Red Wings vs. Devils Game Thread

Detroit Red Wings at New Jersey Devils, Dec 5, 2009 6:00 PM CST

The Detroit Red Wings head to the New York City area for a pair of games this weekend. Tonight, they face the New Jersey Devils in their first trip to the Prudential Center in Newark.

Detroit is coming off a 4-1 loss to the Edmonton Oilers in a game that was every bit as ugly as the score would indicate. Dan Cleary scored only goal for the Wings. Jakub Kindl made his NHL debut with one shot in 14:18 of ice time.

For New Jersey, they defeated the Tampa Bay Lightning last night 3-2 at home on a goal by Jamie Langenburger with 38.1 seconds left in regulation. It was their seventh win in eight games at home. With the back-to-back games, it will be interesting to see if Jacques Lemaire will go back to Martin Brodeur tonight against the Detroit.

For an alternate view, check out our sister blog In Lou We Trust. Puck drops at 7:00 p.m. ET.  The game is on FS Detroit and MSG Plus. Comment away below!

This will be an interesting game

Hopefully we don’t lie down and let the Devils walk all over us. We gotta get some shots on Brodeur and stuff out of our end because they have a potent offense but even better defensive game and oh you know—-the greatest goalie in the modern era.

The only way I’m skating is if you give me one of those walker-style skating apparatuses.

What a save by Osgood!

Zajak had a wide open net and couldn’t put it in!

by joehass on Dec 5, 2009 6:18 PM CST reply actions

How in hell did Osgood stop that?

Good thing it wasn’t perfectly on target or it would have been 1-0 NJ

by Casey Richey on Dec 5, 2009 6:19 PM CST reply actions

I have a bad feeling...

…if we’re gonna win tonight, Osgood’s gonna have to steal it.

by joehass on Dec 5, 2009 6:19 PM CST reply actions

agreed

NJ is too tough defensively that they can put constant pressure on Oz, gotta hope for PP or something to score on them.

by Casey Richey on Dec 5, 2009 6:20 PM CST up reply actions

This ice is slanted...

…the Wings just can’t get a thing going tonight. It’s ugly.

by joehass on Dec 5, 2009 6:21 PM CST reply actions

its the 95 cup all over again!

Okay so I was 7 at the time but I’ve seen it more recently haha

by Casey Richey on Dec 5, 2009 6:23 PM CST up reply actions

I was seven at the time, too, but I’m a Devils fan so the memory is probably much more pleasant to me, I suppose. Watching that series is what made me into the die hard Devils fan that I’ve been for the past fourteen/fifteen years. Recently I re-watched the series highlights on the NHL Networks’ Classic Series show. What can I say? I love rooting for the underdog.

by kellyn on Dec 5, 2009 7:23 PM CST up reply actions

As much as I love the Wings, the Devils are a team that deserves to be in a better place than New Jersey, treated as the red-headed stepchild of the tri-state region.

by joehass on Dec 5, 2009 7:29 PM CST up reply actions

A lot of people say that, but I love my team where they are. They’re one of the only thing that makes living in this state partially bearable.

by kellyn on Dec 5, 2009 7:33 PM CST up reply actions

That wasn’t a knock on Devils fans by any stretch. Just wish there were more of you.

by joehass on Dec 5, 2009 8:01 PM CST up reply actions

I know. We may not be the largest or the loudest fan base, but we don’t love our team or our players any less because we aren’t a ‘traditional’ hockey market.

by joehass on Dec 5, 2009 7:23 PM CST up reply actions

Oh, how lucky were the Wings!

Zubrus went into the net sans puck. He should’ve had a great chance.

by joehass on Dec 5, 2009 7:24 PM CST reply actions

Dainius Zubrus doesn’t score goals. He just takes up a roster spot that could be used by a player that’s actually good. When he’s not taking stupid penalties, that is. But right now he’s just taking up space on the Devils IR list, next to Jay Pandolfo and Paul Martin.

by kellyn on Dec 5, 2009 7:31 PM CST up reply actions

I knew it was a high-single-digit number, and I had the full roster up instead of the playing roster.

by joehass on Dec 5, 2009 7:32 PM CST up reply actions

as a devils fan just gonna interject here. Last year, I would agree with you. Zubs was a bust. But this year he’s been great. Not a goal scorer, but his play around the boards has been amazing.

Oh and pando’s not on the IR anymore.

by skly27 on Dec 5, 2009 9:17 PM CST up reply actions

Glad to hear that Pando is no longer among the walking wounded. I hope he returns soon. With all of the injuries to the Devils regulars this season, it’s hard to keep track of who exactly is playing on any given night. Brodeur grabs onto holmstrom!

Ref waves off after the Zetterberg chance, and Brodeur just grabs onto Holmstrom! That was great!

by joehass on Dec 5, 2009 8:23 PM CST reply actions

I haven’t seen Marty grab a guy and start whaling on him like that since the late ‘90s during a game against the Panthers. Well, not counting the Avery incident, because it’s Avery and therefore expected. Is it as weird for Red Wings fans as it is for me that Avery used to be a Wing? It’s so hard to imagine him in such a structured organization.

by kellyn on Dec 5, 2009 8:26 PM CST up reply actions

Avery deserves it

Yeah, we cringe looking back on that time. We were a little drunk, made a few mistakes…haha

by joehass on Dec 5, 2009 8:26 PM CST reply actions

As a Devils fan, I wouldn’t mind a shootout. Parise and Langenbrunner are money in the shootout, and Martin Brodeur is….well, he’s Martin Brodeur.

Hence why we’d like to end this in the five minutes, thank you. :)

by joehass on Dec 5, 2009 8:28 PM CST up reply actions

That’s what I figured. The Devils have a very good record in shootouts this season.

by kellyn on Dec 5, 2009 8:29 PM CST up reply actions

The Wings record is just atrocious. We abohr the skill competition.

by joehass on Dec 5, 2009 8:30 PM CST up reply actions

I abhor the skillz kompetition to. It’s pretty much the only reason the Rangers (our most hated rival aside from the Flyers) actually made the playoffs. It’s just so not hockey.

Brodeur>Ville Leino

Have you ever noticed how Brodeur shakes his gloves, particular if the player is a rookie or new to the NHL like Leino. It’s not nice to play with your food before you eat it, but…

by kellyn on Dec 5, 2009 8:40 PM CST reply actions

I don’t like taunting, but when you’ve amassed the record Mr. Brodeur has, you can get away with it.

by joehass on Dec 5, 2009 8:41 PM CST up reply actions

I don’t think it’s taunting, so much as it is psyching out his opponent. Last year during the season opener against the Islanders, Kyle Okposo got a penalty shot. As Okposo skated in, Brodeur purposely left his high gloveside open. Okposo couldn’t resist, and when he took the shot, Brodeur snapped his glove up and knocked the puck away. Okposo either didn’t know or forgot that Brodeur has one of the best glove hands in the game. Brodeur is incredibly intelligent. If his opponent is young or unfamiliar with him, he’ll use that against them, and he isn’t above using his imposing stature as the greatest goalie in the history of the NHL to intimidate his opponents.

by kellyn on Dec 5, 2009 8:48 PM CST up reply actions

True: taunting was the wrong word.

That’s some Scott Stevens-esque ice-time for Lidstrom there. I know Detroit has had more than its fair share of injuries this season and the loss of several regulars on the blue line has led in an increase in Lidstrom’s ice-time. Or does he always play half-an-hour a night? That’s kind of a lot. I would think somewhere around the twenty-five minute mark would be better, but over time could have jacked that up a bit. I don’t know. The Wings don’t want to overtax their best player, though.
