Morning Skate: ...consider me Miles Davis
Since this is only the third one of these we've done, I'll go over the new style for those that may have missed it. We're switching the morning skate to serve mainly as a pre-game thread for you to discuss different topics about the game and around the NHL as well. We've also tossed in a little extra fun with a prediction game to for player of the game as well as the final score of the game.
Detroit's had some time off after beating the Avalanche 3-1 on Saturday but get a tough St. Louis team tonight. Can the Wings step it up at home and continue winning or will St. Louis get back on track?
St. Louis Game Time is your SB Nation affiliate for the St. Louis Blues.
More after the jump.
- Jimmy Howard will start in net tonight for Detroit. He had a strong out against Colorado, stopping 21 of 22. He'll be facing a St. Louis team that averages about the same number of shots per game as Colorado does (32 or so). How will he fare in tonight's game against the Blues?
- I'm recycling this from yesterday: Jaroslav Halak gave up six goals last night against the Avalanche. Halak has dropped three straight starts after ripping off six straight wins before that. He's allowed twice as many goals in those three losses than he did in those six wins. Is this good news for the Wings or is Halak in position (if he starts) to have a monster performance and stop like 72 shots?
- TJ Oshie is out with a fractured ankle and the Blues are facing some injury problems:
. - Can the power play get anything going soon? The units have been pretty middle of the road and Babcock hasn't been too happy with that. Don't make him angry, you won't like him when he's angry. Hopefully, as Rafalski gets back into his routine, the power play will pick up with it.
- Looks like Jiri Hudler will stay with Valtteri Filppula and Johan Franzen. This means Todd Bertuzzi will be down on the third line again with Dan Cleary. With the way Cleary is scoring and Bert is passing, I like this combo. Is the mix and match with the second/third line something that will continue to work or is it something that needs to be figured and left alone?
- St. Louis lost 6-3 against Colorado the last time they took the ice. Despite three straight losses, the Blues are still a very dangerous team. Which version shows up tonight?
- Nashville lost to Toronto 5-4 last night. Former Detroit defenseman and future Hall of Famer went -2 in the game. Clarke MacArthur had 3 assists but was a -4. How does that happen you ask? Well, when all three of your assists come with your team on the power play.
- Selection time! Player of the game: Jimmy Howard. I think he'll have a great game and with Halak at the other end, he'll need to have a great game.
- Score: Wings win 2-1 in a very tight game. This will be the second biggest test of the season for the Wings and it should be pretty competitive against the rival Blues.

Player of the game:
Dan Cleary. The guy is a beast right now. He seems to have a break-away or two every game while on the PK.

5-3 Wings
Henrik Zetterberg as player of the game.
I think at least two of the goals come on the power play and that, by the end of the night, nobody is blaming Halak for anything.

Gotta go with Bertuzzi on this one
I’ll say a 5-2 victory for the Wings. While yes, the Blues may take about the same amount of shots as the Avalance, they score a whole one goal per game less than the Avs. 2nd worst in goals/game in the conference slightly ahead of the Wild. 5th worst in the league behind the Devils, Islanders, and Maple Leafs. Their crazy low GAA was the only reason for their great start. Seems as though the GAA is on the rise and the GFA is the same… that only means one thing… The losses will pile up very quickly.
The old saying is that defense wins championships, but in this league… if you don’t have an offense to go with it… you won’t win.
nice stat work
You gotta wonder how much of this team’s success hinges on Halak keeping things low enough to where the scorers can get 2 or 3 goals at the minimum to win it. They’ve scored 3 or more goals in 4 of their wins and have scored 2 or fewer in 5 of their wins (including 1 OT and 1 SO)

