Pens Strike Back, Top Wings In Game 3
The sweep? Not happening. A series again? Absolutely. Should you be surprised? Absolutely not.
In front of an emotionally charged crowd at Mellon Arena, the Pittsburgh Penguins dug deep and fought back to earn a 4-2 win in Game 3 of the Stanley Cup Finals. With the loss, the Detroit Red Wings have now lost 3 out of 4 Game 3's in the 2009 playoffs.
Both teams knew that establishing offense early on would be the key to Game 3, and it would be the Penguins who struck first, when Maxime Talbot scored from the high slot just 4:48 into the first period, staking the Pens to an early 1-0 lead. It wouldn't take long for the Wings to answer back, as Henrik Zetterberg would tie the game just over a minute later, slipping a rebound through the five-hole of Marc-Andre Fleury. The Wings looked poised to take control of the game only minutes later, when Zetterberg fed a cross-ice pass to Johan Franzen, who fired home a shot to give the Wings a 2-1 lead on the power play. But momentum would swing back to the Pens late in the third, when Kris Letang would capitalize with his own power play goal, beating Chris Osgood between his legs.
The Wings would come out slinging in the second period, amassing 14 shots to the four of Pittsburgh. But Fleury was up to the test, turning away 13 of the shots, and receiving some help from the right post on a Mikael Samuelsson attempt.
But in an eerily reminiscent fashion to Game 2, the Wings would be out-shot by the Pens in the third period by a total of 10-3. This time however, the Pens would capitalize as Sergei Gonchar used a Bill Guerin screen to beat Osgood to the glove side, giving the Pens a 3-2 lead that they wouldn't relinquish. Talbot would add an empty netter to round out the scoring.
Thoughts
This was destined to be a tough one from the get-go, and the Wings were completely aware of that. The Pens came out with a ton of fire, but the Wings did a nice job of weathering the storm and keeping themselves in the game. Mike Babcock had said he wanted to play a "simpler" game in Pittsburgh, but it looked as if the Wings were a bit hesitant at times, despite out-shooting the Penguins in the second period.
It's true that there were some questionable calls/non-calls during the game, but the Wings should have been ready for that, and been able to step up and respond. The PK haunted them again tonight, as the Pens capitalized on two power play opportunities. And for the second straight game, the Wings were completely dominated in shots in the third period, a trend that must be stopped if the Wings want to head back to Detroit with a 3-1 series lead on Thursday night.
Chris' Red Wing of the Game
Henrik Zetterberg
Hank got his tonight with a goal and an assist, but it wasn't enough to get the Wings on the doorstep of their 12th Stanley Cup.
Game 4 is Thursday night back at Mellon Arena in Pittsburgh. The puck drops at 8:00 PM and the game can be seen on Versus and CBC.

And another thing...
The Wings got away from what worked for them in Games 1 and 2: Getting bodies in front of the net. Yes, they outshot the Pens in the second period, but alot of those shots were from the outside, with no rebounds. It was alot like what they did in Game 3 of the Ducks series. Lots of shots, but not alot of traffic in front to cause problems for Fleury.
The Wings have to force Fleury into beating them. Lobbing shots at him with no traffic isn’t going to get it done.

I’m surprised too. I thought Hossa would really step it up since a lot of eyes are on him for this series. He’d better do somethin’ about it in Game 4!

2 goals in all the other game 4s, maybe he’s got one more in him?

As a Pens fan . . .
I am not that surprised because I watched him play every game post-deadline last season. He is extremely strong on the puck, a ruthless backchecker, and has a decent shot, but I watched him not finish on WAY too many prime scoring chances to consider him an elite goal scorer. Only reason he had 12 goals last playoffs was because he probably had about 40 great chances thanks to Crosby. Be happy with his Defensive play, and consider the odd goal or so an added bonus.

Pens Strike Back
Well, Ozzie was a little more human, Fleury was a little more NHL, the Wings were not as good on faceoffs, and the refs were a lot more homers. That’s about it, Pitts was better on the pp, and the refs gave them chances. The quality of refs is something the NHL should be alarmed at, I mean 6 skaters on the ice for 15 or so seconds and getting in front of players chasing puck and the silly holding definition, what are we watching?? Russian referees? My theory is the NHL wants that weekend finale telecast.
Just a note on Hossa. The other teams he was with, he was their top two or three players, on the Wings he looks ordinary. He does have puck control skills but equal to a handful of Wings. He does have size, and skating, we have a few equal to that. What someone needs to tell him is to quit hogging the puck, Pitts sees this and swarms him and he turns it over. His value, not as high as I thought, I think he understands the family team idea, but he has moved around is that because of greed?

a finale at the joe wouldn’t be all bad…I forget, did they close out Carolina on home ice? I know the 98 series against the Caps finished out in Washington, because I was at the Joe that night for the jumbotron broadcast (do they still call it JoeVision?), and last year was at the igloo…

Crap i need some aloe for that burn…i saw that coming.
Don’t count your chickens yet, Crosby hasn’t even been a factor in the series yet and Zetterberg looked a little winded at the end of the game after chasing him around for 3 games. They better find someone else to shadow him before Crosby goes off.

dude like i said before
I SAID this series is not over yet…if we win tomorrow it is though…and so what if he hasn’t been a factor…a lot of our better players haven’t done much either yet and pavel may be back soon lol

lol..."yet"
hahahah…hasn’t been a factor “YET” hahaha…oh man thats good stuff…“YET” …yeah Zetterberg looked so tired he decided to lead the series in scoring. They better find someone else? that should be hard, look at our bench man. It’s what we call DEPTH!! Cindy got SHUT-DOWN last year and this year looks no different. Watch out fellas Crosby’s bout to “go off” …we’ll have the tissues ready. Is that why they hand out all those white shirts, so Cindy has something to cry on? and way to miss TuLo’s point completely.

