Off-Day Open Thread: Coming Down off the High
I wonder if I'll still be so happy about a 5-4 overtime win against Calgary when the season is over and they're making summer plans that involve two extra months of R&R? In the meantime, I'll stay giddy knowing that Datsyuk, Zetterberg, and Lidstrom plant themselves firmly on the correct side of something Justin Bourne discussed by using a metaphor which I'm going to start calling 'The Cupcake Question".
Our buddy Robocop is back in the fanposts with his X things about the game last night. These are always good for a few chuckles and I'm yet to disagree with any of the points he makes.
Jay Bouwmeester is crying about the good call that sent him to the box with 1:56 left in the game while Niklas Hagman takes a higher road about a slashing call he took that would have made me furious if the center ice ref had made it against a Wings player.
If you haven't seen it, head to Kuklas Korner to watch Corey Perry put the puck into his own net from 200 feet away to seal a Ducks loss. This is like waking up on Christmas morning to find a Game Boy in your stocking.
Have at it below in the comments. Anything goes (unless of course it doesn't)

Sadly
I’m just getting around to watching the game. End of the 1st right now
(yes, I know how it ends)
I can almost never watch a game knowing how it ends. Just kind of ruins things for me.
still, I think I might re-watch this one. I still have it on my DVR.

I’m weird and like to watch urrything that happens in the game when I can. Like the Atlanta game, I wont be able to watch it until the weekend but will I watch it? You bet.
We dominated that first period and it was only 1-1?
by Casey Richey on Nov 22, 2010 9:48 AM CST up reply actions
Totally worth it
Finished it up late last night (for recap purposes), but I was able to watch the comeback develop and just soak it in. If anything, I appreciate what they did even more watching it the second time.

I'm the same way
I’ll “watch” it, by that I mean I’ll fastforward until I see the score change, and then rewind to just before it so I can watch the goal. But I miss all the momentum shifts in between because it’s just not as much fun to watch KNOWING that a goal is coming up.

Bouwmeester
You know, I understand that he was upset at blowing the lead so late in the game. But his comments really sounded like whining, when in fact he should have said “we should never have allowed ourselves to be in that position. We were up 4-2 with 10 minutes left in the third period on the road. We need to clamp down and win the game.” The Flames and no offensive pressure after they made it 4-2, and while a lot of that is attributed to the Wings and their puck possession, the Flames have some good players that should have stepped up. I think JayBo is just upset that he’s going to go down as the biggest bust FA signing/trade in the last 5 years.

Seriously, he's awful.
Once again, I have to put out there that I don’t put a lot of faith in individual Corsi ratings, but he was -19 last night. Miikka Kiprusoff was the only player on Calgary who was worse.
JayBo has just been awful in Calgary. If there’s going to be any reason for Flames fans to rush the team’s offices and forcibly extract Sutter from his job, they should look no further than the fact that he decided to trade Phaneuf and keep Bouwmeester. I don’t like Phaneuf as a player, and I have no idea what was being said in the locker room, but he’s looking like the good guy in this whole situation, and for that I hate Sutter even more.

It’s like they’re not even a real franchise. This is the set of things you’d expect in a movie montage making fun of a failing team right before the plucky skipper brings them all together and they make a run.
Fortunately, this is real life and the Isles will still suck all season long.
by J.J. from Kansas on Nov 22, 2010 12:45 PM CST up reply actions
Contrary to popular belief
I have a sneaky feeling that Isles will move before the anything happens to the Yotes. Wang is not getting his real estate. We can probably expect Kansas City gliders…soon!!
I celebrate Festivus!!!
I sincerely hope not.
Not that I don’t want the Isles to move, but rather I don’t want them to move to Kansas City. Yes, this area has a fancy new arena (that makes money without a sports team), but moving the hapless isles with their shitty coaching, shitty GM, and shitty ownership here aren’t going to do anything either.
Look at how well the Royals draw in attendance with a team that isn’t ready to win. Hell, Arrowhead stadium has a reputation as being one of the loudest in the NFL, but they were talking on the local news last night about how many tickets the owners have to buy back to keep the games from being blacked out locally.
I’d likely buy season tickets to any hockey team that came here, but I just don’t think this area will support a team that’s not ready to win. If the Isles are going to move, let Canada have them.
by J.J. from Kansas on Nov 22, 2010 12:58 PM CST up reply actions
you are right
Johnny Canuck can definitely have one more team. I hope Quebec city or Winnipeg gets one soon. For some reason I do not want the ’Yotes to move. Despite the fact that I despise Doan, I think their presence in the desert lends a balance to the sport!
