SI: Wings to lock up Hossa for seven years

From SI.com's Michael Farber:

While nothing will be announced during the Stanley Cup final, unrestricted free agent Marian Hossa likely will be signing a long-term deal, believed to be seven years, to stay with the Red Wings . . .

I assume this means no Hudler and Samuelsson next year based on projected cap numbers.  It also probably means a full-time stay for our AHL stars is pretty much guaranteed, too (it would have been tough to keep them down after how well they have played anyways).

UPDATE: Ken Holland denied the report:

"There is no agreement on a deal,'' Holland said. "We've never had conversations about a seven-year deal in the three months I have talked to him. No truth to it.''

Oh Man...

I would rather not have Hossa unless he starts to be a more complete player. He is not playing Red Wings hockey, and for that I say let him go.

You think so? I have seen several good defensive plays out of Hossa so far in the playoffs. Seems to me he is playing 2-way hockey — a key prerequisite for being a Red Wing — even though he’s not totally comfortable in the system.

I think Huds is expendable as well with the play of Helm and Abdelkader.

that was my reaction too. I wonder how much cap space we have left after this is my main concern.

I like this move...

Alot. Samuelsson and Hudler are both good players that will be missed. But with theyoung talent Detroit has rising through the ranks, it was only a matter of time until these two werte out the door anyways.

This is great news for guys like Leino and Abdelkader, who will get rewarded for all of their hard work in in GR as well as in these playoffs.

And remember, Samuelsson’s best NHL season = 45 points (22 G, 23 A). Hudler = 57 points (23 G, 34 A).

Hossa = 100 (43 G, 57 A)

100 point scorers don’t come around often. Yes, Hossa was down this yearto only 71 points, but this guy is an ELITE player. Samuelsson will be replaced almost immediately. Hudler will take some getting over, but Hossa is the better choice.

agreed

don’t forget Helm in that list though!

I'm not big on Samuelsson.

I seem to be in the minority on that one but I’m just not a big fan.

Having seen 5 games this year I am a BIG fan of Hossa. He is a beast. No question his signing is a good thing.

Losing Hudler would be too bad but it appears that the young guns like Helm and Abdelkader could (stress could) step up next year.

I’m not fond of Samuelsson either, so I don’t mind losing him. Although he has really stepped it up in the playoffs. But Hudler had a very good year this year and is only getting better. He has become a gritty player that gets under the other teams skin. Have you seen the way other teams take runs at him? Watch any of the games from the Blackhawks series.

Saying Hossa is an elite player is an overstatement. He is a good player, but he is not a great player. His two best stat years are 92 points and 100 points while with Atlanta. The Thrashers were obviously a horrible team that did not play defense, and the only real scorers they had were Hossa and Kovalchuck (and Kozlov kind of). Hossa is a decent player, but until he plays multiple games in a row with a hard effort, he’s not worth keeping on the payroll after this season. I want to see Chicago game 4 effort, every single game out of him. He is capable of doing that, but he hasn’t.

We’ll take Hossa off your hands if you don’t want him. Seriously, the guy’s a difference maker – so rare these days, and yet you have so many of them. Talk about an excess of riches.

As for Hudler – I’m very impressed with his game. But, don’t take this the wrong way, but, Hudler is a frequent diver. I like the Red Wings, and am impressed with how you turn out NHL players like they grow on trees, but Hudler as a player needs to mature a bit. He’s good enough not to dive like that.

I was just going to say

how cool it was to see Sean over here. Hopefully Ken Holland’s denial is just smoke and mirrors. I’d like to keep Hossa around.

More smoke

Just before the playoffs started Hossa said he wasn’t going to negotiate until after the playoffs
