Malkin suspension rescinded

Well that was fast....

National Hockey League Executive Vice President and Director of Hockey Operations Colin Campbell issued the following statement regarding the instigator penalty assessed to Pittsburgh's Evgeni Malkin at 19:41 of the third period of tonight’s Game 2 of the Stanley Cup Final:

Rule 47.22 states: "A player who is deemed to be the instigator of an altercation in the final five minutes or at any time in overtime shall be suspended for one game, pending a review of the incident. The director of hockey operations will review every such incident and may rescind the suspension based on a number of criteria. The criteria for the review shall include, but not be limited to, the score, previous incidents, etc..."

Following that review, Campbell said: "None of the criteria in this rule applied in this situation. Suspensions are applied under this rule when a team attempts to send a message in the last five minutes by having a player instigate a fight. A suspension could also be applied when a player seeks retribution for a prior incident. Neither was the case here and therefore the one game suspension is rescinded."

Malkin

It’s not as if this wasn’t expected. I for one agree with the decision here. It’s the finals, tensions run high and I for one wouldn’t want to see the Wings win game 3 with Malkin out because you know us Wings fans would never hear the end of it.

by Thalategreat on May 31, 2009 11:15 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Never hear the end of it?

Heck, Malkin didn’t show up for the first four games of last year’s Finals. Why would they miss him in Game 3?

by Misopogon on Jun 1, 2009 8:54 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Ya I agree as well

Just am not sure that it would have been done as quickly had it been Zetterberg with the Suspension.

I second that

I agree the NHL probably made the right call here, but wonder if they would have done the same thing for a Detroit player.

by Lostincali on May 31, 2009 11:57 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

I wonder too...

But, I also wonder if this had been a 3rd or 4th line player from either team! The NHL this post-season has shown that it’s not going to hand out suspensions, which can be both good and bad. This situation, I agree with the NHL, to a point which I already made.

Anyway, Detroit will hopefully have Datsyuk back for game 3. I just hope this series goes atleast 5 games, I don’t want to be at work, AGAIN, and see the Wings win a Cup and not be able to celebrate.

by jryno on Jun 1, 2009 7:14 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Naw there was no way that they suspend him. They wouldn’t suspend anyone in the finals unless they nearly kill a guy. Really what Malkin did wasn’t worth a suspension anyway. It’s a dumb rule. I was a little surprised they ruled so quickly but that was it.

by EricV on May 31, 2009 11:58 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

It’s only fair they didn’t suspend him, they haven’t called any of the 354 interference calls on the wings not to mention a slashing call resulting in a broken stick and a goal…penalties? what are penalties?

by JasonGoPens on Jun 1, 2009 9:24 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

complain much?

Picks are interference too and i’ve counted an incredible amount by the Penguins. What about Cooke’s elbow to Holmstrom’s head after the whistle?

by Casey Richey on Jun 1, 2009 10:02 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

What slash....

97.1 The Ticket, if not yet, but will soon have another angle of this “supposed slash” from Hossa on Dupuis. Actually, Dupuis broke his stick slashing Hossa on his skate. So Jason, before you speak please get your facts straight. The Pens are reacting the same way the Hawks did in the Conference Finals, but it took Chicago 5 games to get aggravated, whereas its taken the Pens 1. And of the 354 supposed interference calls that were not called on the Wings, there were just as many not called on the Pens. So, I have to think that this is the most evenly officiated series thus far in the playoffs. Be glad they are not calling everything because I assume that if the officials were, you’d be bitching about that.

I’m no suggesting they call more on the wings, i want them to call ALL penalties. If it’s a penalty call it, that will even it up, because i guarantee we have twice as many power plays.

by JasonGoPens on Jun 1, 2009 12:41 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Piss on MORE power plays. I like this 5 on 5 stuff. Way more exciting than watching 1000 blocked point shots. This Finals is a definite improvement over last years’ penalty parade.

by Sean Zandberg on Jun 1, 2009 3:29 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

The reason penalties are called is to deter players from doing things that are illegal, you don’t call the penalties then play runs amok with them and your game plan of obstruction hockey and setting picks takes over the game and it’s 1994 again, the opposite of what the NHL has evolved into. So apparently they aren’t worried that thier little “New NHL” baby is being ruined these finals.

by JasonGoPens on Jun 1, 2009 4:01 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Jason, Jason, Jason...

