[Game Thread] Wings @ Thrashers

The Detroit Red Wings (47-15-9) will face off against the Atlanta Thrashers (29-36-6) tonight at the Philips Arena.

Valtteri Filppula's status for today's game is questionable so we probably won't know if he'll play until shortly before the puck drops. However, we do know that Tomas Holmstrom will not be in the lineup due to a knee injury. Unfortunately, defenseman Andreas Lilja is still out with headaches and his return is unknown.

The lines during Thursday's practice were as follows:

Franzen-Datsyuk-Samuelsson
Cleary-Zetterberg-Hossa
Hudler-Filppula-Kopecky
Meech-Draper-Maltby

Lidstrom-Rafalski
Kronwall-Stuart
Lebda-Ericsson

As you can see, Derek Meech will play as a forward to fill in for Holmstrom's absence. If Filppula is unable to play, then defenseman Chris Chelios will dress. Yes, that doesn't seem to work since Filppula is a forward and Cheli is not. However, the Wings do not have the cap space to allow the team to call up a forward from Grand Rapids so they will have to make do tonight.

Chris Osgood will start in net for the Wings for the fourth straight game after his solid play over the past few games.

The interesting story of the night will be Marian Hossa's first game back in Atlanta since he was traded to the Pittsburgh Penguins by last season's trade deadline.

The game starts at 7:30 p.m. and will be shown on FSDetroit. I will be working the CCHA hockey tournament at Joe Louis Arena all day Friday and Saturday. As a result, I will be unable to comment during the game or write a game recap following the game. Even though I'm not here, please feel free to leave your comments about the game. Go Wings!

Tonight's game

I got some great shots from the game tonight. Check out my twitter profile for the links to those pics.

As far as the game itself goes, all I have to say is, “Wow.” They looked very very sharp tonight. Of course this was the first Wings game I’ve seen live since November, so take it with a grain of salt, but they looked really good IMO. They did let a couple go through late in the game, but they pretty much played tip top hockey.

Osgood would probably be my player of the game. I thought he was stellar in net, making huge saves early in the first and second periods. I noticed on several occasions there would be rebound opportunities and Ozzy swept them away with his stick with perfection. He did give up two power play goals in the third, which I wouldn’t blame on him at all. Especially, the second one, which looked like he was completely screened on a slap shot that snuck through. (I didn’t see the third goal, which came with less than a minute left because my ride wanted to leave and catch the MSU basketball game. Lame; I know).

Hossa was booed pretty much every time he touched the puck, which was fine. He shut the crowd up with his pretty wrister from just outside the left circle in the third period.

Other notes:
—2/3 the crowd was probably Wings fans. It was very loud and when the little Thrashers fans tried to get “let’s go thrashers” chants, they were drowned out by the lovely “let’s go Red Wings!”
—Philips Arena is absolutely gorgeous. If anyone is ever in Atlanta area, they should definitely check it out. Leather, theater like seats, and just overall beautiful insides to the arena. the box seats resemble those at Ford Field. I can’t think of how else to explain it other than to just tell you to make sure you visit if you’re ever in the ATL.

Good win for the Wings. I’m happy I was there.
