Morning Skate: Kings
Since these two teams last met, the Kings beat the Flames 2-1 and lost to the Wild 3-2 in OT. The Red Wings have gone 2-2, losing to the Sharks and Predators but beating the Canadiens and Devils. Today's game is one of three Western Conference games the Wings have this week; facing the Blues on Wednesday and the Blackhawks on Friday.
The Kings are lead offensively by Anze Kopitar, Justin Williams and Dustin Brown--not much has changed since the last meeting.

More including the form after the jump
- Jimmy Howard is starting in net tonight it seems. Hopefully he'll have a performance like he did against Montreal and not one like against San Jose. Does Jimmy have a good night or a bad one?
- Tonight's game is on VERSUS. Mullets will be in high definition. Your favorite mullet of all time? Mine goes to this.
- The Wings now lead the NHL in the goals per game category with 3.43. LA is 19th with 2.59 per. The Kings have a better goals against per game than the Red Wings do though.
- Pavel Datsyuk is starting to separate himself a little bit from the rest of the team as he now has 36 points (11 G, 25 A) in all 28 games so far. Pavel has been excellent this year and is actually sixth in the league in scoring. Will he catch Crosby/Stamkos? Probably not, but we don't need him to either. Thoughts on Pavel's play so far?
- Justin Abdelkader leads the team in +/-. No really, he does. He also leads the team in hits, but you probably could have guessed that.
- Since the majority of you are probably in a good mood since the Lions won, let's play a fun game. What position would each Red Wing play on the Lions?
- Score Prediction: 3-2 Detroit. I think it's a pretty close game but Detroit pulls it out late.
- Player of the Game Prediction: Dan Cleary. He finds ways to get things done this year. Why the hell not?
- Around the League: The Capitals have now gone winless (0-5-1) in their last six games and were beat handily by the Rangers 7-0 last night. Ovechkin ended up fighting Brandon Dubinsky in that game. Stupid Penguins have won 12 in a row, putting them a solid 29 points above the Islanders.

Positions
Well we know Lidstrom would be the quarterback. Dan Cleary would be a tight end. Datsyuk a running back, weaving his way through the defense ala Barry Sanders. Bertuzzi would be middle linebacker, looking to destroy quarterbacks. Holmstrom would be half-back, taking abuse for his qb and getting some short runs here and there. Zetterberg would probably be a wide receiver. Franzen would definitely be a wide receiver, bulling his way to the open field and making spectacular catches. Abdelkader, another tight end. The defensive line would have Stuart and Kronwall as tackles, playing smashmouth…with Ericsson and Rafalski playing on the outside. Howard would be the place kicker and Osgood the punter.

well done, well done. I’d imagine Helm would be the kick/punt returner

Interesting decisions
I’d Have Datsyuk as a shifty slot receiver,
use Eaves/ Ozzy as running backs – lol
Nice
But i would use Datsyuk on defense also reading plays at safety picking passes off, also having the ability to strip anyone of the ball.

3-2 Detroit - Franzen
I’d have Kronwall as the free safety – hitting people across the middle when they don’t expect it.
Hudler would be the punt returner – It’s nice when he produces for you, but not horribly vital to your team’s success
Helm is the shut-down corner. His speed makes half the field inaccessible and the only thing keeping him from being a star wide receiver are his hands.
Pavel Datsyuk is the most complete player in the game.
Mario Lopez’s mullet gave me nightmares.