Are you saying this, “So apparently they aren’t worried that thier little "New NHL" baby is being ruined these finals.” because your Pens, and Cindy Crosby, are the face of the new NHL? I’ve been watching hockey since the 80s, as I am in my early 30s, and I remember scoring was up, and fighting was up. Now, in my opinion the thing that is ruining this “new NHL” is all these stupid NBA type of penalties. But, since Bettman came from the NBA should we expect different? If we want to see another player score 200+ points in a season, the league needs to go back to the way it was in the 80s and the league needs to reduce the width of the goalie pads and increase the size of the net.

by jryno on Jun 1, 2009 4:28 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I’m saying that the league made a decision to turn the games in a different direction. No one wants to see obstruction trap hockey that the Devils made oh so unpopular in the 90’s. They want to see 50 goal seasons from Ovechkin, they just do. It brings in fans that’s why they evolved it. But what you appear to be saying is you want the broadstreet bully hockey again, you want tiny goalies and big nets with 200 point seasons and the stars getting raped left and right by the enforcers? correct?

by JasonGoPens on Jun 1, 2009 4:35 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Not exactly...

No, I just want to see that type of game when the Wings play your beloved Avs.

Jason is not a Pens fan, like his name suggests. He is a die-hard Av’s fan who can’t bear to see the Wings win.

by jryno on Jun 2, 2009 9:29 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I’ve never even seen an av’s fan they are a myth.

by JasonGoPens on Jun 2, 2009 9:56 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Then why...

Are you on the Pens blog bragging about not being a Penguins fan, but you hate the Wings so you figured you’d root for the Pens to win the Cup?

by jryno on Jun 3, 2009 6:40 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

When did i ever say i wasn’t a pens fan, are you all half retarded?

by JasonGoPens on Jun 4, 2009 7:52 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I’ll take all the penalties our boys do in trade for all the penalties your boys commit, i bet we have a ton more power plays. That would be an even trade, we need to start blowing that whistle more, maybe Bettman will start to pull some strings, you know he wants Crosby winning that cup.

by JasonGoPens on Jun 1, 2009 10:30 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

finally a Pens fan admits it! haha just messing with you, yeah I’ll admit there are a ton of missed calls, on both sides, in this series but i think the NHL might be trying to air on the side of not having too many calls to be a complaint. In the end, it will probably even out over the course of the series.

by Casey Richey on Jun 1, 2009 10:35 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Dude...?

I can understand being upset about the series so far, most of us would be the same if things were going the other way…but more penalties…? That’s suprising to hear any fan, of any sport say they want to hear more whistles blow, but a hockey fan…? I think they call way too many penalties as it is, whether its the Wings playing or not. I know it won’t happen, but I’m pullin for the Stache to ref every game the rest of the way, just so we can watch a little Hockey being played. More whistles…?!

by Mushy on Jun 1, 2009 8:38 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Calling a penalty sends a message to the teams saying HEY! stop it or we’ll keep calling penalties, you want them to just ignore them, which is what they are doing, so you can keep with your obstruction trap hockey, that’s what you want.

by JasonGoPens on Jun 2, 2009 9:58 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Nope

Of course I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t biased, but that doesn’t change the fact that I prefer Hockey to be a fluid yet physical game played at a high speed. That, in my opinion, is what separates Hockey from other sports. I love the strategy involved with baseball and football, I like the athletisism displayed on the basketball court, but none of those sports play at a pace so demanding that players have to be changed in and out on the fly every minute or so. Hockey is a great game when it can be played with little interruption. While it would be great if both teams on the ice simply played by all the rules so that there is no need for refs, that will never happen. I do prefer it, however, when there are few calls, few whistles and few stoppages during the game.

Just to separate myself a little from the typical homer-fan, game four against Chicago was absolutely dominated by the Redwings but was brutal to watch due to all the whistles. I know the league was trying to send the message that there would be no retaliation for the ridiculous call on a brutal hit from Kronwall the night before, but to me it took what would have been a great physical game and turned it into a basketball game. They might as well have shot pucks at an open net from the blue line (my lame attempt to associate free-throws to hockey).

