Dan Cloutier Invited to Training Camp
Looks like Holland isn't all that sure with Howard as the backup after all. He's invited former Vancouver Canucks starter Dan Cloutier to training camp to try out for a full contract and to compete with Jimmy Howard to be Chris Osgood's backup.
Cloutier has a career GAA of 2.88 and a SV% of 89.9% as well as a career 139-142-33-4 record in 351 games played. He didn't play in the NHL last year. He also played a single game with the Vipers back in 2001.
Anyone else not liking this as much as myself?

Yeah, I don’t get this. The only thing I see is that it is more motivation for Jimmy Howard. I know one thing for sure, he isn’t anywhere near the goalie Chris Osgood is. Can you imagine the crap he would get as a goalie on the Wings. Cloutier is nowhere near as mentally tough as Osgood is. I would be very disappointed to see Cloutier as backup, even though I’m not that sold on Howard either. The Wings have better goalies in their system.

I agree with all of that but the Wings don’t have a goalie that is as ready as Howard is. Larsson and McCollum are probably more talented than Howard but neither are ready to be NHL goalies. I think we will have to survive with Howard for a season or two before those two are ready to take over. I expect both to get some playing time this year though. Maybe 1 or 2 games for each of them but some time is better than none.

i like this very much, Cloutier was a great goalie and brings us some insurance for the year. Howard is not ready yet for the NHL. Sign clouiter one year and Jimmy can play next year
Im like Steve Yzerman! No, not the leadership, goals, two way play or sportmanship..... Just the knee pain!

Cloutier himself is no longer ready for the NHL. He basically got chased out of Los Angeles.

Remember 2002 Playoffs?
Cloutier choked big time and the Wings knocked the Canucks out!

sheesh....
all along after we let conks go, i’ve stated that by the trade deadline, we’re going to have to land a solid tender to sub in for ozzy, one with actual NHL experience. obviously the weakest link in the wings’ armour, i was dismayed that holland didn’t pony-up to keep conks. let’s all hope that this weak link will become stronger, or this will be a very long year.

I also was kind of disappointed to hear that Conks wouldn’t be back. Was he too expensive?? He is a much better option than Cloutier.

holland & crew made the safe assumption that conks would get the offer he did, with the cap weighing down, it was the only move. too bad foresight couldn’t happen with the hudler situation, with those bucks holland could have sweetened conk’s deal. now with the uncertainty of lija’s career (concussion), those bucks could have gone as well. but hey, the could-haves, would-haves, & should-haves don’t amount to anything. let’s just hope the wings can get back to the Cup!
go wings!!

actually I heard from a source that cloutier asked about a invite and Hollad say sure. I mean if the guy does well, Why not? If he can’t perform, we only have Howard left. This is just a look and dont touch thingy. I just want Holland to see how Dan plays and then make a choice on our goaltending

Where did you read/see/hear that? Very few outlets have even reported that Cloutier will be at our camp.

Im not 100% sure, but I heard that on NHL.com. I don’t really see him playing next season though. I am putting everything on Ozzie, He said he knew what he was doing wrong, I beleive him.

Ozzy is only good for 50 games anyway and no back-to-backs. He might be able to do 55 this year with the two week Olympic break but you can’t expect anymore from him

Jordan Pearce...need I say more
I know im only going off of his Notre Dame days, but Pearce could definitely make some noise real quick in the pros…hell I mean he made Notre Dame good in college hockey….I hope Jimmys ready but if not I feel theyll give Larsson,McClollum, and Pearce all very serious looks very quickly or Kenny will make whatever move he can before its too late to get someone solid to backup Ozzie till one of the other 3 are ready to move into the NHL

Get Him Ready Quick
Let’s get him in game shape quick, we need a backup for Howard who is not an NHL quality and Osgood who won’t play.

We already released Cloutier. Told him that he wasn’t up to scratch anymore.
