Game Thread: Red Wings v Blues
St. Louis Blues at Detroit Red Wings, Dec 9, 2009 6:30 PM CST
The Detroit Red Wings come home after a reasonably successful New York City two-night tour to take on the St. Louis Blues at Joe Louis Arena tonight.
The Blues were shut out at home last night 4-0 at home by the Colorado Avalanche. This is the fourth meeting of the season between the two teams: St. Louis won the first two in Sweden, while the Wings won their November 27 meeting in St. Louis.
For an alternate view, visit our sister blog, St. Louis Game Time. The game is on FS Detroit, FS Midwest, and the US NHL Network (which means it is not on the US Center Ice package). Puck drop is 7:30. We'll see you then!

STL GOAL: Boyes (8) (Colaicovo, McDonald) 1:56
Andy McDonald breaks loose from behind the net, passes up top to Carlo Colaiacovo, who sees a Boyes to the right of Howard and passes it to him. He doesn’t miss from five feet out, and it’s 1-0.
Disappointing defensive breakdown on that goal...
They couldn’t close up on Andy McDonald which set up the goal.

Abdelkader has a shot and Conklin didn't know he had it...
…then he got a lucky whistle because that puck wasn’t really under him.
Zetterberg with a good chance...
…but at a bad angle. The Wings are nicely pressuring Conklin tonight.

Winchester and Maltby and May having discussions...
…light pushing…now Winchester and May are still talking…now Jackman talking smack to May.
Blues try to set up Andy McDonald...
…can’t do it the first time, but does the second, and Howard makes the save.
End of Period 1
Wings had a chance with an offensive zone faceoff with eight seconds left, but can’t convert. Detroit has to be a little frustrated with all the chances and no goals.

Bertuzzi in alone...
…stopped…but the whistle was in the process of being blown as another Wing pushes it through it. The fans are expressing an eight-letter displeasure towards that call.

…more pushing and shoving. 22 seconds left. They’re trying, but Conklin’s doing great.
Howard on his stomach...
…makes one great save, then reaches out for another to hold what seems like an eternity before getting a whistle.

Red Wings are just not firing on all cylinders.
They need to just break through, though the way Conklin is playing, that may be a hard order.