Good morning Veitna... oh wait, thats a Robin Williams movie.
Howard Will be stupendous tonight!
My Favorite Mullet… mwauhahaha
Pavel won’t catch up on the scoring lead, as Bettman’s CJ worships the great Tutu wearing Crosby. Yes, Cindy is good, but that’s due to the amount of protein he digests. Dats has been great this far, with one or two NHL average player games. The rest has been up to par, if not greater than his standard level of play.
Very surprised that Abby is the leader in +/-, I think we found ourselves a new generation Draper or McCarty.
3-2 Detroit, Bert I threw the dart, and it landed on his picture. :)
Football
Dats = Ballhawking Safety
Abby = Safety ala Delmas
Lidstrom = QB, just like he is on the PP
Kron = LB, just think James Harrison
Z = WR, like a Calvin Johnson way, good luck matching up against him 1 on 1
Howard = K, saving the teams ass on some nights
Cleary = TE
Mule = Fullback, your Mike Allsott, in your face in short yardage, that touchdown is mine way.
Filp = WR, Finesse-like.
Homer = DT, always in the trenches, not always best on the stats, but causes trouble up front.
Hudler = ugh, 3rd string QB… Has talent, but like Stanton, doesn’t produce.
Draper, Miller, Helm, Eaves = You’re Sp. Teams players, 2nd or 3rd position-depth players.
Stuart, Rafalski = CB, Always trying to stop the big play.
Ericsson = LB, the young, up and coming star, but occasionally fucks it up
Salei = Your old, stay at home journeyman LB.
Ozzy = 2nd string DE, gets a few plays, sometimes plays great and causes havoc, other times… just a big whiff of poop.
Kindl = Your practice squad player. Good enough to be with the club, just not THAT good enough to play.
Modano = Brett Farve, without the drama.

I’m continuing my trend in picking against the Wings because it’s working.
Eaves would be like Steve Tasker – special teamer extraordinaire.
Kane’s mullet from the playoffs last year still gives me nightmares.
Capitals
I watched a bit of that game last night, and I’ve gotta tell you, they look completely uninspired right now. For the supposed “best team” in the NHL, they are terrible. The offense looks lost, the defense doesn’t hit, and their goalies are awful. I keep thinking that Pittsburgh is the class of that conference and there’s no one really close to second.
I’ll agree with you on that. Being in the Caps market in Virginia, I get almost all the games on local TV so I’ll have them on as I’m “doing work” for classes or what have you and I haven’t really found them to be that impressive. That team has a lot of problems and they need to correct them or they’re in danger of not only notwinning a top half of the conference but maybe not even winning the division. Who knows.
by Casey Richey on Dec 13, 2010 8:54 AM CST up reply actions
Really sucks that they couldn't take Varlamov out.
And the fact that they got worse after Ovie fought to get them riled up…disappointing. I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s some changes pretty soon.
They couldn't take Varlamov out?
Why? Wasn’t there a backup goalie dressed? It was clear from the highlights he was having a bad game after the 3rd goal, and here I was surprised to see him in to the end of the game.
Just curious.
Funny thing
There was minor Twitter talk last night that the Caps’ struggles right now are reminiscent of the Flyers’ struggles last year and the Penguins’ struggles the year before (as a hint that those were the East’s two Stanley Cup finalists for the previous seasons).
I’ll say here what I said there in response:
“December struggles don’t win championships, defense does. The Capitals’ defense is still second-tier.”
They’re not as bad as they look right now and struggling will help them come together as a team, but there are fundamental flaws with that organization that they’ll need to overcome, starting with the guy behind the bench.

Do you think their situation might be somewhat like
the BJ’s? I mean, as far as not liking their coach.
Not necessarily
I don’t think anybody’ stuning Boudreau out because he’s much more of a players’ coach than Hitchcock ever was.
I just think Boudreau’s a shitty coach.
by J.J. from Kansas on Dec 13, 2010 9:33 AM CST up reply actions
haha.
About all I know about BB is that he was their AHL coach, so he’s got a few favorites from those teams. And he liked Fleischmann to the point of letting him play when he shouldn’t have.
I agree with JJ. I think the players like Boudreau, although the incident with Ovie/Kovy during the media scrum may have soured the relationship just a bit. I think that as long as the team is winning, players and coaches can put aside any personal differences they have to achieve their goals, but when losses are piling up, it could get ugly.
Also like JJ, I think Boudreau just isn’t a very good coach. He’s got a ton of talent to work with but his system is flawed.
3-2 Wings, Bertuzzi
Not sure if I will see the game, I might go down and benefit from some free tickets to the Vikings/Giants game… that is if I don’t get into a car accident, drive of the road b/c of all the ice, or just plain freeze to death in the hell that has fallen over Metro detroit right now.
It was only about 5 inches of snow, but the temperature dropped to 7 degrees or something completely unreasonable so the snow is all frozen. Pain. In. The. Ass. I have to get on the freeways for work and I’m hearing that’s just a mess.

