2009 NHL Entry Draft Open Thread
WIM will have an open thread available to all you draft-nuts who want to talk about prospects and who got picked by which team. Detroit won't make their selection until No. 29 in the opening round, but that doesn't mean we can't dissect the choices made by other teams until then!
I believe the Wings will either select Nick Leddy or Carl Klingberg, but we'll see how it actually pans out. Feel free to chime in with your prediction to get this thread going.
The draft will kick off tonight at 7 p.m. EDT on Versus. Tomorrow, you can follow along on NHL Network starting at 10 a.m. EDT.

The only time...
I have ever watched the NHL draft was the year Kronwall got selected, for some reason I just can’t watch it the same as the NFL or NBA. I guess too many people that I don’t know. It’ll be interesting to see who the Wings pick up beyond round 1.
Hedman 2nd to the Lightning
Boy do the Lightning need some defensive help and they may have gotten it
ya I like the two straight trips too haha
Yeah he looks like he’s going to be a solid player for the Lightning. Maybe they can finally get some more people around Lecavlier and St. Louis. Would have been great to see him in Motown but we would have had to give up A LOT.

Rumors swirling
About the Wings looking to unload Lebda and Meech in favor of more experienced defenders? any thoughts?
I wouldn’t mind a methodical Red Wing youth movement. Too bad Lidstrom can’t play forever. It all starts with him
Turning women into lesbians since 1991...
I remember when he was a rookie
didn’t think he’d make it 3 years. Too soft…..
glad he proved me wrong! Possibly the greatest defenseman in the history of the game
Turning women into lesbians since 1991...
i'd say modern hockey he's the best
the old game and the new one are so different. There was a year in which Bobby Orr had a +124 rating, that could never happen in the new NHL. But Nick is definitely #1 in modern era.

Sooooooooooo......
hear any good Micheal Jackson jokes today?
Turning women into lesbians since 1991...
Who did Colorado pick at 3?
I saw Kane went 4 to Atlanta….
I think I scared Christy off. I have that effect on the ladies…
Turning women into lesbians since 1991...
haha maybe watching Tigers game
Duchene is who they picked

and just kidding, Tigers aren't playing

so I did scare her off?
Think I’ll split so she can come back
Turning women into lesbians since 1991...
and then Braden Schenn
needed someone like that in LA around Kopitar and Brown

okay i'm not doing the others
pretty much Columbus gave the 16th and 77nd picks to the Isles for 2,3, and 4th round picks

Sorry guys.
I had some serious technological issues.
I’m at my family’s house up north. The internet went and then the TV did. I think I’m good now.
it's all good
you just missed a rambling speech by the Kings brass.

The first trade for just picks...
Columbus trades draft picks #16 and #77 in exchange for the Islanders’ #26, #37, #62, and #92.
on an unrelated note
Miggy just crushed a solo shot. The ball hasn’t landed yet and I type slow
Turning women into lesbians since 1991...
haha speaking of homers
Anyone heard about that kid Bryce Harper out of Las Vegas? Kid hit a 570 ft homer at age 15, smacked one 507 in Tropicana Field (hit the back wall) and went 12 for 12 in a game once with 11 homers and a double
by Casey Richey on Jun 26, 2009 7:14 PM CDT up reply actions
I hadn't heard about him until the SI cover.
But I’m not really a baseball girl (outside of the Tigers).
isn’t he the kid who’s dropping out of high school to play ball?

mayb
he’s probably going to get GED and then go to Junior College

Why does Dallas even have a team?
Contract the league to cities that actually have winter
Turning women into lesbians since 1991...
Hey.
At least Dallas has a good fan base. I can’t give them a hard time even though it is surprising that they’ve been successful but other warmer markets have struggled.
Good, bring him up to the big club
I hate goon hockey, but I also hate seeing the Wings get pushed around all the time. Once in a great while, ya just gotta whoop some butt
the rapper? Run-DMC?
isn’t he like Cheli’s age? Whats he gonna do, pop a cap in sumonez azz on da ice, yo?
haha i meant Darren McCarty but that would be a sweet add too

I know this is sacreligious to say here
but D-Mac is done. I’d rather have Downey at this point in their careers.
oh me too
But D-Mac is a better mentor and everything and that’s why they want to keep him down in GR to bring up the kids.

