[GDT] Wings vs. Penguins Game 2

Pittsburgh Penguins at Detroit Red Wings, May 31, 2009 7:00 PM CDT

Last night, the Detroit Red Wings snagged a 1-0 series lead with a 3-1 victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins in Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Finals. Just 24 hours later the two teams face off again at Joe Louis Arena for what should be another exciting game.

As WIM reported earlier today, Kris Draper and Pavel Datsyuk will not play today due to their respective injuries. Detroit showed they were able to beat the Penguins without those two players. Amazingly, the Wings had a faceoff win percentage of 71 last night without Drapes and Dats -- their top two faceoff guys.

Questions to ask today:

  • After a great performance from goaltender Chris Osgood (outside of the one PIT goal), can he do it again tonight?
  • Will Henrik Zetterberg, Nick Lidstrom, and Brian Rafalski be able to keep Sidney Crosby off the board again?
  • How will the teams play with a mere 24 hours between puck drops? Will they have enough energy to have a similar style of play like yesterday's contest?

You can catch the game on NBC (U.S.) as well as CBC and RDS (Canada) for tonight's game at 8 p.m. EDT. Go Wings!

Hey,

Pens fan here; just wanted to throw a few thoughts out to see what you guys think.

I think Christy’s first question about goaltending is going to be really key. Osgood was great last night and Fleury looked lost at times, but while Ozzie is much more consistent overall; when Fleury’s on he’s a BEAST. Which Fleury is going to show up tonight?

I also think the Crosby/Maltby incident is going to be huge. (I love Crosby’s playing ability but when he does stuff like that I have to shake my head and remind myself he’s only 21). I have a feeling it could go two ways. Either Maltby is completely in Sid’s head tonight or (as he has done in the past) Crosby feeds off the emotion and has a huge game.

Great blog! Thanks!

by NaFedaykin on May 31, 2009 5:36 PM CDT reply actions

yeah i thought Fleury looked lost too, Ozzie is a monster in the playoffs and is pretty calm. But I agree, when Fleury is on, he’s hard to beat.
The Maltby/Crosby thing is pretty interesting too. It could be nothing but it could be the start of a big battle between Crosby and Malts or someone else even. The question I have is does anyone in Pittsburgh feel as if Crosby’s hit on Zetterberg was an elbow? I’ve only seen the replay a few times but to me it looked like he stuck out his elbow

by Casey Richey on May 31, 2009 5:42 PM CDT up reply actions

I want to say he lead with his shoulder (but that could be the homer in me) I don’t think the angle they showed the reply on was great. I haven’t heard anyone really talking about the hit. It’s always hard to tell with hits over the middle.

Cooke’s hit after the whistle was stupid stupid stupid and should have been a penalty. I hate that it wasn’t called because it gives the conspiracy theorists more fuel for the fire.

by NaFedaykin on May 31, 2009 5:51 PM CDT up reply actions

yeah Cooke’s hit shoulda been called but ya move on. Same with the hit on Hank, I’m over it. It might have been an elbow but the Pens and Wings are two of the cleaner teams in the league so I doubt it was intentional.

by Casey Richey on May 31, 2009 5:58 PM CDT up reply actions

The hit on Hank was one of those where if it had been Cooke (or Kronwall maybe) making the hit I might have thought “Penalty!” right away but being that it was Crosby, like you said, you figure even if he did he wasn’t trying to

by NaFedaykin on May 31, 2009 6:04 PM CDT up reply actions

I think it was intentional. Crosby is a smart kid. He knows whose on the ice. He is getting shut down by Z and gave him a shot. It should have been a penalty but then again its hockey.
More importantly, I think it shows that Crosby is frustrated (adding in the “two-hander” to Maltby). Which is very good. Lets hope they are in his head and he starts to let his emotions get the best of him. If he wants to get into the rough stuff then he isn’t focusing on scoring. Advantage Detroit.