Yep.
The Keweenaw snow removal crews are some of the best in the nation. The only thing I have found that compares to them are the guys who clear the really high elevation passes in the Rockies. Think: constant snowstorm all winter + curvy mountain roads. Those guys have brass ones

I've heard stories about the guys that remove snow from the mountain passes.
I…can’t even imagine. Aren’t the statistics something like one death per year?
Yeah
they lose one every year or two. The whiteouts get so intense that you literally cannot see the front of your car. That’s usually about the time they start closing the passes.

The ice is what killed me
I live ten minutes from my job, it took me over an hour to get to work and probably would of taken longer if I didn’t take back roads. The roads were all just sheets of ice this morning. I got tapped on the back bumper twice by the same jackass and didn’t drive faster than 20 mph. I heard people weren’t even driving more than 30 on I-75. Just a complete mess. I’m staying home for the rest of the day. No football game for me. I’ll just enjoy hockey from my couch.
8 in Lake Orion now
22-24 mph wind, and about 7 inches of snow, not including drifting. Our NC born-and-bred dogs are seeing their first belly-deep snow and having a grand old time leaping and jousting and barking in the back yard. We’ve shoveled twice and still can’t find the front walk. Neither of us have to leave the house today, so I’m spending the afternoon baking bread and cookies. I had a long drive yesterday for a holiday party (what was I thinking?), so it’s mighty good to be home today.
Don't take life so serious, son -- it ain't nohow permanent.
Haha, cool
I’m from Lake Orion. I live in Virginia now for work, but my parents still live in LO. My dad called me this morning to tell me it was snowing (he thinks it’s hilarious that I never get snow, so he likes to rub it in)
But it’s snowing here in Virginia now, which is a first for me. The few times it has snowed, I’m always out to sea and miss it. So excited. I’m hoping for a white Christmas…

Dats has been amazing
You’re probably right in the fact that he wont catch up to Crosby or Stamkos, but the thing is, we’ve been winning games like this, so why change? We all value his defensive effort, the takeaways, all the magical Datsyukian plays he makes. I’d much rather have him than Crosby and Stamkos….
Go for it
Kronwall & Stuart
They’re the Safeties on the Lions. Can’t wait for someone to come over the middle and lay the wood on them….the may not always get the ball, but they’re not gonna miss the guy.
I think Homer is the NT, gets his big butt in the way, can’t be moved and you have no running game as a result.
Abby is the middle LB or ILB if we’re in the 3-4…don’t even think about coming into the middle of the field…Abby, Kronwall & Stuie are there to greet you!
I think Helm may be the “Wes Welker” type, 3rd down / Slot receiver.

Prediction Contest Update Time
Several more people have joined Baroque in the ranks of those who have correctly hit the score and PotG prediction in one game, including one author who had to promise he wouldn’t brag about being in the lead still (and who happens to lead the entire scoring race with six points, but is seriously not bragging).
Here are the current leaders (5 points each):
Baroque: 1 bonus hit and 1 correct PotG
rock n rye: 1 bonus hit and 1 correct PotG
DetroitSports: 1 bonus hit and 1 correct PotG
kylegroombridge and Red, White and a Mile High each have 4 points with 1 correct score and 3 correct PotG predictions
Resident troll onevilklown, as well as Montana rancher Kjell and commenter I don’t know more about, so I can’t give a better title to Darthferrer are in striking distance with 3 points apiece.
Ten commenters could take the lead with a bonus double-correct prediction (provided the people above them don’t also do it)
23 of you have one correct guess.
Fortunately for everybody, unlike the NHL standings by this time of year, there are plenty of opportunities to catch back up. Remember, it’s 1 point for a correct score or player prediction and 4 points if you guess both right in the same game. Nobody has a lead so commanding that they can’t be caught. Keep those guesses coming for your chance to win at the end of the season.
Quick programming note: the spreadsheet we copy into gives us a date if you only give a score prediction instead of a score and a victor. We’re assuming that anybody who guesses May 3rd, 2010 is expecting the Wings to win 5-3.

