joehass on Dec 3, 2009 7:04 PM CST reply actions

I'm thinking they should have let May/Stortini happen

Because now it’ll be drawn out and it’ll be more of a circus, which is what they claim they’re trying to cut down on.

It’s going to happen one way or another – let these guys do their jobs and get it over with.

by Michael Petrella on Dec 3, 2009 7:06 PM CST up reply actions

Those linesmen were right there…I agree…they jumped too soon.

Four for roughing?

Is it because the gloves hit the ice? Seemed harmless from both.

by Michael Petrella on Dec 3, 2009 7:10 PM CST up reply actions

I agree. Don’t quite get that.

by joehass on Dec 3, 2009 7:12 PM CST up reply actions

EDM GOAL: O'Sullivan (5) (Jacques) 8:50

O’Sullivan’s pass goes off Pavel Datsuyk, and Howard , for the second time tonight, cannot handle the deflected puck that goes right through his five hole. It’s 3-1, and that’s a depressing goal to watch.

by joehass on Dec 3, 2009 7:17 PM CST reply actions

WTF WAS THAT GOAL?

God damn Howard. We are getting outshot 24-13 against the last place and most injury depleted team in the conference. Holy hell do we ever suck!

by adamgreuel on Dec 3, 2009 7:18 PM CST reply actions

And they score again

Someone wanna murder Jimmy Howard for me?

by adamgreuel on Dec 3, 2009 7:19 PM CST reply actions

You know, this is a growing pain game for Howard. He’s gotta learn to stop those.

by joehass on Dec 3, 2009 7:24 PM CST up reply actions

EDM GOAL: O'Sullivan 2 (6) (Souray) 11:47

A Wings turnover put the puck on Souray sitck, who passes oit to O’Sullivan. He deked out Howard, and got it past a diving Stuart who was desperate to stop it. Howard looks horrible tonight.

by joehass on Dec 3, 2009 7:51 PM CST reply actions

Two great chances by Bertuzzi...

…and he’s stoned! This is getting painful.

by joehass on Dec 3, 2009 7:52 PM CST reply actions

Cleary with a chance, but can't get a chance off...
