Sundin in Detroit?
I've been reading a lot on forums and comments about rumors of Mats Sundin landing in Detroit. Would make sense that we would go back to this tactic. Put a former star craving a cup on a contender and see them give everything they can to win that cup. It worked in 08 with probably the best performance of Dallas Drake's career. The same thing happened in 2002 with Hull, Robatialle, and Hasek.

i doubt...
he’d be willing to take that serious of a paycut (about $8M last year i think). But then again, you never know

No one thought that people like Brett Hull or Luc Robataille or even Brian Rafalski would sign for what they would but they did. He’s made millions upon millions. Maybe he sees the Wings as his best chance to win a cup before he retires and I am sure our overabundance of Swedes isn’t a deterrent.

that would be interesting, but he didn’t play that well with Vancouver and he won’t be allowed to take his time (in my opinion) like he did last year. I think the Wings would require him to decide well before the regular season.

I'd welcome Sundin here...
But he’d have to take a serious paycut and I just don’t think that’s gonna happen. But who knows what’s up Holland’s sleeve and after the surprise of signing Hossa last year, you just never know.

That’s one thing that Holland has been able to do very well during his tenure with Detroit – get people to take less money to play with our organization. The 2002 Cup team was full of them. Hull, Hasek, Yzerman, Chelios, Robataille (I cannot spell that), etc. Right now there are a few too. Osgood is, as far as I am aware, the lowest paid veteran starting goalie in the league and has 3 cups to his name (2 as a starter) as well as being one game away from a 4th/3rd (not to mention a possible hall of famer). Hossa did it last year. Zetterberg and Franzen are both doing it right now. Lidstrom has done it his entire career. If Sundin wants to win (and at this point, I think all he wants is a cup), he’ll come to a team that would welcome him with open arms that has the chance to win a cup next season and forget about making $6 million (which is what he could be worth if he really wanted to sign with someone right now, possibly Edmonton).
Not to mention elder players do it all the time. Scott Neidemeyer has been doing it his entire tenure with the Ducks. Pronger was underpaid (his new contract is overpaid, however). Gary Roberts just did it. Gonchar as well. Mark Recchi has done it for a while. Shanahan has been doing it since he first resigned with the Wings way back when. When players reach the end of their careers and realize they have maybe one last chance to win the cup, they take way less money than they are worth.

There's alot of teams on his doorstep
It looks like there are a dozen teams interested in Sundin. Alot of them have more money to spend than us. For 6 million a year, there’s better bang for the buck anyways.

I was sure he signed a two year contract (first year prorated) with Vancouver for $10M per. Can anyone verify?

That was the original offer. 2 years, 10 per. He didn’t sign that though. Instead he signed a 1 year contract that was worth roughly $5M after it was prorated. So he is a free agent right now and the Canucks are unlikely to bring him back since he did little to provide the spark to his fellow countryman (the Sedin twins) that the Canucks were hoping for (From what I remember, they really only wanted him there to push them from all star status to potential super star status)

Nah
I prefer the semi-youth movement thats being implemented now. Save the remaining cap space for an injury signing or maybe take on a high-caliber player at the trade deadline.

Kind of a long shot
Not sayin it wouldnt happen, but does seem kind of a risk to use our remaining cap space on a gamble of sorts when we could save space for a later trade or move to get us 1 missing component whenever that time may present itself. Plus as others have said, the bit of youth upcoming we have I wouldnt mind exploring our Grand Rapids options first before diving into the free agency or trade pool….I mean after all we have to see how Howards going to handle the backup duties/possible starter role.

no way he would take that big a cut......but
Last I checked, Dandenault was still available. I think he would be a solid 3-4 line right winger, just like the old days, and he could easily be signed for what the wings have to spend. He still has some wheels, can and does hit, and could be good for 10 goals with the right linemates. also afinoganov could be a decent 3rd liner for the money

He’s really good defensively, too. Good idea to mull over, dude

like I said in my blog
sundin would be like another hossa…… the wings would be known as a team that players will join in order to win a cup and won’t. Everyone reminds us about hossa and I don’t care but the Wings don’t deserve a rep like that
Datsyuk is like Iverson....... Breaks ankles all the time!

Sundin is giant waste of money in my opinion…he was a slug for the leafs most years, and he didnt play good for the canucks last year either….he almost seems like a kovalev, hes not consistent enough…plus he’s old and slow..I would not be happy to see sundin wearing the red and white next year…he should just pack it in and head back to sweeden to live happily ever after….
afinogenov would be another bad signing! he’s a big under-achiever, and very injury prone…any team who signs him is taking huge risk, I see him signing in the KHL cuz hes not NHL material anymore
…sign Mike Grier, he would be a perfect fit with us, hes a big body two-way player…exactly what we need in hockeytown, another big power forward!! we all trust Ken Holland to do what is best for the Red Wings, he always has, apart from the bertuzzi trade a few years ago…not worth remembering that one eh..

yup
Mike Grier is the best option out there right now and he wants to come to detroit. Proof? How come his agent said that he has a bunch of offers but they are holding out for now? They are wating for the Hudler situation to clear so they can talk about low money and years. The hometown boy would fit perfectly here because of his size and skills. Jason williams wont come back here because we tarded him a few years ago I think…

Grier would be great
good fit I think, and he is from detroit, bring him home
by rc2id on Jul 24, 2009 7:51 AM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Good Fit
He would bring leadership, fit right in with the sweeds, and make up for some of the goals we lost by losing hossa, hudler, and sammuelson.
He needs to take a pay-cut though, if he wants to win the cup before he retires.
by GO WINGS on Jul 24, 2009 3:16 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Grier?
mike would be a good fit,and a few other players that can drop the gloves as well,he is not the greatest goaler, but what i see him bringing to a table,is proof that if crossed he wont back a way and leave with his head all jacked up,from lack of skill in the fight dept. this was a poor display in the coaching of last years play-offs,you dont put a forward in net,& you dont make lilia your tough guy.the team has 4 lines that can produce on any given nite, some depth for protection of asset players is a small sacrifice.

grier
dude i agree with you 100%. now that we got rid of downey and mccarty for some reason, i think we need a little balance of scorring and toughness. personalyy i thought moen would be good but holland doesnt understand that the red wings arent tough to play aginst and other teams (anehim) will continue to take advantage of us. we have enough eruopeans now we need some gritty canadian boys that arent afraid to drop the gloves and can handle them selves and not get knocked out. (lilja and kopectky)
