Morning Skate: Duck a l'orange

Jimmy Howard enjoys classy things

Classy meal for a classy fanbase.

Detroit follows it's 5-3 victory over the Sharks by heading into Anaheim to take on the Ducks. The Ducks got hot for a bit but then cooled off. However, they're only 2 points back of first place Dallas in the Pacific Division. The Ducks have shown the ability to turn it on at times this season and be a threat with Ryan Getzlaf, Corey Perry and Bobby Ryan. However, they've also showed numerous instances of going completely flat and playing very uninspired hockey.

The question for tonight is which of those two teams will show up to play the Red Wings?

More after the jump and Anaheim Calling is your SB Nation page for the Ducks.

Star-divide

  • Jimmy Howard will start in net for the Red Wings and Chris Osgood will back him up, finally returning to the active roster. It has been almost 2.5 fortnights since Howard has not been in between the pipes for the Red Wings. How pleased have you been with Jimmy's efforts this season?
  • The Ducks are incredibly streaky. Started the season on 3 straight losses, alternated losses for 8 straight games (that's a streak isn't it?), won six straight, lost six straight (2 OT), and have most recently won 3 straight. So...they're due for a loss maybe?
  • Anaheim allows a lot of shots per game (34.4 avg) while Detroit fires about 33.6 on net per. Will the Wings put a shooting gallery type of attack into place tonight?
  • George Parros went to Princeton. Classy.
  • Pavel Datsyuk and Henrik Zetterberg need to keep up this type of performance. I know that's asking a lot for them to put up those types of numbers every night and I don't expect that at all. It was just be pretty, you know, sweet.
  • Anaheim has allowed four or more goals in 11 games and a lot of reason for the drop off in their defense is the loss of Scott Niedermayer. The Ducks' defense isn't close to what it used to be and the Wings need to look to exploit that and keep the pressure in Hiller's end.
  • Bobby Ryan leads the Ducks in goals and Corey Perry leads team in overall points. I think if the Wings are able to shut those two (as well as Getzlaf) down or at least limit their impact then they should be able to leave Anaheim with a win.

  • Anaheim Ducks Injuries

    Questionable

    Player Injury Type Injury Date
    Aaron Voros other-excused 12/03/2010

Out (IR / Out / Suspended / Physically unvailable)

    Player Injury Type Injury Date
    Jason Jaffray knee 09/21/2010

  • Player of the game prediction: Pavel Datsyuk. He and Zetterberg have been turning it up and it's hard to pick against them at either of them at this point.
  • Score prediction: 4-1 Detroit. I think the Wings continue on their success with a big win over the Ducks

I’m giving in and changing my pick here. Franzen hasn’t shown up on the road at all this year and the circus is hot right now. 13 will be a very lucky (and classy) number tonight.

Prediction Contest Update

Baroque is the only person who has correctly hit both a score and PoTG prediction so far with the 4-2 victory over Columbus where Howard was the fan-voted PoTG.

Red, White and a Mile High has four correct predictions total; 3 PoTG and 1 score prediction. None of those overlap though.

Corey Perry is something else. In that, I’ve yet to find the proper words to describe him. He’s a good player but good lord is he an unclasy player. I mean, he doesn’t even have a monocle!

by Casey Richey on Dec 3, 2010 12:24 PM CST up reply actions

Probably

When he scored the “own goal” against Edmonton, I almost cried from laughter.

And as Casey said, he doesn’t have a monocle, and he uses his cane in a most “unclassy” way (let your imagination run wild with that one).

by Amerinadian on Dec 3, 2010 12:26 PM CST up reply actions

Ah yes… and there’s Rob Blake, who used HIS cane to try and de-cane Perry… he’s truly a class act too.

And honestly.. In your eyes who would you all rather have on your team Big Bert or Perry?

Won't happen

Bert is bigger than 5’10" and 190 lbs, so Perry won’t take him on.

However, a Perry-“little kid in the stands wearing a Wing jersey” fight is likely.

Here's the differences I see...

One… It’s not almost midnight after a looong day of back and forth.

Two… I introduced myself and my intentions before just “commenting”… (on this thread and another on WiiM.)