Wow guy, fly off the handle much, all i’m sayin is Zetterberg looked a little winded at the end there, maybe he was maybe he wasn’t all i’m saying is that Crosby will do something eventually, you can’t hold him down forever. Just like Hossa is due for something. You need to settle down a little, your all excited over nothing.
by JasonGoPens on Jun 3, 2009 11:18 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
fly off the handle? not really, what you said was very funny, I cyber-laughed. Just the typical thing I’d expect to hear from a pens fan, thats all. Can’t hold him down forever? ummm…see the finals last year? seemed like forever or until we raise the cup is long enough.
The true measure of a player can be made come playoff time. as we’ve seen so far. not all his fault for being so over-rated. would malkin be the same if he knew more english? least hes been able to get it done this years playoffs.

And it’s just like a wings fan with thier elitist attitude that no other team is worthy enough to win a cup…you may be surprised to see this not go your way this year.

We'll See!
The Pens played 6 on 5 for a long time with no call. We’ll see what happens. Better have your game on Pens. We’re Bringin it now. GO WINGS!!!

Do The Refs Want Wings To Lose?
What is with the refs? 6 on 5 and no call? I still think the wings will win? What does the refs and/or League have against us? Hossa does need to step up and start playing. He looks scared and tentative right now. GO WINGS!!!!
by Curtisro63 on Jun 3, 2009 1:01 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Of course it was a blatantly missed penalty, not sure how they missed it but where was your whole bench when this happened, they have mouths too, they could have alerted the ref that was standing 1 foot in front of them.
Hossa is scurred…

Their protests fell on the Refs deaf ears. Also Crosby hasn’t did any thing. But you’re right. Hossa hasn’t did anything either.

We don’t have Lidstron and Zetterberg shadowing hossas every move, he can do whatever he wants.

Well as expected it is a series
i predicted Wings in 7 before the series starts but i really wanted to finish it off quicker…oh well go out there and win Game 4….i felt we out played them especially in that 2nd period and somehow did not score….that was the the turning point among other things…but congrats pens.

Good game, guys. I’m glad my team won, but we’re still down, so no real big celebrations yet.
And how we got away with those 6 men on the ice, I’ll never know. You guys deserved a pp on that one.

Remember when?
As two teams playing each other(especially in the finals, AGAIN) we actually used to HATE eachother? What happened to a good, bloody rivalry? Is the RedWings vs. Colorado deathmatch the last of it’s kind? Whats with all this being nice and talking to eachothers blogs and stuff? I understand bad ref’s effect both teams and thats something to aggree on, but damn…this is HOCKEY, not to mention the STANLEY CUP FINALS!!!!! LET’S SEE THAT OLD TIME HOCKEY HATRED!! ..can hold hands in the summer.

Game 3 in a nutshell...
The Pens outplayed, outhustled and outcoached the Wings, especially in the 3rd period. Simple as that. I’m not going to blame the refs or Bettman for the alleged “conspiracy theory” I’ve seen many fellow Wings fans talk about. Lets go into game 4 and kick their ass like they did ours in game 3.
by JazzyBBP on Jun 3, 2009 11:33 AM CDT reply actions 0 recs
makes ya wonder
The Red Wings are waaay above blaming a ref for a game. and for the most part it wouldnt be a big enough factor to lose the game for ‘em anyways. It’s just the fact that tthese refs are supposed to be picked for these games based on merritt and experience. So far it’s been pretty amateur, at best. Their’s just no excuse for bad calls at this level or this many atleast. The refs are their to do a job, and do it well, like a cop…their shouldnt be any outside factors that make him make or not make a call, like whether the crowd reacts or not. For example…the kronwall hit, if it didnt “look” so vicious, then it would have been a different call. I just see it happening more and more. BOTH WAYS. I mean really, what gaurds are in place to actually prevent such a “conspiracy theory” it’s no secret the nhl needs more fans/viewers, so why not? I just really really dislike when a bad call effects the outcome of a game, no matter how big/small. or what team. What is to stop them from making bad calls?

Reffing
The referees were Paul Devorski and Dennis LaRue. Both of them are very well-respected referees. Bill McCreary, however, has a reputation as an away team’s ref (http://www.covers.com/pageLoader/pageLoader.aspx?page=/data/nhl/statistics/2008-2009/referee_regular_ats.html) and a “let ’em play” attitude. Normally, you’d expect fewer interference calls to hurt the Wings, but because they get handed out more evenly than equally (i.e. they tend give them to both teams, but not the team interfering more), and because we’re playing another skill-focused team, I think we’re better off with McCreary than Devorski for Game 4.
No true fan ever thinks their team is getting a fair shake. It’s important to remember, though, that for the most part, an NHL official’s peak possible performance is still well below the average fan’s expectations.
I think the Red Wings will win this series, because we’re better at playing hockey than they are. But not by such a wide margin. Lidstrom’s injury has made our Penalty Kill suspect. Draper’s has hurt our faceoff dominance. And the absence of Datsyuk, a better player than anyone in a Penguins uniform this year, cannot be overstated. If we’re looking for excuses — not that we need one in a 2-1 series that could easily be 3-0 — I’d go with injuries before putting too much stock in reffing.
