2009 NHL Entry Draft Open Thread

WIM will have an open thread available to all you draft-nuts who want to talk about prospects and who got picked by which team. Detroit won't make their selection until No. 29 in the opening round, but that doesn't mean we can't dissect the choices made by other teams until then!

I believe the Wings will either select Nick Leddy or Carl Klingberg, but we'll see how it actually pans out. Feel free to chime in with your prediction to get this thread going.

The draft will kick off tonight at 7 p.m. EDT on Versus. Tomorrow, you can follow along on NHL Network starting at 10 a.m. EDT.

The only time...

I have ever watched the NHL draft was the year Kronwall got selected, for some reason I just can’t watch it the same as the NFL or NBA. I guess too many people that I don’t know. It’ll be interesting to see who the Wings pick up beyond round 1.

I’m hoping for a punishing but skilled defenseman who will not be afraid to drop the gloves if he has too. Anyone fit that description? Lets clone Vlady

That was my thought!

Couldn’t be happier to see him in Philly!

Good

let him beat the crap out of Pittsburgh all year

Hedman 2nd to the Lightning

Boy do the Lightning need some defensive help and they may have gotten it

by Casey Richey on Jun 26, 2009 6:27 PM CDT reply actions

Would have loved to see him Detroit.

But I’d rather take two straight trips to the finals!

by Christy on Jun 26, 2009 6:30 PM CDT up reply actions

ya I like the two straight trips too haha

Yeah he looks like he’s going to be a solid player for the Lightning. Maybe they can finally get some more people around Lecavlier and St. Louis. Would have been great to see him in Motown but we would have had to give up A LOT.

Rumors swirling

About the Wings looking to unload Lebda and Meech in favor of more experienced defenders? any thoughts?

by Casey Richey on Jun 26, 2009 6:33 PM CDT reply actions

idk

who’s in GR right now that could step in on d?

I wouldn’t mind a methodical Red Wing youth movement. Too bad Lidstrom can’t play forever. It all starts with him

I remember when he was a rookie

didn’t think he’d make it 3 years. Too soft…..
glad he proved me wrong! Possibly the greatest defenseman in the history of the game

i'd say modern hockey he's the best

the old game and the new one are so different. There was a year in which Bobby Orr had a +124 rating, that could never happen in the new NHL. But Nick is definitely #1 in modern era.

Sooooooooooo......

hear any good Micheal Jackson jokes today?

Who did Colorado pick at 3?

I saw Kane went 4 to Atlanta….

I think I scared Christy off. I have that effect on the ladies…

okay i'm not doing the others

pretty much Columbus gave the 16th and 77nd picks to the Isles for 2,3, and 4th round picks

by Casey Richey on Jun 26, 2009 7:06 PM CDT up reply actions

Sorry guys.

I had some serious technological issues.

I’m at my family’s house up north. The internet went and then the TV did. I think I’m good now.

by Christy on Jun 26, 2009 7:04 PM CDT reply actions

it's all good

you just missed a rambling speech by the Kings brass.

by Casey Richey on Jun 26, 2009 7:05 PM CDT up reply actions

The first trade for just picks...

Columbus trades draft picks #16 and #77 in exchange for the Islanders’ #26, #37, #62, and #92.

by Christy on Jun 26, 2009 7:06 PM CDT reply actions

Toronto takes...

Nazem Kadri

He becomes the second London Knights player drafted tonight.

on an unrelated note

Miggy just crushed a solo shot. The ball hasn’t landed yet and I type slow

haha speaking of homers

Anyone heard about that kid Bryce Harper out of Las Vegas? Kid hit a 570 ft homer at age 15, smacked one 507 in Tropicana Field (hit the back wall) and went 12 for 12 in a game once with 11 homers and a double

by Casey Richey on Jun 26, 2009 7:14 PM CDT up reply actions

I hadn't heard about him until the SI cover.

But I’m not really a baseball girl (outside of the Tigers).

by Christy on Jun 26, 2009 7:16 PM CDT up reply actions

isn’t he the kid who’s dropping out of high school to play ball?

he’s probably going to get GED and then go to Junior College

Why does Dallas even have a team?

