[Game Thread] Game 6: Wings @ Penguins
Detroit Red Wings at Pittsburgh Penguins, Jun 9, 2009 7:00 PM CDT
First off Wings fans, I want to say enjoy the game. If it's a win tonight, it will be the last time you'll see this line-up playing together because of all the free agents. So enjoy the game, and if it's a loss? We get to see them skate again on home ice. But I'm sure we'd all prefer a win right here, right now.
Keys to the game:
- Can the defense play as well as they did last game? If you're Chris Osgood you sure hope so. The Pens are going to "come out firing", "with their backs against the wall", whatever sports cliche you want to substitute in.
- Will Pavel Datsyuk have an effect? Gotta like the chances of this one being a yes after his performance in Game 5.
- How will Marc-Andre Fleury respond? All the weight of the hockey world rests on his shoulders at this point, but he can only do so much. The Penguins defense that had been so good throughout the series let him down big time in Detroit.
- Will Marian Hossa finally get on the scoreboard? All signs are pointing to "yes". But then again, they've been pointing to that for a long time now.
- Will history repeat itself? The Wings could capture their second straight Stanley Cup tonight and for the second straight time, on Pittsburgh's home ice.
As I said, enjoy the game because *hopefully* it will be the last time we see our guys on the ice together until next year.
JoeHass will be with you all for the In-game thread.

Win it for my brother!
It’s the kid’s anniversary today, how about a nice shiny cup for a present?
He’s actually out in Vegas (with the wife!) right now, just called me to see if there was any late injury news, cuz he wants to put down a bet on the Wings to take it down tonight :)
Hey all
I wont be here with you guy for this game because it might be the last time i get to watch hockey with my brothers before they move away.
GO WINGS though.
Won't be around
but obviously will be watching….Go Wings!
1 more win for back to back on the Pens and a repeat Go Wings!!!
Cheers to the Red Wings, guys.
I just want to thank you all for letting me invade the game threads during the Cup Finals and all the hospitality you guys have shown. I guess it makes it kinda easy when we are cheering for the same team, but as an outsider, I just wanted to show my appreciation.
I also need to thank your team for doing what mine could not, not only with what they have done so far this year but last year as well. Hockey’s integrity could have taken a huge dive if Pittsburgh had won the cup, but I am thankful that a deserving team that embodies two-way, hard nosed hockey was able to prevent the darkness that is Sidney Crysby and Pittsburgh from corrupting the sport we love so much. Lets hope Z and the rest of the Wings can finish the Penguins off tonight, again.
Good luck guys. Go Wings!
thanks broo
been a pleasure….lets go wings!

I'm working on a quick post right now
Anyone know how many times the Wings have won the Cup on the road??
I know we won it on the road in 98, 2008 obviously....
I thought I heard this would be the 4th time overall, but I’m not sure and can’t find it on the internet
Nope
Flyers were the higher seed, therefore game four was in Detroit.
In the grand scheme of things, the pain of life is not worth it.
97 and 2002 were closed out at the Joe, I asked the same question at some point over the past ten days….
and 2002 was also at home
higher seed then Carolina, won in five…..
In the grand scheme of things, the pain of life is not worth it.
SO PUMPED
A repeat would be heavenly…. lets hope we see the Cup tonight. GOOOOOOOOOO WIIIIIIINGS!!
In the grand scheme of things, the pain of life is not worth it.
Hoping for the best
19th birthday present ever!! Lets go red wings!

As I was here last year at this time, I wanted to make sure I was here tonight regardless of the Game 6 outcome… cheers to a great one from the Igloo! Will the Red Wings repeat as Stanley Cup champions? We shall see!
please please please win this, a game seven would not be good.
Lets get off to a good start, cant be to tentative.

Pittsburgh’s 4 for 13 on the power play in this series. Think that alone has kept them in it?

Even-strength goals per game:
G1: DET 3, PIT 1
G2: DET 3, PIT 0
G3: PIT 2, DET 1
G4: PIT 3, DET 2
G5: DET 2, PIT 0
Darn, if only Z could have gotten a hold of it earlier!
In the grand scheme of things, the pain of life is not worth it.
Datsyuk took too long to make that cross slot feed and Zetterberg couldn’t gather the puck quick enough to shot before Fleury got in position.
Shots: Pittsburgh 11-3
Zetterberg: 5:39, 8 shifts, 2 shot, 3 hits, 1 takeaway, 2/3 faceoffs
Kronwall: 6:45, 8 shifts, 1 hit
Cleary: 4:52, 8 shifts, 1 shot
Orprick interference no call of course

Terrible first period for us, lets come out stronger in the second!!!

Giveaways: Detroit 3, Pittsburgh 6

Penalties: Detroit 2/4, Pittsburgh 0/0

Error in Franzen Stats
Franzen’s +/- should read as 11, not 9. They didn’t give him +2 for Game 5.
Am I the only one who gives a shit?
Franzen had his bell rung...
…Osgood proceeds to call for a helmet repair, and they’ll take time to fix it.
Seriously
When those nitwits are shocked a call wasn’t made, you understand what idiots we are dealing with
Nice save by Ozzy
This is just complete garbage, what the hell are we doing?
In the grand scheme of things, the pain of life is not worth it.
Another horrible turnover by the Wings...
…turns into an awesome chance for the Pens that Osgood stops.
And Cooke should’ve been called for interference against Datsuyk.
Two penalties on the pens the last shift
HAHAHA f you refs! Keep it up!
In the grand scheme of things, the pain of life is not worth it.
Please stop whining about the refs.
C’mon guys. We’re better than that.
Or you could stop whining about people whining about refs.
Like shutup. when there is clear interference and slashes happening that are not called, people are going to frickin mention it.
In the grand scheme of things, the pain of life is not worth it.
Come On Bro
these are kind of blatant. I mean when someone leaves there feet and throws an elbow thats overboard
If we don't whine about the refs,
we’d have to give credit to the pens for playing good hockey. I’d rather whine about the ref’s
Are these two seriously the best refs the NHL has?
I hope not, maybe the others are sick?
In the grand scheme of things, the pain of life is not worth it.
WHO do we have to know
to buy a freakin penalty called on the pengys??