by TuLoRocks2008 on May 31, 2009 6:00 PM CDT up reply actions

Okay, here is my biggest question about tonight’s game. What will Pittsburgh do differently? Obviously they didn’t get blown out. The score should have been 3-0 but many are saying that from the 2nd period on Pittsburgh was the better team (which I neither agree with nor understand). With that being said the Penguins were not horrible but still need to make adjustments. But how much can they realistically change? The role that Zetterberg plays against Crosby is phenomenal. I have seen a lot of Penguins hockey (seeing as I am a Flyers fan and go to college near Pittsburgh) and besides my boy Mike Richards, I really haven’t seen anyone capable of partially shutting down Crysby let alone completely shutting him down the way that Z does. Pittsburgh’s biggest problem is getting production from players other than Malkin and Crosby. Considering, those other players, like Fedetenko, Kunitz, Guerin, Talbot, Cooke and Sykora are mediocre at best, it really comes down to Crosby and/or Malkin. If Crosby continues to be frustrated by Z and Malkin remains absent, which he tends to do from time to time, I don’t see how the Penguins are going to win this series. I am sure they will come out ready tonight and will eventually get some sort of production from the rest of the team but will it be too little too late? I sure as hell hope so . . .

Either way, tonight is the more important game. Whoever wins Game 2 has the momentum (if you believe in that sort of thing) and holds the upper hand heading to Pittsburgh. Lets hope the Red Wings hold all the momentum and control this series with another convincing win tonight. Go Wings.

Scoring picks: Frazen, Holmstrom, Samuelsson and maybe Hossa (He was a man on a mission last night. Looked hungry!)

by flyrsfrk05 on May 31, 2009 5:50 PM CDT reply actions

I only watched the third period, listening to the first two online, so this opinion might be skewed by what Ken Kal (detroit’s radio announcer, if yu’re not familiar with him)….but it seemed like the first period was pretty even with the Wings having a slight edge, and the Pens ruled most of Period two, save the last 3-4 minutes.

Watching the third, I got the impression that the Wings had clamped down, and even though they weren’t getting that many great chances themselves, Detroit controlled the period by completely frustrating the Pens ability to set up their attack.

So, overall, I wouldn’t say Detroit dominated (not that you’re saying it either), and if you’re looking just at the last two periods, overall, maybe Pittsburgh did have the better of it. Detroit got the bounces, and made them stand up, and so we get to enjoy the lead for one night, and hopefully have the momentum going into the second game…

by ahtrap on May 31, 2009 6:07 PM CDT up reply actions

Yea I think you are right. Neither team dominated but Pittsburgh’s attack was stifled making it pretty much non-existent. That was the difference. Detroit didn’t need to play run and gun and the production they got was perfect.

Hossa was flying last night! He scares me. He and Helm made Gil look like he was standing still.

I think the Pens MUST even up the face-offs and widen the gap in takeaways if that want to be in this game

I really hope we put the screws to them tonight

i am getting sick and tired of hearing about “lucky bounce this, lucky bounce that”.

when you dominate the face offs and puck position like we did we EARNED those goals…and the Franzen one off Fleury’s leg pad c’mon…if he doesn’t touch that Cleary is literally right there to put the puck in…and how about the Zetterberg shot off the post…we deserved 3 goals in the game.

1) Pittsburgh often tries to slip fwds in behind the Detroit defence and;
2) The Wings didn’t play as smart as they could have with the puck in their zone. (which resulted in Pits lone goal)

Yes its still early and Pittsburgh has to play a full 60 mins. Obviously Wings are gonna score. They get on Pit quick and start to slowly chip away . . .

hossa

so one thing that’s been pissing me off about the whole hossa thing is that they imply that whether or not his decision to go to the wings was correct will be determined by the outcome of this series… that is such bs. at the start of the season the wings DID have a better chance of winning the cup than the pens. the fact that the pens had to fire their coach mid-season pretty much proves that. it doesn’t mean anything now, but clearly he was right that detroit had the better chance. (not to take anything away from pitt making it this far, but they definitely came from further back to do it than detroit did…) ok… end rant.

