Around SBN: How The Kings Beat The Coyotes: Lather, Rinse, Repeat

Morning Skate: Let's try that again

Surely the Red Wings want to put forth a better effort than on Monday against the Sharks, a 5-2 loss. I am serious, and don't call me Shirley. I just made myself sad.

Nashville currently sits (tied) in last place in the Central Division with 30 points, 7 behind Detroit. It's been a rockier road than expected for the Predators so far. They started out a perfect 3-0 and looked poised to be a challenger for the Central Division crown after last year's 100+ point season. They followed that start with three consecutive overtime losses. Two wins got them back on track right? Wrong. The Preds dropped five straight games before winning two straight in the shootout. In short: this team is very streaky and unpredictable.

Pekka Rinne has played in 9 more games than Anders Lindback but a knee injury to Rinne means Lindback will start. Lindback is 4-1-2 this season with a 2.71 GAA and will be called on to stop the NHL's most prolific offense.

IMPORTANT!!

(Last time we post the reminder, I swear)

Hey folks, so we've got a bit of a new format that we're going to try out for our little prediction contest. It gets a little difficult to track all of the predictions throughout the day with all of our schedules so we're going to try something a bit new out after the jump to make things easier. Don't forget to vote on it either.

On the Forecheck is your SB Nation Predators' affiliate. More after the jump.

  • Caption the photo above by leaving a comment below.
  • Did you caption it yet? Do it.
  • I suppose Jimmy Howard will be starting in net. Jimmy had a bad performance (helped out by a bad defense) against the Sharks on Monday. Howardever, he has shown in the past that he is more than capable of bouncing back with a big performance. Do we get good Jimmy tonight?
  • The Predators have to have the tallest goaltending tandem in NHL history. Pekka Rinne (he of the double consonant in first and last name club) is 6'5" and Anders Lindback is 6'6". What does it mean? Absolutely nothing. Although, they probably help 5'8" Francois Bouillon get the cookies off the top shelf.
  • Nashville's goal scoring is very, very well distributed: 3 players with 6 goals, 2 with 4, 3 with 3, 6 with 2. In classy terms: equitable apportionment.
  • Let's see, we're playing Nashville? Joel Ward will score a hat trick or something. Six of Ward's 32 goals have come against Detroit. Unclassy.
  • *Checks if it's home or away game* Sweet, no train whistles. Toots leads the Predators in PIMs and... giveaways, that's about it.
  • It's not the be all and end all in hockey but +/- is a decent indicator at a quick glance of how things are going for a player. Shea Weber is a -10 this year. I would imagine a good portion of those minuses have come against the opposition's top lines though.

  • Nashville Predators Injuries

    Player Injury Type Injury Date

  • Score prediction: 4-3 Detroit
  • Player of the game prediction: Johan Franzen. Make me proud/right tonight, Johan.
  • Scores around the league last night: Habs over Sens 4-1, Bruins over Sabres 3-2 in OT, Panthers over the Avs 4-3 in OT, Flames 4 Yzermans 2, Cam Fowler won the game in the 10th round of the SO for the Ducks over the Oilers (3-2).
  • Topic for discussion: Will the Predators start to surge back and get back to where they were last year or are they going to stay at the bottom of the division?

After reading this article in the Freep, I’m reminded of Shea Weber’s bomb of a shot. Let’s hope everyone’s wearing their skate guards, and we don’t see any shots go where they’re not supposed to.

I think Rinne being out will really hurt the Preds. Hopefully the Wings can capitalize on that tonight.

I always forget to make predicitons

But here goes: 3-1 Detroit wins, POG is Pavel.

I can't see Nashville not improving

They always do. I know past performance is no guarantee of future results, but year after year despite changes in players and a frayed shoestring budget, they manage to make the playoffs over and over.

I wonder what that team would do with a real budget, or if they would just spend like drunken sailors and have a worse team as a result.