Three… I’m not singling you out by my comments or by name.

And Four… It’s not a post game discussion after my team just beat your team.

Am I wrong?

1) What is the statute of limitations on this? Since the back and forth happened on Tues, it’s OK for you to shit on me Tues. night, but by Friday all should be forgotten and we should just accept you with open arms on our site? If I were the eye-for-an-eye sort I should be slamming out insults like “moron” and “bitch” on my keyboard with caps lock on.

2) you’re right, I didn’t introduce myself. However, I don’t recall an introduction when you were trolling here during the playoffs last year.

3) yep, I singled you out. Because you’re so damned classy.

4) The game was definitely not over when you started flinging shit at me. And everyone but you and ED was just fine talking with me once I made it clear i was looking for an armistce.

I’m not trying to chase you off or restart a fire, but consider your own actions next time you have a visitor on FTF or would like hospitality on other boards.

Every other team has just as many idiot fans as the wings. Get real. Should the red wing organization apologize for having the most popular team and profitable team in the country (not in canada)? This garbage argument is for stupid people (i.e., the dumbass who posted the exact same thing at Anaheim Calling).

by Eric @ PRBU on Dec 3, 2010 3:01 PM CST reply actions

The key here is to ignore it

I agree 100% with you. If I had a nickel for every single person that I saw claimed Wing fans were “classless, arrogant, stupid….etc” I’d be able to blog full-time for a living. Like you said, every single fanbase has those types of people, Red Wings included.

The fans that are like that are easy to spot, and ignoring them simply makes them go away. Obviously this is easier said than done at times, but it’s the only way to ensure that things stay at least remotely civil, both here and on other sites.

Shit talk is fine, but let’s make sure it’s in fun and about the game.

For the most part, there is very little difference in the average income, education, or intelligence level of any fanbase and I’d like to think that for the most part, the people who try to point out the differences are those that are bringing the average of their own fanbase down the most.

I predicted after their 5-1 loss last week, we will go on a huge tear so far I was right. So keeping with that thought I predict a 4-1 win over Anaheim tonight.

Love the spirit.

Do you have a prediction for the Red Wings player of the game (as decided by us, with a vote if necessary)?

Cleary

Can anyone expalin the NHL

schedule to me? The Wings have played 22 games and the Hawks 27? This makes 0 sense to me?
No other team has played as few games as the Wings, which means they will be bunching them up later in the year, giving more chances for injury.
There should be a a system does not allow this to happen. It is quite unfair!

there should also be

systems for ensuring consistent reffing and impeaching a commissioner.

"Can anyone expalin the NHL"

Before I saw anything else, my answer was going to be this:

No.

Can we exMcCain it..

For the set of ‘archaic’ rigmaroles that have been etched on NHL’s pillar of edicts…

i've posted a couple times before

that this month is hell for us. its the start of like 16 games between now and new years.

by onevilklown on Dec 3, 2010 4:27 PM CST up reply actions

Good thing

we picked up so many points at home and in November. Though with the way this team has been playing I’m not worried about failing to get points. Whoop whoop!

by Brobz on Dec 3, 2010 4:42 PM CST up reply actions

before i said i would be really happy with getting 24 out of 32 possible points and no more injuries..

by onevilklown on Dec 3, 2010 4:44 PM CST up reply actions

5-3 Wings

Kronwall POTG with a goal, an assist, and Selanne’s ass in a sling.

by LeftWingLocked on Dec 3, 2010 5:02 PM CST reply actions

It'd be nice...

…but I’m kinda diggin’ the blue line corps being intact this year. Perry breaking Kronner’s fist with his face would mean the Detroit back end reKindls the old flame. I’m not sure I have the stomach for that.

The tire is done!

that only took a few hours worth of motivation and ten minutes of work.

Good job

hey all … hope you don’t mind if I wish for an earthquake that is centered at the game tonight … but short of that, please beat the Ducks. :)

And don’t tell Earl of BoC I was here … ha!

(btw, sorry – I’ll get shit for saying this, but some of us at FTF can see good-natured fun when it’s directed at us) … (shrugs)
