Red Wings vs. Devils Game Thread
Detroit Red Wings at New Jersey Devils, Dec 5, 2009 6:00 PM CST
The Detroit Red Wings head to the New York City area for a pair of games this weekend. Tonight, they face the New Jersey Devils in their first trip to the Prudential Center in Newark.
Detroit is coming off a 4-1 loss to the Edmonton Oilers in a game that was every bit as ugly as the score would indicate. Dan Cleary scored only goal for the Wings. Jakub Kindl made his NHL debut with one shot in 14:18 of ice time.
For New Jersey, they defeated the Tampa Bay Lightning last night 3-2 at home on a goal by Jamie Langenburger with 38.1 seconds left in regulation. It was their seventh win in eight games at home. With the back-to-back games, it will be interesting to see if Jacques Lemaire will go back to Martin Brodeur tonight against the Detroit.
For an alternate view, check out our sister blog In Lou We Trust. Puck drops at 7:00 p.m. ET. The game is on FS Detroit and MSG Plus. Comment away below!

This will be an interesting game
Hopefully we don’t lie down and let the Devils walk all over us. We gotta get some shots on Brodeur and stuff out of our end because they have a potent offense but even better defensive game and oh you know—-the greatest goalie in the modern era.
In honor of Z and Pavel reunited..
This masterpiece still makes me go “wow”

How in hell did Osgood stop that?
Good thing it wasn’t perfectly on target or it would have been 1-0 NJ
agreed
NJ is too tough defensively that they can put constant pressure on Oz, gotta hope for PP or something to score on them.
I was seven at the time, too, but I’m a Devils fan so the memory is probably much more pleasant to me, I suppose. Watching that series is what made me into the die hard Devils fan that I’ve been for the past fourteen/fifteen years. Recently I re-watched the series highlights on the NHL Networks’ Classic Series show. What can I say? I love rooting for the underdog.
As much as I love the Wings, the Devils are a team that deserves to be in a better place than New Jersey, treated as the red-headed stepchild of the tri-state region.
A lot of people say that, but I love my team where they are. They’re one of the only thing that makes living in this state partially bearable.

Shots: Detroit 2, New Jersey 8
Hits: Detroit 4, New Jersey 6
Faceoffs: Detroit 3, New Jersey 3
NJ GOAL: Langenbrunner (7) (Parise, Zajac) 15:29
Parise sets him up beautifully from behind the net, and Langenbrunner had a wide open net and all the time in the world.

Shots: Detroit 5, New Jersey 10
Hits: Detroit 7, New Jersey 8
Faceoffs: Detroit 7, New Jersey 5
NJ GOAL: Oduya (1) (unassisted) 17:25
In a three on two, Oduya just skates in alone and beats Osgood easily. Osgood looked horrible. 2-0, and the Wings look worse than they did last game.
Alabama knocks off Florida 32-13
For those interested, Alabama just ended Florida’s National Championship hopes and solidified its own spot.
I root for chaos, which is what would happen if Texas doesn’t win. :) BSU or Cinci should be playing for the title.
End of Period 1
If you thought the Oilers game was ugly…tonight makes that look like a highlight video.

Dainius Zubrus doesn’t score goals. He just takes up a roster spot that could be used by a player that’s actually good. When he’s not taking stupid penalties, that is. But right now he’s just taking up space on the Devils IR list, next to Jay Pandolfo and Paul Martin.
as a devils fan just gonna interject here. Last year, I would agree with you. Zubs was a bust. But this year he’s been great. Not a goal scorer, but his play around the boards has been amazing.
Oh and pando’s not on the IR anymore.
Glad to hear that Pando is no longer among the walking wounded. I hope he returns soon. With all of the injuries to the Devils regulars this season, it’s hard to keep track of who exactly is playing on any given night. I turn on the television and am literally saying “Who the heck is Vladimir Zharkov?! I’ve never even heard of half these people!”
5:50 Left: Final TV Timeout
Shots: Detroit 16, New Jersey 16
Hits: Detroit 20, New Jersey 10
Faceoffs: Detroit 17, New Jersey 13
NJ GOAL: Niedermayer (3) (Zharkov) 14:43
Pandolfo skates in, cross-ice pass to Zharkov, who puts it on net, and Niedermayer happened to be in the right place in the right time. The lead’s back to two goals.
there needs to be a rule
in statistical stuff that a power play only counts if its scored on or lasts more than 10 seconds
DET GOAL: Holmstrom PP (11) (Stuart) (19:31)
Brad Stuart sets him up beautifully, camped out in front of the net, and gets his 200th career goal! Back to a one-goal game!
End of Period 2
As much as the Wings are probably happy with cutting the lead to one, they sure looked lucky rather than good. But they’ll take it, no doubt.