Not buying it...
You gotta wonder how much of this team’s success hinges on Halak keeping things low enough to where the scorers can get 2 or 3 goals at the minimum to win it.
Watching Montreal and Halak’s run to the conference finals this past spring, followed by Halak’s play in the early going here, one thing struck me: Halak is able to flourish under a certain set of conditions. When those conditions are altered, he falters.
Halak’s success is predicated on a dedicated team defense that forces the shooters to the margins. Montreal was able to keep teams like Washington and Pittsburgh (two teams with skilled players, no doubt) to the edges. While he’d face a lot of shots, he had good sight lines and reduced traffic in front. When he came up against a team like Philadelphia who have Holmstrom-esque players (e.g. Hartnell, Giroux, Powe) driving to the net, he struggled.
I was fortunate to attend the Blues weekend tilts against Chicago and Pittsburgh last month, and it was the same story in those two big victories. The St. Louis D, spearheaded by Oshie-Perron-Backes kept everything to the outside, didn’t allow a lot of second chances, and kept traffic out front to a minimum.
St. Louis is currently at a loss without Oshie, Perron, Jackman, Polak…as such they are not as sound defensively, and it’s making life easier on the opposition to move play between the circles, clutter things up, and eliminate Halak’s sight lines.
While I appreciate the analysis, I don’t know that it tells the whole story. The low GAA is a product of the team being able to play a certain style in front of the goaltender who REQUIRES that style to shine. Remember last year when the puck possession of Detroit turned to dump-and-chase when the team was riddled with injuries, St. Louis is suffering similarly in that injuries are precluding them from successfully implementing their defensive scheme.
by LeftWingLocked on Nov 17, 2010 9:23 AM CST up reply actions
you’ve got an excellent point. The Canadiens kept the Caps/Pens to the outside for the most part but when they messed with his bread and butter he was left scrambling for help. Based on that, the Circus Line could be in for a big showing as well as Franzen or Bertuzzi.
I do think a lot of St. Louis’ gameplan does hinge on the goaltending though; last year and this year their gf/ga differential is so low that that they need their goalie to keep them in because they aren’t scoring all that many goals.
by Casey Richey on Nov 17, 2010 9:31 AM CST up reply actions
Agreed. I think the Circus will be particularly dangerous, and the Belle Tire Power Play will be stout. Let’s not forget that in their past two games, St. Louis has given up 11 goals, 4 of which were PP tallies.

Perceptions of the Blues...
Interesting that while the Blues have been backsliding lately, they’re perceived to be a major threat in the Central Division (to whit: This will be the second biggest test of the season for the Wings and it should be pretty competitive against the rival Blues. Their last impressive string was playing sound defensive hockey and taking two at home against Chicago and Pittsburgh. Yet a look at the standings reveal that Chicago and Pittsburgh are nothing more than middle of the pack .500 teams (at best). At full strength, the Blues were able to beat these teams with a commitment to team defense (and it was Halaktoberfest, after all). So what’s changed?
In the early going, Oshie-Perron-Backes were carrying that teams at both ends of the ice. They back-checked like mad, cycled well in the offensive zone, and were able to match-up well with the opposition’s top lines. With 2/3 of that line out, the #1 offensive unit becomes Boyes-McDonald-Backes. 2/3 of THAT line have never been known for their defensive prowess, and Backes can’t really do it on his own. Couple that with the injuries to two of their top 4 defensemen, and St, Louis is a decidedly different team in their own zone, perhaps explaining their doldrums at the season quarter-post.
Predictions, you say? 5-1 Detroit, Lidstrom player of the game. With Oshie, Jackman, and Polak out, the St. Louis PK gets exposed and Lidstrom dents the twine twice: once through a screen, and once via Holmstrom’s stick.
Good Analysis
Nail on the proverbial head, you got it. But the Wings got to go out and play like they can.
Im going to go
with 4-2 wings. St louis hungry to get back on track. Goals coming from Franzen, Pav, fil and one from the grinders… I just cant decide which one. Injury plagued or not I think the blues will keep it tight on the scoreboard, just not on shots or faceoffs. I live closer to st louis now and I go just about every time the wings are around, and Ive seen them play the blues twice at the joe.. everytime its been decided by 1 or 2 goals.
Thoughts?
I haven’t seen starting lineups for the Blues yet, but does anyone think there’s a chance Conklin gets the start tonight? He had a shutout against the Wings last year and with the way Halak has been playing lately, I could see Payne switching things up and giving Halak a rest.
Like to keep your communication short and to the point? Follow me on Twitter
Yeah I haven’t seen a starter listed yet but wouldn’t be surprised because of the things you’ve mentioned above. Either goalie is a solid choice.

Division rivals...
As this is an inter-division game, I would expect to see Halak get the nod. Despite Conklin’s shutout last season, his most recent outing was a loss to Phoenix in which he allowed 4 goals on 26 shots. I’m inclined to believe St. Louis will face a hell of a lot more rubber tonight. Halak gives them the best chance to win, and in the uber-competitive Central Division, those points are very important. I’d be surprised to see Conklin in net…but stranger things have happened.