Not saying the refs have been great but that butt end to Staal’s face earlier was pretty rough and could have been 2 mins

by NaFedaykin on May 31, 2009 8:04 PM CDT up reply actions

but you have to be in control of your stick

“Any contact made by a stick on an opponent above the shoulders is prohibited and a minor shall be imposed subject to section (b) of this Rule.”

by NaFedaykin on May 31, 2009 8:06 PM CDT up reply actions

i know rules are rules, but 1.) Ozzie had his back turned to Staal and 2.) Staal could have moved

Either way, I do know what you mean though.

by Casey Richey on May 31, 2009 8:08 PM CDT up reply actions

If there’s one thing that I hope will come out of these playoffs, it’s the focus on consistancy. The league has simply lost the level of consistancy that you need for a professional sports league. I’m not just talking person-to-person, I’m talking game-to-game.

After they get that done, then they can fix the farkakte rule book.

by joehass on May 31, 2009 8:11 PM CDT up reply actions

right… the point is… there was a heck of a lot worse that was let pass than the one that was called. it’s the inconsistency that’s so frustrating

by EricV on May 31, 2009 8:05 PM CDT up reply actions

definitely inconsistent I completely agree I was just pointing out that it hasn’t been all going the Pens way

What is most unnerving was that it was as if the Red Wings had simply turned off the switch after about 11 minutes. At one point, they had a 7-1 shot lead, and then it all went away. I don’t know what the deal was, and I’m sure Babcock is discussing that right now in the locker room.

Holmstrom needs to wake up. Heck…the whole team needs to wake up.

by joehass on May 31, 2009 8:08 PM CDT reply actions

More Quality Announcing

Hey guys, ’Canes fan here. I see that the Penguins PR group (ie, the announcers) are continuing in their fair-and-balanced reporting of the game just like in our series.

I notice that when the Penguins score, they’ve got lots of natural skill, but when Detroit scores, Bylsma is “handling the adversity well.” WTF? Oh, and Malkin somehow got subtly interfered with from 5 feet away.

So anyways, I know what you’re thinking, and it’s not just you. =)

My team’s out, but for this series, I think I’m gonna have to pull for the Wings if nothing else because I don’t think I could handle an entire offseason of them talking about how Crosby put the team on his back to win the Cup or some other load of crap. Ugh.

So uh… Go Wings!

by adamgreuel on May 31, 2009 9:51 PM CDT up reply actions

unreal that he won't be suspended

what would piss me off in Game 3 is if we go back at him and say Kronwall hits him like he did Havlat he will get kicked out…

3 more wins for back to back on the Pens and a repeat Go Wings!!!

Instigator penalty in the final five minutes = automatic suspension for next game

by joehass on May 31, 2009 9:51 PM CDT up reply actions

right, but like adam says above, they can overturn it and they did for walker before… they’ll obviously do it for malkin too

by EricV on May 31, 2009 9:52 PM CDT up reply actions

Of course...

…we found out the week after that Walker’s wife was diagnosed with cancer earlier in the series. I still wonder if that was part of the extenuating circumstances that led to the ruling. I don’t think it was a “sucker” punch, but it was a dumb punch, and a suspension would have been justified.

Malkin isn’t so “lucky.”

by Raccoon Fink on May 31, 2009 9:56 PM CDT up reply actions

There was a big controversy earlier in the playoffs in which someone was supposed to get a suspension and the NHL inexplicably said no without an explanation.

by joehass on May 31, 2009 9:52 PM CDT up reply actions

One last note

In the playoffs, we’ve seen fights from Datsyuk and Zetterberg. That was something i didn’t see coming into the playoffs.

Congrats

I expected better out of Cindy, but he is looking pretty helpless. Would be nice to see Detroit actually take some chances on offense, but it isn’t their way. Defense, Defense, Defenses, grab mistake, bury it in opposing net. Coast on lead, repeat first step, bounce puck of trampoline boards, score again. Repeat first step, frustrate top scorer, shoot for empty net. Repeat for four games, wait for octopi to rain down, skate with cup. Same as last year, nothing new to see and not much excitement to hope for if neither of these teams are your hometown team.

Good for your team and fans to be up two games. Not so much for NBC and versus as most other hockey fans lose interest at a repeat of last year. Hopefully better luck for the rest of us next year who would like to see a bigger fan base. Sorry Pens, you had your best two chances with back to back games. The wings now look like they are on autopilot.

Good Stat:

Of the 44 teams to take a 2-0 series lead in the Stanley Cup Finals, 41 have gone on to win the Stanley Cup. It hasn’t been done since the 1971 Montreal Canadiens.