So keep complaining if you want about the way the Wings are playing, but my suggestion to your team would be…if you can’t beat ’em, join ’em. The rules are the same regardless of what color jersey your wearing so play the game however it needs to be played to win, accept the fact that refs will not always get it right, and for your own sake…quit whining!

by Mushy on Jun 2, 2009 10:33 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Any suggestion about how to ref the game is whining if you do not agree with it. If you dissagree with my opinion on the games and how they should be officiated it’s automatically whining. And again, i’m not bitching that Detroit should be getting more penalties, WE BOTH SHOULD BE GETTING MORE CALLS. I can’t say it any more clear than that, and if you still don’t get my point you need some help, like professional help, you need to be shipped to sweden and be stuidied at the university level, not just one person, teams of doctors examining you studying you trying to figure out why there is this wall around your brain that is not letting simple things in.

by JasonGoPens on Jun 2, 2009 10:58 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think the level of officiating has been just fine. I’m excited that the refs are just letting them play instead of taking the game over by over calling things. As others have said, there easily could have been more penalties called on both sides, but I think it slows the game down and takes away a lot of the fun. When the game is going, the transitions from end to end are so fast and make it an exciting game to watch. When the officials are blowing whistles the game slows down and gets boring. I for one hope they keep it the way it is, because if they start calling penalties it will ultimately lead to some bad calls on both sides and ruin the game.

by Sgerbs on Jun 2, 2009 2:19 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

That is exactly what I see too

Just like they did in the NBA…..unless it is serious they do not call a foul. However, I do not agree with it as I feel that it takes away from the fundamentals of the game.

by KDawg on Jun 5, 2009 11:37 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

One has to wonder...

That if it wasn’t “world class” Malkin involved in this incident if it would of had the same outcome. Even Melrose said the exact same thing about 3minutes ago on sportscenter. Especially with the NHL struggling to attract viewers against the boring NBA playoffs. Part of the rule is if the fight is seeked in retribution for a prior incident. Does getting schooled by Hank all night and playing sub-par all series count as a prior incident?? Cuz I’m sure that added to Malkin’s lil’ tantrum last night, hence an justified suspension. Oh well, like someone said earlier, us Wing’s fans wouldn’t hear the end of it, if we beat ‘em with no Malkin. We’ll take ‘em either way. Suprised it wasn’t CYndy causin’ all this whining and crying. If Maltby would have took out Crosby, after he pulled that stunt post Game 1, would Crosby have recieved a instigator suspension? Probably not. If it was Kronwall in Malkin’s position, would the outcome have been the same? Definately NOT.

by DetroitALLtheWay09 on Jun 1, 2009 10:36 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Star power, like how ovechkin didn’t get suspended for a knee on knee hit, intentionally or not should have been a suspension. That’s the way it is they get special treatement, hence your very original nickname Cindy.

by JasonGoPens on Jun 1, 2009 10:49 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

i agree, preferential treatment for star players is disgusting. Ovie should have been suspended but didn’t. Several other examples but we all know it happens and we all agree that it’s ridiculous. Guys like Datsyuk and Hossa get it too, probably why the Hossa slash wasn’t called

by Casey Richey on Jun 1, 2009 10:53 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

true, true. but it sure didn’t help at all that dupois just pretty much stopped playing and started crying on his way to the bench after being “slashed” thats just not playoff hockey, let alone FINALS hockey. i.e. Hank falling on his butt while clearing the puck with his skate a few games ago. Thats how it’s done. It all evens out somewhat, especially with the NO call on the talbot LATE poke/push/prod to Osgood. Damn good thing that wasn’t a goal. terrible. Let ‘em play but don’t let ’em get away with murder.

Something to keep me busy at work, i like to hear what fans say with thier team colored glasses on. You can have Hossa, he never was on our team he was a rent-a-player.

by JasonGoPens on Jun 1, 2009 10:55 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

we will, thank you

It seems your fellow pens fans feel differently. A very bitter feeling. With all the booing every time he touches the puck and I expect no different tomorrow night, as well. They even talked about it with him last night in the post-game. So it’s obviously an issue for you guys. Even still, ya can’t blame the guy. Not even pens fans deep down.

by DetroitALLtheWay09 on Jun 1, 2009 11:04 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Jason, I agree with DATW09...

If Hossa was a rent-a-player, then why before this series started was that the hot topic? All of Pittsburgh is pissed that Hossa spurned them for Detroit because he knew Detroit afforded him the best chance at winning the Cup.

