Tollefsen
Ole Kristian Tollefsen will not play tonight due to illness in his family. Go Norway anyway!

I feel all dirty
Not hating on Kandy Kane. Go Rafs!
WOOT!
I turned on the game in our conference room and my boss walked by. My first thought was “Oh hell..” until he told me “Don’t change the channel…I’m going for my coffee.”
Hellz yea.
Oh good
Cindy stuff. Isn’t this an American broadcast?
Off to the bar!
Two things I’ve learned: I just can’t bring myself to pull for Kane and it feels just as good to put them by Hiller when he’s not playing for the Ducks.
Good win by the USA
Switzerland had trouble clearing their zone all day. US kinda laid back in the third, but still gets the win.

Ice size
I may be mistaken—but I always remember enjoying the larger ice surface and the added space behind the net in olympic hockey. After watching the USA game I noticed that this isn’t the case this year as they are on the NHL Canuck’s ice. Any info?

Back from the bar
Didn’t get to see the first due to women’s curling. 0-0 after the first, Andy must be happy?
watching Canada/Norway
is like watching boys vs men…going to get a lot worse than 2-0

absolutely
May the team lose on a brain-dead Pronger penalty and a Corey Perry stupid turnover! :)
(That way no blame goes to the coaching or management.)

Russian observations
Pavel is just as much of a puck thief as ever – and I loved seeing him kill penalties. Latvia took no time at all to make the wise decision to back off when he has the puck near the boards in an attempt to avoid looking silly.
And even though I can’t remember his name, Russia has a defenseman wearing the number 5, and for some reason (I wonder why …) I find the sight of a number 5 in red shooting from the point or right in front of the goalie very comforting.
Russian power play was familiarly ineffective, but I think that will improve next game now that they have gotten their first win out of the way and have actually had a chance to play with each other.
Alexander Radulov was very impressive. He was always the player with Nashville who scared me the most, because it was crystal clear that he could fire a few pucks past a goalie in a twinkle and flip the score of a game very quickly, but I’d forgotten just how quick and dynamic he was. And in the intervening years he’s developed a defensive game, too. Very nice player.
Sergei is still a tremendous skater even at his advanced age for hockey. That scruff needs to go, though – it looks horrible. :D
Latvia was a very plucky team but their goaltender was excellent. They will be a tough opponent the rest of the tournament if they keep this level op play up.

I only watched from the second period, but from what I saw Datsyuk was very average. He had an assist, a penalty (I saw the call, but not the penalty) which lead to a goal against, and 3 shots on goal (not to mention countless chances he seemed to shy away from). And most of the time when he stole the puck, he coughed it up right away. I’m kind of surprised that he had third most TOI for Russia; he must have been invisible for many of his shifts. Federov was more effective.
Latvia looked much better on most of their power plays than Russia did on theirs but were already down 0-3 when I started watching, and kept taking penalties to make it 0-4—they did score 7 seconds after Datsyuk’s penalty ended. Latvia’s goaltender was pretty good in spite of his defense.
To me it looked like Datsyuk is trying to figure out how best to work with his linemates. Ovechkin and Semin play with each other, so he’s the oddball until he gets used to them. I expect a better second game from him for sure.
I just love watching Datsyuk play any time. :)