You have missed nothing but crap man, lucky you.

Only 7 registered shots on net for Detroit. Now I see why… plenty of blocked shots tonight by Pittsburgh.
Shots: Pittsburgh 21-9
Zetterberg: 11:35, 15 shifts, 3 shots, 2 hits, 1 takeaway, 4/7 faceoffs
Kronwall: 13:06, 15 shifts, 2 hits
Samuelsson: 6:54, 9 shifts, 1 shot, 2 hits
haha! no way! really?
u must have it on a different channel than I.. and i can’t reach the remote!
my buttons stick so: BEHOLD the MAJESTY of my effort!
Shots: Pittsburgh 21-10
Zetterberg: 11:35, 15 shifts, 3 shots, 2 hits, 1 takeaway, 4/7 faceoffs

Samuelsson: 7:07, 9 shifts, 1 shot, 2 hits
NHL would love game 7- you know how much money they make per game on advertising? They make BANK.

I've seen 3 legitimate penalties overlooked
…and then Zetty gets that RIDICULOUS penalty for being pushed into Fleury.
GO LIONS! RESTORE THE ROAR!
Come ON Detroit
Beat those girly Penguins.
Lopez wants it away, and it's hit deep to left center, Andruw Jones on the run, this one has a chance... home run!!, Mike Piazza!, and the Mets lead 3 to 2!!

Cleary: 10:33, 14 shifts, 3 shots
One thing I’m noticing in the last several minutes. What has worked for Detroit all season has been their puck possession. They’re masters at it when they get into a rhythm and it spells trouble for the opposition. If they do, they usually score eventually. We’ll see if that holds true or if Pittsburgh’s sound defense tonight keeps them at bay.
but
girly is so much more fun to say!
especially if you say it like ah-nold!

…they showed the replay of the Kennedy goal, and Lidstrom was tied up…should’ve been a penalty.
PIT PENALTY: Malkin (2-Cross Checking) 9:18
Detroit PP Playoffs: 23/93 (25%-4th in NHL)
Detroit PP Series: 4/19 (21%)
Pittsburgh PK Playoffs: 14/80 (83%-5th in NHL)
Finally. A freaken penalty call.
You hear that? If the Wings bench had not of cried out they wouldn’t have called it
Penalty!
Fiver? Nah. But a major would be nice.
I feel like its just one of those nights. You can do everything right and the puck just wont get in the damn net.
Well it depends on who wins
I find that a losing player winning it is pretty much retarded.

Damn, what a scramble on the Red Wings’ attempt to tie it here. Did one of the Penguins players cover the puck in the crease?

he makes BANK taking this to game 7. That’s why the officiating is so blatantly rigged
by JenLovesWings on Jun 9, 2009 9:41 PM CDT up reply actions
seriously
from game 1 onward, the officiating was skewed to MAKE it Det-Det-Pit-Pit-Det-Pit-(?), or at least “help” it get that way. The NHL makes a crapload of money—millions—from advertising revenue per game. Why let this be a 4 or 5 game series, when they could have 6 or 7 and a shitload more money, right? So that’s my conspiracy theory and I’m stickin’ to it.
by JenLovesWings on Jun 9, 2009 9:46 PM CDT up reply actions
I know totally two almost back-to-back PPs for the wings when they’re down late in the 3rd period, the refs were out to get the wings
Two late penalties doesn't make up for a dozen missed calls on the pens troll.
In the grand scheme of things, the pain of life is not worth it.
yeah, the refs ignored some OBVIOUS penalties in 1st & 2nd periods. Of course they can't give 'em ALL away but they came close.
that’s all I’m sayin’ NaFedaykin
by JenLovesWings on Jun 9, 2009 9:58 PM CDT up reply actions
Ya PPs right after you cut the lead and have momentum are worthless. rolls eyes
I’ll trade you two in the 1st for 2 in the 3rd
Can you point out where I said they were worthless?
No, you can’t because I didn’t say that.
In the grand scheme of things, the pain of life is not worth it.
ok sorry, actually you said the wings should have had 14 pp this game, but the two the pens had were obvious dives
uh..
Are you saying that I said that the Pens dived on the two penalties against the Wings? Not exactly sure, but if so, just point out where that it is because I don’t recall saying that.
In the grand scheme of things, the pain of life is not worth it.
Now we have to wait until friday and suffer through another game
We better win or I’m done watching.

We Need A PPG
But we didn’t get it tough luck LOVED how the wings only gave the puck up 6 times Hope this carry’s over
Also, Hossa can go to hell.
Pretty sure the Pens offered him his own cup ring and to sneak his name on the cup or something. Alls he has to do is play one good game (number seven) and we will win.
In the grand scheme of things, the pain of life is not worth it.
yeah
he’s a tool.
I love my Wings, but I do see why Pens fans hate his ass. He has no concept of team loyalty whatsoever
