Darren Helm Injured in Camp

PrintElectrifying center Darren Helm will have to wait a bit to make his 2009-2010 season debut for Detroit. Helm suffered a sprain to the AC joint in his right shoulder after he tripped over a stick during a training camp session and slid into the boards.
MLive.com's Ansar Khan has the full scoop on the story, here's a quick bit from it:
General manager Ken Holland said Helm will miss the entire preseason and is doubtful for the season-opening games Oct. 2-3 against the St. Louis Blues in Stockholm, Sweden.
Is it an unfortunate injury? Yeah. Is it crippling? Heck no. Abdelkader will fill the role temporarily and it's a great opportunity to get him some playing time early in the season. When Helm's back healthy, he'll more than likely be put right back in the line-up.
As his rehab continues, we'll update you on this.

This is unfortunate but, as you said, Abdelkader will step in and Helm won’t be missed very much so early in the season.
This might actually be a stroke of good luck. Abdelkader will likely be floating between the Wings and the Griffins this season so him starting the season as a Wing and getting 5-10 minutes a night of true NHL experience can only help his development. Our second line is going to be him, Helm, and Leino in a few years so this is probably a good thing. Bad that Helm got injured but good that Abdelkader gets some good playing time.
I’m not so sure that they would put Abdelkader in there for Helm, unless more forwards come down with injuries.
Datsyuk, Zetterberg, Holmstrom, Franzen, Filppula, Leino, Cleary, Bertuzzi, Eaves, Draper, Maltby, and Williams.
That is 12 forwards right there. Unless they plan on scratching Maltby or Draper… which is entirely possible… I see Abby as the 13th forward. I’ve heard it countless times from Detroit coaches and management that the plan is for Abby to get big minutes in GR this season, rather than being a 13th forward for Detroit. They also have Derek Meech if they keep him on the team. All of the players I listed are experienced NHLers. It will be interesting to see who gets the minutes. We know Helm will play when healthy, so who of the 12 I listed sits? Of course that is barring any other injury. In the past Detroit has always dressed veterans over the young guys, but it wouldn’t surprise me to see Maltby and Draper sit a few. Babcock doesn’t play Maltby much anyways. Who would Abdelkader bump to the bench??
Some of the things I've read...
Indicate like you said Maltby being sat at times. My guess is Maltby, Draper, and Eaves will alternate healthy scratches to get some experience for Helm/Abdelkader. But with Babcock, you never know how the lines are gonna shake out really until it’s game time.
