Around SBN: NFL Owners Vote to Change Trade Deadline

Morning Skate: Top hats cleaned, Monocles ready, Canes in hand

Lean on me, when you're not strong.

The Red Wings return to Detroit after a three-game trip out to the West Coast, a trip they picked up 5 of a possible 6 points on. Two of those points came on Tuesday night with a 5-3 win over tonight's opponent, the San Jose Sharks. Henrik Zetterberg put up a four point night with two goals and two assists in the win and Pavel Datsyuk's highlight reel goal and assist were enough to give the Red Wings two points.

Tonight the Wings look to continue on their success at home as they have a 10-1-2 record at home. The Sharks are 5-5-2 on the road.

IMPORTANT!!

(For those that missed it on Saturday)

Hey folks, so we've got a bit of a new format that we're going to try out for our little prediction contest. It gets a little difficult to track all of the predictions throughout the day with all of our schedules so we're going to try something a bit new out after the jump to make things easier.

More after the jump...but not much more since we played them on Tuesday

Star-divide

  • Jimmy Howard is expected to get the start in net for Detroit. Chris Osgood started on Saturday and played pretty well, didn't deserve the loss in the game but it's the way things played out. Howard will probably get the start at home tonight and
  • In their two games since playing Detroit, the Sharks dropped a 4-0 beat the Senators (Heatley's return to Ottawa, Niemi in net) and lost to the Canadiens 3-1 (Niemi in net). The odd thing is they only allowed 19 shots on net against the Canadiens and lost but allowed 28 to the Senators and won.
  • Antti Niemi is expected to start tonight for the Sharks. Niemi was superhyped around the league last year and I didn't really ever buy into it. I think we're really starting to see this season that he really benefited from the incredible team in front of him in Chicago. This year, he's having to work hard to get his wins because the Sharks defense has been reduced by injuries and the departure of Rob Blake. In his career, Niemi is 2-1-1 with one of those wins coming in the shootout. That was the shootout in which Pavel Datsyuk did the soft pop fly over Niemi and Todd Bertuzzi did a spin move, as is customary in the Bertuzzi household.
  • The Sharks now sit in last place in the Pacific Division with 28 points through 25 games. Last year through 25 games the Sharks had 34 points

  • San Jose Sharks Injuries

    Questionable

    Player Injury Type Injury Date
    Niclas Wallin leg 12/05/2010
    Kent Huskins other-excused 12/05/2010

Out (IR / Out / Suspended / Physically unvailable)

    Player Injury Type Injury Date
    Devin Setoguchi other-excused 11/27/2010
    Jason Demers other-excused 11/21/2010

  • Score Prediction: 2-0 Detroit. I think Detroit might have a tougher go of it tonight than they did on Tuesday of last week.
  • Player of the game Prediction: Jimmy Howard. Well, if I predict that above, I have to go with this right?
  • Off topic discussion: State your case for why you are the classiest Red Wings' fan.

Interesting new format. 4-2 Detroit with Cleary netting the game winner and an assist, PotG for sure.

Also, interesting factoid: the bottom of the East is separated by 23 points from the top of the East while the bottom of the West is separated by just 13 points from the Wings at the top.

by Apocalyptic0n3 on Dec 6, 2010 6:19 AM CST reply actions

2nd interesting factoid

Wings are ranked first in almost every power ranking, except for bleachereport.com. They list the fartguins as numero uno. Yahoo rankings are a week old, but given their love of the fartguins, will probably list them numero uno as well, if they ever update it.

Maybe this year we’ll get our rubber match?

To be fair

The penguins are absolutely demolishing opponents right now. I dont think they’ve played anyone with a shutdown defensive pairing, forward line or system in a while but they are kicking some serious ass.

by Eric @ PRBU on Dec 6, 2010 9:39 AM CST up reply actions

Grudgingly agreed

I’ve long had an issue with people who feel that Power Rankings should just be a regurgitation of the standings. It’s about who is playing the best at a particular moment. I honestly don’t mind the Pens being listed at #1 on these types of things, and the Wings should probably be #2. It’s the official standings that really count, and the Wings are #1.

3-1 Wings, Cleary

Unfortunately, due to two final exams on Thursday (back to back, which really blows), I will not be able to join this classy game chat tonight….sad panda

However, I think the Wings come out better at home, and once again too many injuries, not enough depth for San Jose to stay with them.

3-1, Detroit...PotG: Howard

Seems to be a popular score prediction…

Wings will prolly have to rely on Howard tonight because of teh quick turnaround from back-to-backs on the West Coast…

by tehGOALIE on Dec 6, 2010 11:01 AM CST reply actions

You know, I kind of hate games like these

These bullshit “redemption” games that wannabe teams come to play to prove to themselves that they don’t really suck. San Jose is going to come out tonight with playoff intensity and the Wings are going to need to match it for a game that’s a nice two points to get in December so you can throw them away later, but isn’t nearly as important Detroit’s psyche as it is to a San Jose team struggling to rediscover its identity.

In other words, I’m going to be pissed if Detroit loses. If they win, I might just write another article about how nobody can hang with us.

Aw, who the shit am I kidding? I might write that article regardless.

Good idea

Articles like that are great for me, because they are so earth-shattering that they make me question my beliefs in the entire human race.

And no one can hang with us, even though tonight’s game means absolutely diddly-squat.

The Sharks are a maddeningly inconsistent team this year, so they could come out and beat the Wings 5-0 or lose by the same score. I think they are going to come out with some intensity that the Wings will have trouble matching after a west coast road trip, but the Wings will hang around enough to get the win.

I'm the classiest Wing's fan because....

While in a drunken rage following the Wing’s loss in Game 7 to the Penguins, I happened to be at a bar where a Pittsburgh fan came up to me and started to tell me how much better they were (among other things). I could very well have killed this man, instead, I said, “it’s best 2 of 3, it’s still 1-1 dick.” And I proceeded to take what I can only remember to be multiple shots of whiskey.

by eshad15 on Dec 6, 2010 12:49 PM CST reply actions

I think you win

I didn’t go out in public for two days after that. I don’t remember a lot of it because I was in a drunken stupor, but I’m pretty sure going without pants for two days is less classy than preventing myself from killing a Penguins fan.

by eshad15 on Dec 6, 2010 1:01 PM CST up reply actions

I know how you feel

I was in the heart of Dive country wearing my jersey at the bar for Game 7. It was unbelieveable how much shit I got, considering that all but 1 of the aggressors weren’t even Pens fans (One even thought Fleury was a forward). I was tempted to get into a physical fight several times but, I was definitely too skunk-drunk to do any actual fighting. Verbal sparring tends to favor me anyway, so, stick to what you’re good at, right?

No lie. Was driving to get some ice cream and eat away my sadness, when the weather radio comes on out of nowhere and tells me theres a tornado roughly where I am at. It happened to be about 3 miles east of me…but that’s not very far away.

Whats up with teams giving huge honors to players who retire after only playing for a 1 year or two with that franchise. Christ. The Nordiques retire Bourques number, the penguins doing extra mile for Guerin. Holy Shit!!! I think its time we retire the numbers of Hasek, Robitaille, Hull, Murphy, and for that matter, Duschene. Detroit be more solid against the forcheck tonight. They need to be very aggrssive on the boards in their own zone against SJ. I was very uncomfortable with how much (cliche’ incoming) “time and space” the sharks were goven in Detroit’s zone last week, especially, down below the goal line. It resulted in several great chances and a goal for SJ.