Tonight is the team you are battling with for a division title…you have to have your best players on the ice. I would be shocked if they started Conklin (no offense to him, but Halak is a better goalie)

I think the Red Wings will make a statement tonight. The Blues offense is average at best and I think the Wings put on a defensive clinic tonight. Jimmy is solid for the shutout

The Blues are a very good defensive team, while I would love to see the wings go all Columbus on them, I doubt that would happen tonight

I saw Babs the other day and he had no answer for the power play other than they need to start clicking. -three straight western conference finals
-through a year where at one point we had ten regulars out of the lineup, and still finished with over 100pts and 5th in the conference
-currently coaching us to an 11-3-1 record…
but since the power play has struggled, we should fire his ass…

Filppula Wings 5-2
The score is hoping Halek craps the bed again. And my Filpulla perdiction is far fetched for me. As I scream at him more than anyone due to last years play in which he showed me he was loads of talent and hands wrapped in a 1 ply piece of toilet paper. Every time he is touched he gets dropped. Now I have happy to yell at and think fil is stepping up. Tonights Fils night.

Flip can lay some hits of his own though, he’s not soft by any means.

Flip best improved
The mgt was right about this guy, the older he gets the better he will be. Still young, still improving, the more grown up confidence and leadership he achieves the better he will be. He has the ability to be better than Datsuyk, but we will see
I don’t think fil is soft…I’m not blatantly trying to rip on him…I just think when he isn’t able to walk somebody and he does get pressured he seems to lose the puck more often. He needs to be stronger with the puck…keeping his body between the d and himself. He is getting better this season….that’s why he gets my vote tonight.

holmstrom
I think that the Blues injury problems will leave Homer’s office free for him to do his thing. He will be able to distrupt Halak, and pick up easy rebounds and deflections.
3-2 Franzen
I think we come out slow, get down 1 or 2 goals. The mule has been in the barn lately, I think he gets out and scores a couple of goals. We all know when he scores he likes to do it more then once.
Wings in a cakewalk! 5-1
If the Wings shut down the only line Backes-Boyes-McD
If Halak wears his holy underwear and sees rubber while he sleeps
Then the Wings should win mo problem.
Lets face facts, on paper the Wings should take them apart, they are injured and have been shellacked lately. But, the Wings must show up and perform, but why would they take a night off? it’s a home game. Even if Halak stands on his head, 60 minutes of offense should negate that and our goalie Jimmy is better.
12-1 Wings
But that would completely ignore the fact that the Blues were 4-1-1 against the Red Wings last season despite the fact that the Blues have “been not-so-great for such a long time, it seems like, it’s strange to be considering them an actual threat.”

What was their record against the rest of the league? It would seem like the Blues had the Wings’ number last year; but wouldn’t you trade that record for a playoff berth?
Also, regardless of head-to-head record, it’s not a stretch for any NHL fan to say that the Blues have been “not-so-great” for the last few years, minus the one insanely hot stretch they went on in the 2nd half of 2009 to get in the playoffs. They haven’t contended for the division crown in a decade, and have struggled to make the playoffs the last few years.

I'll just reply to myself to answer the comments
I’m not trolling around. I just think it’s funny everyone was picking the Wings to win after the Blues played really well against Detroit last season. My way of pointing that out. And for the record, I do think this place has gotten more interesting since the change in ownership.
And I think there’s a potential for a real rivalry between the Blues and Wings with the team maturing for St. Louis. Speaking for fans in St. Louis, we have thought of the Wings as primary rivals since the playoff battles of the 1990s, but a lot of Wingnuts look down their noses at us. That’s fine. Feels better when our team wins that way, like the four out of six times it happened last year. Stanley Cup Stanley Cup Stanley Cup. I know. I know. I know.
Detroit had the 1980s to forget, we have much of the last decade to forget.
www.stlouisgametime.com
This is the third game we’ve done the pre-game predictions and so far nobody has picked Detroit to lose. I don’t think it will happen until somebody actually does lose and we’re all comfortable in the knowledge that our pregame predictions are not, in fact, what’s making Detroit win games.
Also, you gotta admit that the Blues in their last four games haven’t really looked like the world-beaters from earlier, combined with how well Detroit has played this season so far and the matchup on paper at least looks favorable. We really can’t (or more to the point, won’t) base things off last year because, man, fuck last year hard with a knife that sucked.
I do know that quite a few Wings fans here and elsewhere on the net have been talking about how it’s actually exciting to see if the Blues can start putting it together and be a real competitor because it would be nice for the sake of interesting division rivalries. Personally, I’d like to have 24 games on our schedule against cupcake chumps so we’re still good for the playoffs, but I can’t say the Blues being good again consistently would be a horrible thing.