Contract the league to cities that actually have winter

Turning women into lesbians since 1991...

by JazzyBBP on Jun 26, 2009 7:23 PM CDT reply actions

Hey.

At least Dallas has a good fan base. I can’t give them a hard time even though it is surprising that they’ve been successful but other warmer markets have struggled.

by Christy on Jun 26, 2009 7:25 PM CDT up reply actions

Ya I know

the talent pool has been so diluted by expansion, just seems like axing a few teams and moving hockey back to where people care about the game is a better idea than the failing experiments in desert/arid places

by JazzyBBP on Jun 26, 2009 7:27 PM CDT up reply actions

now thats the kind of d-man I’d like to see the Wings pick!

by JazzyBBP on Jun 26, 2009 7:29 PM CDT up reply actions

Good, bring him up to the big club

I hate goon hockey, but I also hate seeing the Wings get pushed around all the time. Once in a great while, ya just gotta whoop some butt

by JazzyBBP on Jun 26, 2009 7:33 PM CDT up reply actions

the rapper? Run-DMC?

isn’t he like Cheli’s age? Whats he gonna do, pop a cap in sumonez azz on da ice, yo?

by JazzyBBP on Jun 26, 2009 7:37 PM CDT up reply actions

I know this is sacreligious to say here

but D-Mac is done. I’d rather have Downey at this point in their careers.

by JazzyBBP on Jun 26, 2009 7:39 PM CDT up reply actions

oh me too

But D-Mac is a better mentor and everything and that’s why they want to keep him down in GR to bring up the kids.

by Casey Richey on Jun 26, 2009 7:39 PM CDT up reply actions

Make him a minor league coach

his salary as a player would hurt the cap

by JazzyBBP on Jun 26, 2009 7:44 PM CDT up reply actions

What a name!

He’s arguably the fastest skater available in this year’s draft class.

by Christy on Jun 26, 2009 7:37 PM CDT up reply actions

best name thus far

Although i like the name Leddy for some reason

by Casey Richey on Jun 26, 2009 7:38 PM CDT up reply actions

Tiger update for you folks

Tigers 4 Astros 0. Polance just slugged one out

by JazzyBBP on Jun 26, 2009 7:40 PM CDT reply actions

Thanks for the update!

I was just about to go look so you read my mind.

by Christy on Jun 26, 2009 7:41 PM CDT up reply actions

OOOORRRR

maybe you think like me.
Be afraid, young one, be very afraid

by JazzyBBP on Jun 26, 2009 7:43 PM CDT up reply actions

Haha.

So I should be worried if that was true?

by Christy on Jun 26, 2009 7:46 PM CDT up reply actions

yeah but

you’re in college and seem to have your stuff together, so there is hope for you to turn out normal

by JazzyBBP on Jun 26, 2009 7:47 PM CDT up reply actions

lol they weren’t yet playing when I thought I scared off Christy

by JazzyBBP on Jun 26, 2009 7:45 PM CDT up reply actions

Predator take Ryan Ellis

Tiny D-man but we’ll see plenty of him i’m sure. as long as he doesn’t have fits like Shea Weber i’m cool

by Casey Richey on Jun 26, 2009 7:45 PM CDT reply actions

Jim Nill really liked this kid.

If Ellis had been available, the Wings would’ve grabbed him but they did not expect him to be available so that’s why he freely talked about the kid.

by Christy on Jun 26, 2009 7:47 PM CDT up reply actions

does he have the speed to keep up with Helm? I have a good feeling about that kid, like he’s going to be special, not just Drapers successor

by JazzyBBP on Jun 26, 2009 7:49 PM CDT up reply actions

nobody has that speed haha

supposedly he is indeed the fastest skater in the league right now. Yeah he has some good hands and is a good faceoff guy, plus look at the hits he puts out

by Casey Richey on Jun 26, 2009 7:51 PM CDT up reply actions

cool side note

I watched games 5 and 6 of the Finals with a dude that played in Europe with Kovalchuk and the Sedin twins

by Casey Richey on Jun 26, 2009 7:49 PM CDT reply actions

nice!

I went to high school with Aaron Wards wife. Does that count for anything?

by JazzyBBP on Jun 26, 2009 7:51 PM CDT up reply actions

haha maybe?

