by MajesticY on Nov 21, 2010 5:58 PM CST reply actions

Anyone ever been to a devils game?

I am presenting a paper at a conference in new york and wanted to take in a game when I was there. Worth the ticket price?

by Kjell on Nov 21, 2010 5:58 PM CST reply actions

No

And here’s why: it’s no easy feat getting there. I live in New York, so I’m happy to go into greater depth if you like.

by Michael Petrella on Nov 21, 2010 5:58 PM CST up reply actions

Well I am going to be by NYU, don't know if that makes a difference?

Also I am from Montana and am not good in big towns, (Make all the jokes you want) So how bad are we talking?

by Kjell on Nov 21, 2010 6:00 PM CST up reply actions

It's not DIFFICULT... it's just time consuming.

Essentially, the Devils play in Newark, and the arena is NEAR a NJ Transit station. You can take a train to the stop which is then only a few blocks to the rink. That said, those few blocks are in Newark, so… buyer beware.

New York doesn’t make it easy to LEAVE New York, even though you’re just going to Jersey, which is like a suburb.

I say if you’ve got a night to kill and have no desire to check out Manhattan, go for it…it’s a super nice arena, with some cool features. But also, lots of people from New Jersey are there. And they’re every bit as annoying as you think they are.

by Michael Petrella on Nov 21, 2010 6:02 PM CST up reply actions

I am the only one I really know who is going to the conference

So I am up for anything? What else would be good for a lone person to do in NY?

by Kjell on Nov 21, 2010 6:04 PM CST up reply actions

NY has everything

Just need to know where to look

Go for it

by DetroitSports on Nov 21, 2010 6:05 PM CST up reply actions

That is what I hear.

Wondering how fun it would be to do by oneself though? I am not big into touristy stuff.

by Kjell on Nov 21, 2010 6:06 PM CST up reply actions

I only went there once

And that was with a pretty big group, so everything I did was with 7-9 others

Go for it

by DetroitSports on Nov 21, 2010 6:08 PM CST up reply actions

Going to the bathroom must have been awkward.

by J.J. from Kansas on Nov 21, 2010 6:08 PM CST up reply actions

When will you be in town?

If the Rangers are out of your price range, there are lots of things a visitor can do. And depending on the time of year/day, I can meet up for a beer and/or catch a game at a bar.

Let me know what you’re into and I can give you a fairly comprehensive list.

by Michael Petrella on Nov 21, 2010 6:05 PM CST up reply actions

I might take you up on that.

If this schedule doesn’t change I will be there Feb 22 to the 25th. I have two nights free from the looks of it. Although I will know more after Thanksgiving break when the confernce board judging thingy is all set up.

by Kjell on Nov 21, 2010 6:07 PM CST up reply actions

"Confernce* board judging thingy is all set up"

Holy shit, I am presenting a paper about Ecological Differentiation and that is how I talk?

Spelling mistake deliberately copied.

by Kjell on Nov 21, 2010 6:09 PM CST up reply actions

It’s a fairly unpleasant time to be in New York because you’re expected to walk everywhere and it gets chilly, but it’s not a big deal — particularly for us folks from Michigan (and, I assume, Montana).

My absolute favorite thing in/near the city is Ellis Island.

But, yeah, just let me know. Happy to meet up for some pops, as Mickey would say, bring some hockey fans and watch a game.

by Michael Petrella on Nov 21, 2010 6:10 PM CST up reply actions

Sounds good.

I am looking out my window at a termoeter that says -15 right now and am excited to go skiing in the morning so the cold won’t bother me. Ahh fuck they score.

Not to be all nerdy color commentary guy...

But does anyone have any idea how HUGE getting a goal on the 4×4 DURING a four-minute penalty kill is? That’s the kind of shit that will go unnoticed in the box score that will be a turning point for the Red Wings, should they continue the pressure.