I feel bad that his stock fell tonight due to the injury.
But he should be good to go by the start of the NHL season.
best name thus far
Although i like the name Leddy for some reason

Predator take Ryan Ellis
Tiny D-man but we’ll see plenty of him i’m sure. as long as he doesn’t have fits like Shea Weber i’m cool
hmmm. he seems to have the Evgeni Malkin shootout move...
Blast it and see what happens
by Casey Richey on Jun 26, 2009 7:46 PM CDT up reply actions
Jim Nill really liked this kid.
If Ellis had been available, the Wings would’ve grabbed him but they did not expect him to be available so that’s why he freely talked about the kid.
does he have the speed to keep up with Helm? I have a good feeling about that kid, like he’s going to be special, not just Drapers successor
nobody has that speed haha
supposedly he is indeed the fastest skater in the league right now. Yeah he has some good hands and is a good faceoff guy, plus look at the hits he puts out
by Casey Richey on Jun 26, 2009 7:51 PM CDT up reply actions
cool side note
I watched games 5 and 6 of the Finals with a dude that played in Europe with Kovalchuk and the Sedin twins
haha maybe?
I thought his comment about the beers was funny

wonder how much a trip to Sweden would cost....
probably my tuition haha
by Casey Richey on Jun 26, 2009 8:08 PM CDT up reply actions
I'm trying to go & work it.
I’d have to pay my way, but if I can get the right flight it’d cost me ~$1000 for 4-5 days. I have a friend who can get me a great hotel deal there if I go with her. Haha.
thats not that bad really
that would be incredible to go to.

Anaheim takes Peter Holland.
A couple mock drafts thought Peter Holland might be a good fit with Detroit.
i hope Wing take a D-man or a big center
by Casey Richey on Jun 26, 2009 8:19 PM CDT up reply actions
I would say he wouldn’t start in the NHL but will be there off and on consistently. I think you’re better served letting him develop and actually play in the minors than sit on the bench with the occasional game of action in the pros
by Casey Richey on Jun 26, 2009 8:25 PM CDT up reply actions
sounds good
just wouldn’t mind seeing the future start. Maltby, Homer and Drapes are getting old, it’d be good to see the youngsters get a chance
yeah, i’d like to see Abdelkader get his time for sure but gotta love those 3 still
by Casey Richey on Jun 26, 2009 8:28 PM CDT up reply actions
Minny selects D Nick Leddy
and breaks our hearts and plans. Odd pick I think, they’re solid defensively and in net, couldn’t get squat done offensively at times.
true
then again this kid won’t start right away and the new GM will change things up for sure
by Casey Richey on Jun 26, 2009 8:26 PM CDT up reply actions
Let him drop
read a very interesting article on PPP. The Wings aren’t as good at drafting as the media says they are. I think it’s in the right sidebar. Great article.
The article did go on to say that the Wings are the best at player development, though
yeah read that while "At work" haha
good points made for sure. Draft is indeed such a crapshoot, in every sport really. Like I’m sure i’ll forget about half of last night’ NBA picks

"and the crowd goes wild!"
Take the hometown kid, probably will give them some much needed power on the offensive end
by Casey Richey on Jun 26, 2009 8:36 PM CDT up reply actions
Vancouver takes Jordan Schroeder.
Big addition to that offense. Maybe incentive for the Sedins to stay and Luo to stay. Interesting with Luongo announcing the pick haha.
haha forgot about that
saw it on the highlights last year
by Casey Richey on Jun 26, 2009 9:13 PM CDT up reply actions
by the way...
you take the Wings announcement since its your blog haha
by Casey Richey on Jun 26, 2009 9:18 PM CDT up reply actions
Caps take Marcus Johansson
Surprising they don’t take a defender really considering how porous it was last year
I think we're down to...
Nattinen and Klingberg for Detroit’s pick unless Carolina and Chicago take them.
Blackhawks, and Scotty Bowman, pick Dylan Olsen
One guy we could come to hate soon because of the team he’s going to.
whew
That doesn’t surprise me that they pick Simon Despres. they like to stockpile defenders it seems.

Pretty routine1st round
some teams made some great picks, others made head scratchers, lots of trades, Wings fans will have to wait.
Will you be around tomorrow?
I don’t know if I’ll be able to cover all day b/c I’m on a weekend vacation w/ the family.
just part of the day...going up to my dad's to help out
I’ll see what i can do. At the least i can post the Wings picks on the home page