Being in Kansas (K.C. Area)
Most of my hockey-going experiences have been in St. Louis. I’ve always been treated fairly well and have always found some knowledgeable fans. For instance, the guys sitting behind me at the game I went to last year when the crowd started chanting “OSGOOOD” while Jimmy Howard was in net felt particular shame. They also had some pretty funny stuff to say about Barrett Jackman. (Wings won that game in a shootout after the Blues jumped to an early lead). I’ve also met my fair share of jackass retards (which I’m sure you’ll find at any arena across the country). As far as looking down my nose in-person? By the end of the night, I could barely see down my nose.
Chief is gonna be Chief. I have a ton of respect for the guy, but I understand how he’s likely not popular in your neck of the internet.

But for every dumbshit moron that makes some retarded comment to me that “the Wings buy their team” (heard 2 years ago at the UC) or “Yzerman may have 2 Cups, but he’s still a choker” (heard 10 years ago at MLG), I meet 3 good, rational, intelligent fans who can discuss the game despite their biases.
And I’ll say this about Blues fans – you’re a hell of a lot nicer to deal with than those idiot Blackhawk fans. Fuck me, I can’t stand them.

That was more articulate. Its always nice to have a healthy rivalry within the division. A great hockey game between two good teams (with the blues on the surge, barring the last three debacles..of course) is fun to watch. Frankly, on a wings blog you don’t expect someone to pick 6-2 blues? do ya
Nevertheless good luck to both teams and lets hope for a good hockey game
I celebrate Festivus!!!
Just to second JJ
Yeah if we were playing like the oilers (even though I would love my team to win) the odds are I would have picked them to lose.
I celebrate Festivus!!!
And Colorado had gone 7-2 or something in the last 9 meetings and the Wings handled them pretty easily. Last year’s head to head means little to nothing this year. Also, why shouldn’t we have confidence in our team? They play well enough to make us believe they can win every game.
hey don't blame me
I picked Wings 12-1. And it won’t be as close as the score indicates.
www.stlouisgametime.com
We know
As JJ said, there hasn’t been a person yet to pick against the Wings, although I almost did today just to see what the reaction would be. If you’ll notice, the majority of the “predictions” are for a close game, including a few in OT.
It’s nice to see the Blues back to being respectable, because there were some great playoff battles in the ’90s and a really competitive division makes the season a hell of a lot more interesting.
Oh, and don’t feel so special about the way Wing fans look down on the Blues: we think we’re superior to everyone, not just your team.

You think that's bad?
I’ll have it blacked out on Center Ice because I’m in Fox Sports Midwest’s coverage zone and I have to pray that no Big 12 teams are playing any kind of sport tonight, including club badminton, otherwise my local carrier will show that instead of the St. Louis feed.
(post-script: I checked and it seems I’ll at least get to watch the game)
(post-post-script) the bright side is that this guarantees I’ll see it in high-def)

a local bar to watch it, they’ll probably be showing pistons-lakers game
Are you in Kan? Or more like KC?
Just curious. Many family members that way. And when FSMidwest in KC showed a Big 12 football game first Saturday of the month instead of hockey DESPITE THE GUIDE SAYING IT WAS HOCKEY while I was there visiting made me a little crabby.

Kansas City area
On the Kansas side, but only about 45 minutes from downtown KC. I hate that FSMidwest blankets the whole region like this, and have sent angry emails to everybody each year that I’ve had to go online to see a Blues/Wings game thanks to their broadcast decisions.

Oh that Darren Pang
What a homer he is….. he sure shut the f*** up when the Wings put up those 4 in the 3rd.
Uh....
Between work and other commitments, I’ve been unable to really keep up with that every week. However, I’m thinking of making it every other week so I can have a nice amount of material to work with. Here’s my high-level overview of the division to date:
Everyone sucks but the Wings.
