Continuing the SB Nation Hockey game threads trying to raise money for Haiti, we're hosting Hockeytown for Haiti today during the game. The disaster is hard to summarize adequately other than absolute devastation and destruction to a nation that already had more than its share of problems. Join us in an effort to raise some money to go towards repairs and food for Haiti.
Please read the following before commenting:
How does this thread work?
- For ever comment (that is relevant and not just a letter) Winging It will donate $0.05 to Haiti Relief fund. Our cap is 7,000 comments right now. You do not have to pay to comment at all, commenting is free. The money comes from our pockets. If you would like to contribute, see below.
- We will be donating the money to the American Red Cross following the completion of the event.
- Spread the word of the thread to those that you think would be interested. The more comments the better.
- If you would like to donate, contact me by e-mail at mrnorristrophy[at]gmail[dot]com . No donation is too small and we appreciate everything that you can contribute as we try to help the people of Haiti recover from the destruction caused by the earthquake and the aftershocks.
- We have a PayPal set up so you don't have to worry about giving a stranger your personal finances.
- If you would prefer to donate to the Red Cross directly, you can do so here. If you donate directly, please let us know so we can have you on our list of donors and the thank you post.
- Play nice. We've got folks coming from Abel 2 Yzerman, some other Wings blogs, and PensBurgh has us linked so we're likely to have fans of both teams in here. I'd hope that you all respect each other given the situation and the cause for the thread.
- Enjoy the game. Too often we take sports too seriously and an event like that in Haiti is kind of an eye opener in terms of what's important.
We will open overflow game threads as necessary so if you feel things start to slow down on your thread, speak up.

I invited the Oilers and Vancouver commenters I was talking with last night
It’s a really early start for them, but maybe they can toss in a few nickels worth nearer the end of the game.

I invited a bunch of people too, even some Pens fans :)
So I hope we get a ton of commenters today. One comment here and there helps.
I'll be missing the game
but wanted to at least get out here and post something. I’ll try to drop in at the end too if I can.
LET’S GO RED WINGS!!
I hope 7000 comments comes quickly
Very cool of PensBurgh to help out.

i will be here at 1230 just stopping in right now to get my first comment in.

Hoping I can return to the thread when the game begins. It’ll be fun, and hopefully a good game! Thanks to all of you who have helped put this deal together.
Aint too Proud
The Pittsburgh third line versus our third defensive pair scares me the most. Staal and Cooke are very good forecheckers and Ericsson has been making all sorts of terrible mistakes lately.

Although I don’t like who I am hearing going to Calgary.

What I didn't get about Calgary...
is how they have been as bad as they are. To me, that’s more of a head scratched than the Detroit woes
can't score worth beans
It seems like their offense is Jarome Iginla and a bunch of grinder-guys wearing the same color shirts.

Wings are starting to warm up
Detroit was playing inconsistently for much of the first half of the season, and the injuries were definitely a huge hindrance. Now that they are getting healthy and most of their top players are getting a chance to establish some consistency and flow with the others they are starting to heat up. Howard can be a beast in net and I’m excited for the rest of the season. No one better sleep on the Wings. It happened to the Penguins last season and look what happened.
GO WINGS!!!
agreed, i was thinking that hopefully we can pull a turnaround like they did.

TSN has the update
Phaneuf, Sjostrom and Auley to Toronto for Hagman, Stajan, Mayers and White
Still think Toronto overpaid. Sjostrom has been disappointing. Auley is an unknown for me.

by Casey Richey on Jan 31, 2010 11:12 AM CST up reply actions
he's sure been playing like it
But the question is does he keep it up? Goaltending seems to be so weird – a guy will come out of nowhere, seem to be excelelnt and solid, and then in a few more years return to obscurity.
"While there's life, there's hope." --Cicero
Hey everyone
This is a great idea for a good cause, and hopefully it’ll be a great day for the Wings! Although, I was really hoping we’d have Holmstrom back for this one
You and a lot of other Wings fans. But better to have him healthy and back permanently than get hurt again, I guess.
that's my thinking
With as much abuse as Homer takes, he can’t afford to start dinged up any more than necessary.
"While there's life, there's hope." --Cicero
Agreed
Having Homer back would have been great. Cleary on the 2nd line would help balance out their 2nd line scoring threat. Hopefully J-Will is up to the task
by J.J. from Kansas on Jan 31, 2010 11:08 AM CST up reply actions
I concur
Holmstrom is definitely a catalyst for Detroit, but he does need to be healthy for his job.
I personally think he has as critical of a job as Detroit’s goalie, at least when are are talking about the last few years. Come playoff time his type of play makes all the difference. Its nice to see other Wings picking up on Homer’s tendencies. It certainly doesn’t hurt to have a few players willing to get their noses dirty. Franzen plays the same way and his absence highlights that change in Detroit’s game .

This improves Toronto’s defense immensely, but their scoring depth takes a hit.

Oilers shouldn’t trade Souray anyway.
by J.J. from Kansas on Jan 31, 2010 11:27 AM CST up reply actions
the problem as I get it from Oiler fans
Is that his contract is huge, like Visnovsky’s, but because of his talent he might actually be tradeable, unlike a lot of their overpaid grinders. They have no confidence that the Oiler ownership will actually bury them in the minors or cut useless guys like Moreau.
"While there's life, there's hope." --Cicero
Generally you shouldn’t trade away a huge contract if the guy is worth it. Souray’s slap shot scares the hell out of me

Unbelievable
Leafs getting away with robbery today. It feels like NHL 10 trades where some 12 year old trades their crap for other teams “stars” (loosely used for Phaneuf, but still). Getting Giguere AND a 1st for Toskala is just that one that makes you say “how is this even fun for you?”
Deals like this...

The only way to move a player with a bad contract is to accept one in return. From there it’s a hockey trade: TO gets a good goalie who was slowly turning to rust on Anaheim’s bench but who was untradeable due to his contract; ANA gets help up front of a guy who would normally be considered untradeable due to his bad contract.

From what I understand, it was one of the few ways they could legitimately limit the number of minutes he played, kind of like limiting the number of innings thrown for a pitcher when they’re young. Plus, they didn’t really need him to do it.
Now that he’s maturing into a more capable defensive player, his presence (I think, without data I don’t really know) likely cuts down on the number of shots from the point. If he gets loose after one of those, it’s over.
Great fundraising idea!
Hope you raise lots of funds for Haiti.