I thought his comment about the beers was funny

by Casey Richey on Jun 26, 2009 7:52 PM CDT up reply actions

Anaheim takes Peter Holland.

A couple mock drafts thought Peter Holland might be a good fit with Detroit.

by Christy on Jun 26, 2009 8:17 PM CDT reply actions

I would say he wouldn’t start in the NHL but will be there off and on consistently. I think you’re better served letting him develop and actually play in the minors than sit on the bench with the occasional game of action in the pros

by Casey Richey on Jun 26, 2009 8:25 PM CDT up reply actions

sounds good

just wouldn’t mind seeing the future start. Maltby, Homer and Drapes are getting old, it’d be good to see the youngsters get a chance

by JazzyBBP on Jun 26, 2009 8:27 PM CDT up reply actions

yeah, i’d like to see Abdelkader get his time for sure but gotta love those 3 still

by Casey Richey on Jun 26, 2009 8:28 PM CDT up reply actions

Homer and Drapes, yeah. I think it’s time for Maltby to retire

by JazzyBBP on Jun 26, 2009 8:32 PM CDT up reply actions

Agreed.

I believe the Wings plan on giving him another year in the AHL to develop and get the playing time he deserves to improve. He’ll be with Detroit full-time soon enough!

by Christy on Jun 26, 2009 8:26 PM CDT up reply actions

Minny selects D Nick Leddy

and breaks our hearts and plans. Odd pick I think, they’re solid defensively and in net, couldn’t get squat done offensively at times.

by Casey Richey on Jun 26, 2009 8:24 PM CDT reply actions

Yeah.

Why not Jordan Schroeder who was ranked above him and a forward? Hmm.

by Christy on Jun 26, 2009 8:25 PM CDT up reply actions

Good pick

he’ll get the offense started for them. Smart pick on Minnys part

by JazzyBBP on Jun 26, 2009 8:25 PM CDT up reply actions

true

then again this kid won’t start right away and the new GM will change things up for sure

by Casey Richey on Jun 26, 2009 8:26 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah.

He’s 3-4 years out.

by Christy on Jun 26, 2009 8:27 PM CDT up reply actions

Let him drop

read a very interesting article on PPP. The Wings aren’t as good at drafting as the media says they are. I think it’s in the right sidebar. Great article.
The article did go on to say that the Wings are the best at player development, though

by JazzyBBP on Jun 26, 2009 8:31 PM CDT up reply actions

yeah read that while "At work" haha

good points made for sure. Draft is indeed such a crapshoot, in every sport really. Like I’m sure i’ll forget about half of last night’ NBA picks

by Casey Richey on Jun 26, 2009 8:32 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah.

We’re better at late round picks I think, but haven’t had too much success with our earlier selections it seems…

by Christy on Jun 26, 2009 8:35 PM CDT up reply actions

Vancouver takes Jordan Schroeder.

Big addition to that offense. Maybe incentive for the Sedins to stay and Luo to stay. Interesting with Luongo announcing the pick haha.

by Casey Richey on Jun 26, 2009 9:09 PM CDT reply actions

Yeah.

Reminded me of when Ovechkin announced a Caps pick.

by Christy on Jun 26, 2009 9:11 PM CDT up reply actions

Caps take Marcus Johansson

Surprising they don’t take a defender really considering how porous it was last year

by Casey Richey on Jun 26, 2009 9:20 PM CDT reply actions

If they take Klingberg

I’m gonna be pissed.

They already took the Cup away from me.

by Christy on Jun 26, 2009 9:56 PM CDT reply actions

whew

That doesn’t surprise me that they pick Simon Despres. they like to stockpile defenders it seems.

by Casey Richey on Jun 26, 2009 9:59 PM CDT up reply actions

Pretty routine1st round

some teams made some great picks, others made head scratchers, lots of trades, Wings fans will have to wait.

by Casey Richey on Jun 26, 2009 9:59 PM CDT reply actions

Will you be around tomorrow?

I don’t know if I’ll be able to cover all day b/c I’m on a weekend vacation w/ the family.

by Christy on Jun 26, 2009 10:01 PM CDT up reply actions

just part of the day...going up to my dad's to help out

I’ll see what i can do. At the least i can post the Wings picks on the home page