I do like that you have the balls enough to voice you Pittsburgh opinion on a Wings blog. Please keep your opinions flowing, its making for great conversation and debate.

by jryno on Jun 1, 2009 12:29 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

The media made it that way. It’s a story to spark interest, and in this story Hossa and Crosby “supposedley” had many conversations about how well they work together and how they each can’t wait to try next year, and how he’s not leaving. Did these conversations happen? did he betray Crosby? sounds like a soap opera story constructed to spark interest. Alot of people hate Hossa for “lying” about coming back i don’t care, but i’m in the minority. 16k people tomorrow will be letting him know how much they hate him, but i think it’s silly. I’d rather have them serenade Osgood and try to distract him, don’t worry about Hossa. But that’s just me i guess.

by JasonGoPens on Jun 1, 2009 12:50 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

And you guys replaced Hossa The Rental with who then? Satan? Guerin? How about Ryan Malone? Replaced him with Fedotenko?
Losing Hossa was a big deal because he’s a star player.

by Sean Zandberg on Jun 1, 2009 3:33 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Just a thought...

But since the NHL players voted Cindy Crosby as the biggest whiner, if this is not just him crying because he didn’t get his way so he made Hossa out to be the bad guy.

by jryno on Jun 1, 2009 4:20 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

good call, it apparently has no effect on Hossa anyways. As seen in the display earlier this year on the big NBC “rematch game” in pitts. which ended in a Detroit blow-out. Man that must have been sweet for Hossa to shove it right back down their gullets, scoring on his former home-ice in such a game. If those conversations were true, I think we would have heard more about it. When crosby cries, he cries loud, so people listen. Not saying him and malkin aren’t greatly skilled players. Just that there’s more to it… to be the best.

by DetroitALLtheWay09 on Jun 1, 2009 1:04 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Malkin and Hossa

The fact that Malkin was not suspended for another game is just fine. As many have pointed out before, if they did not suspend Walker, why would they suspend Malkin. What makes me happy about the fight (if you can call it that), is that Malkin is incredibly frustrated with how things are going. Which is good, because Malkin has proved up to this point that when you get physical with him and frustrate him he does not play well. It’s the beginning of the end for the Penguins.

Hossa, in my opinion he is overrated. I know he put up decent numbers in the regular season, but he has not been playing Red Wings hockey in the post season. If you watched either game 1 or game 2, he has not skated hard into the corners like Helm, Abdelkader, and many other Wings. In order for him to be effective, he has to skate hard into the corners and make things happen when he gets there. Hossa has speed that hardly anyone can match when he wants to use it (see game 4 of Wings-Hawks), but he hasn’t been using it. I’m glad the Red Wings resigned Franzen instead of Hossa.

by Sgerbs on Jun 1, 2009 3:00 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

I’d disagee with the Malkin can’t play well when frustrated part, because you don’t want to piss Geno off. Witness what happened in game 2 of the Canes-Pens ECF series. Malkin got into a little tiff in the second period, got mad, and was an absolute beast the rest of the game, with probably THE highlight goal from this year’s playoffs, and a hat trick by the end of it all.

I’m glad the scrum happened at the very end of the game, rather than midway through the second period, with 30 minutes left for him to go off….

by ahtrap on Jun 1, 2009 8:52 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

The Hurricanes play a 4-1 scheme in which it is not difficult for someone like Malkin or Crosby to be “absolute beasts.” Malkin and Crosby are very gifted offensive players, and when a team does not really play defense, it is not hard to score on them. Malkin can get sidetracked by people getting physical with him and take him out of his game. The Red Wings are starting to do that, and I think we will see more of the same tonight.

Diagree

One of the best but not the best. There is no one guy that is the best. They all have their own strengths and there is not a guy that’s 100% complete as an offensive player in the league. Datsyuk, Malkin, Ovechkin, Crosby, and to a lesser extent Kovalchuk are all great at certain aspects of the offensive game but there’s not one guy that has it all.

And to answer your next question, Malkin doesn’t have the breakaway/shootout skill that some of the other guys have

The Wings

are going to make adjustments. I expect Malkin to play less of a factor in the remaining games. It will be up to Crosby to carry his team to a title…..I don’t think he has what it takes yet. Wings in 7, and Malkin does not score another goal.