Spreadsheet problem
Create an extra column next to the column of dates. Right click the number of cells equal to the number of predictions, format cells, go to the Number tab, scroll down to ‘Custom’. Under Type:, type in “m-d”, hit OK. Then highlight all of the “dates”, right click drag over to the cells you just formatted and select “Copy Here as Values only”. The dates should now be scores.
This is assuming you’re using Excel, otherwise that probably won’t work. Figured it would make finding the winners easier.

It’s a google spreadsheet, which works pretty similar.

I’m such an Excel geek, it’s sad. I read the programming note and thought, challenge accepted.
Not happy about the Lions winning
because I’m a Packer fan who is getting sick and tired of Mike McCarthy’s playcalling. And it was just salt in the wounds that Milwaukee native and fellow Wisconsin alum, Deandre Levy, made the play of the game with that interception in the endzone.
That being said, Mule would definitely be an Antonio Gates-type tight end. Prolific, game-changing player on offense, but not the greatest blocker (which I equate to Franzen being a little lazy defensively this season).
Almost everyone would have to play offense and defense, like we did in high school. In which case, here are a few:
Darren Helm- DB/WR/KR His defensive abilities make him a solid nickel back, while his speed causes the other team fits on special teams. He’s the team’s fifth or sixth option at WR because, while he has speed to kill, he’s got no hands.
Drew Miller- DL/OL Solid, not flashy. Does the dirty work so others can grab glory.
Justin Abdelkader- TE/LB/ST He’d be a good LB in a 3-4 defense, and one of those back-up tight ends who grabs a disproportionate number of touchdown passes in the red zone. He’d also be the crazy guy charged with breaking up the wedge while covering kickoffs (because he plays at 110 mph and flies into people), and possibly be the gunner on the punt team.
Pavel Datsyuk- RB/DB He’d be a mix of Barry Sanders and Darrel Revis. He can juke you out of your jock, while on defense he’s just going to take it away and run it back the other way.
Henrik Zetterberg- RB/DE He’s the change-of-pace back who still racks up 900 yards and eight touchdowns a season despite playing second fiddle offensively. On defense he’s the pass rushing end who’s equally solid against the run- anchors the team, gets everyone fired up, make the big plays with regularity, and is poised to be the undisputed leader once the Hall of Fame quarterback retires.
Nicklas Lidstrom- QB Like Drew Brees or Tom Brady- cerebral, always makes the right play, never panics.
Tomas Holmstrom/Ruslan Salei/Todd Bertuzzi/Brad Stuart- OL/DL Each one of them is mostly charged with opening up things for the skill players, which they on offense. Salei and Stuart silently play well at DT, taking on the double team to allow linebackers to get through and make plays, while Bertuzzi and Holmstrom rotate at end where they rack up the occasional sack or fumble, recovery or force.
Dan Cleary- FB/do-everything LB He plays some at fullback, but his real value is as that 260-lb, 6’3" defender who can cover the tight end, spy the qb, drop back to strong safety, play each linebacker position, put his hand on the ground on passing plays, and on rare occasion flank out and cover the slot wr. Just like a hockey player who can move up and down four lines without missing a beat.
and I could go on and on…