Brad Stuart bails out Chris Osgood!
It went past Osgood, and it was only because Stuart was going towards the net. What an insanely lucky break!

DET GOAL: Eaves (2) (Abdekader) 9:30
Abdelkater along the right side boards, and Eaves happened to tip it and it goes past Brodeur. We’re knotted up at three!
They've announced it as Abdelkader's goal.
We’ll see if they change it. If they don’t, it’s Abdelkader’s 4th.

on a side note
i finally found one of the funniest things in NHL history:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=429QFwN8Yy4&NR=1
Boys are reallly starting to battle now
This is the Wings I’m used to, the team that won’t give you an inch and take everything that is given to them.
Brodeur grabs onto holmstrom!
Ref waves off after the Zetterberg chance, and Brodeur just grabs onto Holmstrom! That was great!
I haven’t seen Marty grab a guy and start whaling on him like that since the late ‘90s during a game against the Panthers. Well, not counting the Avery incident, because it’s Avery and therefore expected. Is it as weird for Red Wings fans as it is for me that Avery used to be a Wing? It’s so hard to imagine him in such a structured organization.
Avery deserves it
Yeah, we cringe looking back on that time. We were a little drunk, made a few mistakes…haha
Brodeur having one of his douchier moments
attacks Holmstrom even though Homer was pinned by two Devils

Power Play: Detroit 0/0-1/2-0/1=1/3, New Jersey 0/1-0/1-0/0=0/2
As a Devils fan, I wouldn’t mind a shootout. Parise and Langenbrunner are money in the shootout, and Martin Brodeur is….well, he’s Martin Brodeur.
I've often wondered...
if anyone has ever changed goalies before the shootout begins (like towards end of OT) because one is better than the other in the skills competition

Goes to the backhand, freezes Osgood, and gets it past him easily under Osgood’s left arm.
Brodeur>Ville Leino
Have you ever noticed how Brodeur shakes his gloves, particular if the player is a rookie or new to the NHL like Leino. It’s not nice to play with your food before you eat it, but…
I don’t like taunting, but when you’ve amassed the record Mr. Brodeur has, you can get away with it.
I don’t think it’s taunting, so much as it is psyching out his opponent. Last year during the season opener against the Islanders, Kyle Okposo got a penalty shot. As Okposo skated in, Brodeur purposely left his high gloveside open. Okposo couldn’t resist, and when he took the shot, Brodeur snapped his glove up and knocked the puck away. Okposo either didn’t know or forgot that Brodeur has one of the best glove hands in the game. Brodeur is incredibly intelligent. If his opponent is young or unfamiliar with him, he’ll use that against them, and he isn’t above using his imposing stature as the greatest goalie in the history of the NHL to intimidate his opponents.
greatest goalie in the history of the NHL??
surely you jest! It’s totally Michel Belhumeu!
http://espn.go.com/page2/s/list/worstproteam.html
yeah Eaves is good
I dont’ blame him for picking Bert though, he can do some sick stuff when its 1 v 1
That’s some Scott Stevens-esque ice-time for Lidstrom there. I know Detroit has had more than its fair share of injuries this season and the loss of several regulars on the blue line has led in an increase in Lidstrom’s ice-time. Or does he always play half-an-hour a night? That’s kind of a lot. I would think somewhere around the twenty-five minute mark would be better, but over time could have jacked that up a bit. I don’t know. The Wings don’t want to overtax their best player, though.
ugh another loss
but atleast we got a point after being down 2 goals twice…win tomorrow guys
we seem to have gotten over that HURDLE
thanks for a great season Rockies!
LETS GO WINGS!