On Weber’s +/-, not only is he having to stop the Rick Nashes and the Henrik Zetterbergs every night, he spent a bulk of the year without Ryan Suter, who is in some ways better. Neither player is the same without the other, and it showed; and its largely where that -10 came from.

Yeah all I could think of for the caption

was the sexy black kid remix for the oozinator. If you do not know what I am referring to I suggest you google it. Also, Pavel takes the cake tonight with 2 goals and an assist in a 5-1 shellacking.

I have no doubt

that the preds will be back in 5th or 6th before its all said and done. There is alot of hockey to play and although they blew a lead the other night they have earned a pt in every game the past 5. I think they get Rinne back and some others and they start to make their annoying return.

by bond021 on Dec 8, 2010 8:16 AM CST reply actions

one of the writers

for the nashville blog predicted the wings would fall on their face this year (as he brought up in his write up today). I am not idiot. The wings are eventually not going to be good during my lifetime. But I rue that day because then people who predict their downfall every year will eventually way they were right. Even though their prediction percentage is going to be about 5% accuracy. If that makes sense. But that day is coming. At which point I will cry.

i read that only as “mysterious leg” and it sounded badass. But the issue part makes it unbadass. I haven’t watched Lindback yet, how does he compare to Rinne?

by Casey Richey on Dec 8, 2010 9:30 AM CST up reply actions

Technically, they seem like very similar players, mainly thanks to their huge frames, but Lindback’s glove is slower and he doesn’t consolidate his movement like Rinne does, which leaves him flailing a bit more. That said, they’re pretty much the same goalie, one just has more experience and savvy than the other. Rinne’s much more prone to completely steal a game.

The place is quiet, usually snow-covered, and it’s easier playing basketball at the gym because the only folks left are the Chinese grad students. At least that’s the way it was 15-20 years ago.

This is when you write the paper, grab a thesaurus, and then try to take all those big intelligent sounding words you used and break them up into 2-3 smaller words that say the same thing, only slightly less intelligently.

Now is the time for a person such as yourself to put ink to paper, bring a thesaurus ’round, and then make an attempt to take each one of those large, intelligent-sounding words previously used by yourself and expound upon them by utilising perhaps two or three less-complex words known to deliver the exact same message, but through use of a lower form of discourse.

assignment: "research anything remotely related to the ancient city of Babylon"

my choice? music. so chemical names (while extremely cool IMO) wont help me much unless i throw in something about “instruments decomposed over time because of reactions of such and such chemicals.” but saying something like that would likely require a source . . .

even if i finish, i still probably can’t watch the game (attentively) because i’ve got to catch up on studying for Friday’s final (a class i actually care about). but once i get to Friday, even though i have two things next week, those are relative cakewalks compared to this week. then it’s a winter break back home watching the Red Wings (among other activities, of course).

by Elfuego51 on Dec 8, 2010 4:41 PM CST reply actions

Howard only get 16 stops, but Helm has 2 goals and 1 assist along with 5 hits. I would vote for Helm rather than Howard. It could happen!

by Damenace on Dec 8, 2010 4:49 PM CST up reply actions

Yeah, it is possible

But I kinda see it as picking a longshot (someone other than Jimmy for PoG in a shutout) within a longshot (shutout). I would guess more than 80% of the time, if there’s a shutout, the goalie will be PoG.

Actually

It might not be a bad move. It gives you a chance to get lucky at either of the 2 categories. Especially since nailing both categories in the same game is so tough.

Z...

I picked Z for POG cuz I think he’ll be one really fired up after….dumdadadum.
Or it might be Dats…or Cleary.
Anyway, I’m thinking one of the veterans, and leaders will lead the way to a big win.

No need to be such a perfectionist. We all enjoy them and appreciate your efforts, so don’t worry.

hope not

I don’t like yellow or orange. The only teams I can deal with it are Boston and Philly, other than that BLEARGH!