Positional Placement (w/ duplicates :) My Team :)
QB = Brian Rafalski (Lidstrom has the best vision but Rafalski has amazing site and long break out passes etc)
WR1 = Zetterberg – just a stud – Eurotwins As WR crazy yes..but dominant and good chemistry between the two always opening routes and dependable
WR2 = Datsyuk, Dangling shifty slot receiver in the Wes Welker mold
TE = Ericsson – Like to see the big body blocking and occasionally leaking out for offense
TE = Franzen — a big body but with skills to exploit defenses
RB = Cleary — bruising relentless bucketes…no stop in him
RT = Salei – Big dude keepin the lines firm
RG = Modano — Veteran boy playin’ some tough minutes that involves little running
C = Holmstrom — Just a big body that takes consistent abuse
LG = Stuart - Gritty and strong – no one is breaking through the left side- Big body capable of handling the physical and dishing out punishment
LT = Kronwall
DE = Filppula – Finesse yes, deceptively good at reading things though and can create matchup problems with his moves
DT = Howard – who knows more about eating space than a goalie?
DT = Ericsson – young man with size and can handle double duties
DE = Abdelkader Kid can do it all, physical to handle the strength and fast to get after people Gritty old man can run still run down people and get dirty
OLB = Draper -
MLB = Bertuzzi — Dude is just a giant bear
OLB = Miller — Can be a nuisance and rugged
CB = Helm – has the speed to just shut down and shadow anybody
CB = Jimmy Howard – has very good hands and quick reaction times
FS = Lidstrom – yes a little surprising, but ball/puck hawk that just scans the field and will always be at the right place at the right time
SS = Kronwall Has to be Kronwal – i mean…come on dude take out the ‘charging’ penalty and you got a runaway freight train!
K = Ozzie – needs to be on here somewhere and a statesman
P = Hudler - my my, what has this little man been relegated to :/
KR = Helm – dude is just fast
Coach = Babcock – well duh
Grumpy Old Man jawing in the stands = Chelios speaks for itself lol
This was fun :D
Jimmy playing DT and CB at the same time? That’s only reserved for Julius Peppers ;)

Franzen has more goals this season than last season, and in the same number of games played. Good sign or not really considering the majority of Franzen’s season was spent on IR?
I think it's a good sign thus far
Lets see how the next 15 games or so go for him. Franzen can be incredibly streaky at times, but when he’s hot he’s hot… If he keeps this rate, he’ll score about 39 this year, which would be a new career high he set in ‘08-’09 with 34 Goals (in 73 games, which averages to a tad over 38 goals). I would be extremely happy to see him with an even 40 before the regular season ends.

I don't know...
Waffles definitely look better, but when her face is on the picture, it’s not ruining my ability to enjoy a particular breakfast/dinner food.

With me, it's the opposite
Now I’m worried that I’ll give in to my sudden urge to pour syrup all over my wife’s face.

You're going to have to do better than that
If J.J.‘s wife is like mine, he’ll need at least enough to cover the divorce attorney’s costs.
Just be sure...
not to accidentally call her “Mrs. Butterworth.”

3-1 Filppula
Val needs another breakout game and i think this’ll be the one with a goal and an assist.

Questions is: Who is actually going to want to sign him and will he swallow his greed and take a smaller contract? His save percentage is comparable to his replacement Niemi and JSG playing over the river for the Toronto Waffles. In fact, his percentage is worse than both of those goaltenders and only bests DiPietro, and the Bolts Tandem.
Maybe if there’s a season ending injury, and Greg Goldberg isn’t available

possibly Montreal? I don’t know their cap space but Alex Auld doesn’t seem to be a very good #2

capgeek says
Little over 1mil, 4.7 in Long-Term IR space. Auld is counting for 1mil, Price 2.75

ah okay, that was just my name out of a hat really in terms of thinking about teams with a lopsided difference in 1 to 2 goalie.

Maybe
the islanders? His KHL stats are about the same as DiPietros… and they have a large chunk of cap space

In my preseason predictions
I picked Nabokov for Vezina and got laughed at for not knowing he left the NHL. Now he can return, have 20 shutouts and I’ll have the last laugh! HA HA!!!!
Can I have a pony while we’re at it?

Datsyuk
He’s actually tied for forth in scoring with 36 points. Martin St. Louis has 37 but two extra games, so I say Pav really is third in the league. Looks like another MVP type season for him.
Let’s start the Datsyuk for Hart campaign now!!!!
4-3 (OT) Wings
With Pav as PotG. Dude’s just too hot to ignore right now.
And bravo on the Wings-as-Lions rosters, guys. I’ve got nothing to add there, ’tis good stuff.

It has saved my hockey-viewing life. Just click on today’s “NHL Today!” thread, there’s already 2 links there to online streams for the Wings-Kings game.
4-2 Wings, Filppula
Or as Babcock likes to call him…Fili-POO-la
Why Fil? Just because.
3-2 wings, Jimmy Howard.
Of course, I entered that without reading ahead to see who was actually starting in goal tonight.
I'm expecting 100% improvement from the Lions this season.
