[Game Thread] Game 6: Wings @ Penguins
Detroit Red Wings at Pittsburgh Penguins, Jun 9, 2009 7:00 PM CDT
First off Wings fans, I want to say enjoy the game. If it's a win tonight, it will be the last time you'll see this line-up playing together because of all the free agents. So enjoy the game, and if it's a loss? We get to see them skate again on home ice. But I'm sure we'd all prefer a win right here, right now.
Keys to the game:
- Can the defense play as well as they did last game? If you're Chris Osgood you sure hope so. The Pens are going to "come out firing", "with their backs against the wall", whatever sports cliche you want to substitute in.
- Will Pavel Datsyuk have an effect? Gotta like the chances of this one being a yes after his performance in Game 5.
- How will Marc-Andre Fleury respond? All the weight of the hockey world rests on his shoulders at this point, but he can only do so much. The Penguins defense that had been so good throughout the series let him down big time in Detroit.
- Will Marian Hossa finally get on the scoreboard? All signs are pointing to "yes". But then again, they've been pointing to that for a long time now.
- Will history repeat itself? The Wings could capture their second straight Stanley Cup tonight and for the second straight time, on Pittsburgh's home ice.
As I said, enjoy the game because *hopefully* it will be the last time we see our guys on the ice together until next year.
JoeHass will be with you all for the In-game thread.

Win it for my brother!
It’s the kid’s anniversary today, how about a nice shiny cup for a present?
He’s actually out in Vegas (with the wife!) right now, just called me to see if there was any late injury news, cuz he wants to put down a bet on the Wings to take it down tonight :)

Cheers to the Red Wings, guys.
I just want to thank you all for letting me invade the game threads during the Cup Finals and all the hospitality you guys have shown. I guess it makes it kinda easy when we are cheering for the same team, but as an outsider, I just wanted to show my appreciation.
I also need to thank your team for doing what mine could not, not only with what they have done so far this year but last year as well. Hockey’s integrity could have taken a huge dive if Pittsburgh had won the cup, but I am thankful that a deserving team that embodies two-way, hard nosed hockey was able to prevent the darkness that is Sidney Crysby and Pittsburgh from corrupting the sport we love so much. Lets hope Z and the rest of the Wings can finish the Penguins off tonight, again.
Good luck guys. Go Wings!

I'm working on a quick post right now
Anyone know how many times the Wings have won the Cup on the road??
by Detroit4lyfe on Jun 9, 2009 5:30 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
I know we won it on the road in 98, 2008 obviously....
I thought I heard this would be the 4th time overall, but I’m not sure and can’t find it on the internet
by Detroit4lyfe on Jun 9, 2009 5:35 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
The past 4 have all been won on the road
by JazzyBBP on Jun 9, 2009 5:42 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
That's not true
1997 was home. We haven’t won this one yet.
by Detroit4lyfe on Jun 9, 2009 5:44 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I think game 4 in ’97 was in Philly and the Wings swept that series
by JazzyBBP on Jun 9, 2009 5:46 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Nope
Flyers were the higher seed, therefore game four was in Detroit.

Did you get an answer?
by Detroit4lyfe on Jun 9, 2009 5:46 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
that was the answer, 1997 and 2002 finished at home, 2008 on the road, obviously, and I was at the Joe for Joevision when we closed out the Caps in 1998.

We ain’t famous and have unfortunatly been reduced to a cover band the past 5 years. Uuugh…time to go and practice. I wish the other bandmembers were hockey fans and would want to call off too. I sometimes feel I’m just wasting my time…. have a good one folks. GO WINGS!!!!!!

One thing I’m noticing in the last several minutes. What has worked for Detroit all season has been their puck possession. They’re masters at it when they get into a rhythm and it spells trouble for the opposition. If they do, they usually score eventually. We’ll see if that holds true or if Pittsburgh’s sound defense tonight keeps them at bay.

Cleary stoned on the breakaway by Fleury. That might have extended Pittsburgh’s season one final game.

Dog Pile on Fleury...
…and a great cover by him.
by joehass on Jun 9, 2009 9:37 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Damn, what a scramble on the Red Wings’ attempt to tie it here. Did one of the Penguins players cover the puck in the crease?
by cityhockeyfever on Jun 9, 2009 9:37 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
No…the replay was very clear it was Fleury.

We lost it with this game, we won’t win every game at home. the Penguins are cup champs.

Disagree…the Pens haven’t been able to figure out how to win at Detroit.

Babcock knows all about SCF series where the home team wins every game…he’s got this in check

Game over, we’re going to Game 7 on Friday night.
by cityhockeyfever on Jun 9, 2009 9:39 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
oh yeah he is
he makes BANK taking this to game 7. That’s why the officiating is so blatantly rigged

I'm Not A Conspiracy Kind Of Guy But...
I do belive this call me crazy
by EVeezy on Jun 9, 2009 9:43 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
seriously
from game 1 onward, the officiating was skewed to MAKE it Det-Det-Pit-Pit-Det-Pit-(?), or at least “help” it get that way. The NHL makes a crapload of money—millions—from advertising revenue per game. Why let this be a 4 or 5 game series, when they could have 6 or 7 and a shitload more money, right? So that’s my conspiracy theory and I’m stickin’ to it.

I know totally two almost back-to-back PPs for the wings when they’re down late in the 3rd period, the refs were out to get the wings
by NaFedaykin on Jun 9, 2009 9:50 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Two late penalties doesn't make up for a dozen missed calls on the pens troll.

by adamgreuel on Jun 9, 2009 9:54 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
yeah, the refs ignored some OBVIOUS penalties in 1st & 2nd periods. Of course they can't give 'em ALL away but they came close.
that’s all I’m sayin’ NaFedaykin
by JenLovesWings on Jun 9, 2009 9:58 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Ya PPs right after you cut the lead and have momentum are worthless. rolls eyes
I’ll trade you two in the 1st for 2 in the 3rd

Can you point out where I said they were worthless?
No, you can’t because I didn’t say that.

ok sorry, actually you said the wings should have had 14 pp this game, but the two the pens had were obvious dives
by NaFedaykin on Jun 10, 2009 10:51 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
uh..
Are you saying that I said that the Pens dived on the two penalties against the Wings? Not exactly sure, but if so, just point out where that it is because I don’t recall saying that.

We Need A PPG
But we didn’t get it tough luck LOVED how the wings only gave the puck up 6 times Hope this carry’s over

Also, Hossa can go to hell.
Pretty sure the Pens offered him his own cup ring and to sneak his name on the cup or something. Alls he has to do is play one good game (number seven) and we will win.
In the grand scheme of things, the pain of life is not worth it.

yeah
he’s a tool.
I love my Wings, but I do see why Pens fans hate his ass. He has no concept of team loyalty whatsoever
by JenLovesWings on Jun 9, 2009 9:44 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
They did that with Jaromir Jagr too in booing him every time he had the puck while with the Capitals and with the Rangers.
