February 17 :: Olympic Game Thread

Join us today for a special game thread during today's Olympic contests:

3:00pm :: Finland vs. Belarus [airing on MSNBC]
Valtteri Filppula is a member of Team Finland, but last I heard he was injured and may not be in the lineup. Grand Rapids Griffin and Red Wing prospect Sergei Kolosov was named to Team Belarus last month.

7:30pm :: Germany vs. The Detroit Red Wings -- I mean, Sweden [airing on CNBC]
Team Sweden is -- like in '06 -- full of Wings. Detroit captain Nicklas Lidstrom also captains the Tre Kronor, a team that includes Niklas Kronwall, Henrik Zetterberg, and Johan Franzen (who was a late injury replacement for Tomas Holmstrom). Third string goaltender Stefan Liv is a former Red Wings prospect.

11:55pm :: Czech Republic vs. Slovakia [airing on CNBC]
Come watch as Wings fans boo Marian Hossa and Tomas Kopecky mercilessly. Playing for the Czech Republic is Red Wing prospect Miroslav Blatak.

Feel free to leave some comments - and enjoy your international experience!

And he’s having a nice little game for himself. Nice to see him get a goal.

He did have a good game. And was getting some praise from the announcers. With the crew there, I was almost worried.

Did anyone else hear Roenick call Holmstrom “Tomas Holmquist”?

Anyone want to guess which game will be the most one-sided

Has to be Sweden, right? Unless I don’t know something about Finland.

I root for the Tigers, Pistons, Red Wings and yes, the Lions.

11-0 Canada

in the women’s game against Sweden. It just now at half way point of the game. Ridiculous.

21) Peter Forsberg — 40) Henrik Zetterberg — 27) Patrik Hörnqvist

this is weird

I find myself expecting certain things out of players based on their numbers. Russia had a defenseman wearing 5, and even though it wasn’t Lidstrom I still felt like he knew what he was doing at all times. Sweden has a player wearing 33, and I’m surprised he isn’t as fast as Draper. :)

I feel kind of dumb-somehow the new names keep surprising me. Duh…it is the Olympics, obviously not the same people. I did have fun watching Val this afternoon though. He had a great game.

by crperreau on Feb 17, 2010 7:46 PM CST up reply actions

I'm just glad

It isn’t just me!

I was watching the Russian number 5 all during the game last night and I don’t have a clue what the man’s real name is because I just kept thinking of him as Lidstrom.

And that was one sweet goal to make it 2-0.

Backstrom is an amazing passer. It’s worth the two week break from NHL hockey just to see him playing with four of the Wings guys, even though he isn’t on the same lines.

I hate the fact that there are ads without media breaks. Missing faceoffs and the subsequent ten seconds really annoys me.

by crperreau on Feb 17, 2010 7:54 PM CST reply actions

missing hockey for overtime curling really annoys me

It would be more interesting if “sudden death curling” involved dropping rocks. On heads. :)

That would be taking “sudden death” to a whole new level. Hmmm…. I bet there are a lot of hockey fans that would love that tonight.

by crperreau on Feb 17, 2010 7:57 PM CST up reply actions

The ratings would be phenomenal, I’ll bet.

Don’t inform NBC of that-they’ll try to find some way to make it work.

by crperreau on Feb 17, 2010 8:10 PM CST up reply actions

oooooo...

I have a coworker I could nominate. He doesn’t know squat about curling but needs to have his head smushed. :D

Haha, I could find a few too. I’m assuming the same coworker that you were talking about in the game thread the other night? Must really be obnoxious. :P

by crperreau on Feb 17, 2010 8:16 PM CST up reply actions

yes

One of my other coworkers is interviewing for another job to get away from him. I’m thinking about doing the same, just seeing what is available in the next year or so.

The irritating thing is that whenever there is one cancer in an organization, the first people lost are the ones who work hard and do well at their jobs because they can most easily find something else. When if the management would wise up and toss the idiot overboard everyone else would be a lot happier to stick around.

If people are leaving to get away from him, he really MUST need a curling stone dropped on his head.

by crperreau on Feb 17, 2010 8:28 PM CST up reply actions

I'm going to have to give him a fake name

To make it easier to grumble about him. Maybe I’ll start calling him Todd. :D

There ya go. The Evil Internet Alias: Todd.

by crperreau on Feb 17, 2010 8:37 PM CST up reply actions

this is my evil twin, Todd :)

And although Germany is losing, they have been pretty impressive all game. I think Germany and Latvia have been the spunkiest underdogs of the games so far.

shutout for Sweden

I’m a little surprised they didn’t get more than two goals, but Germany played a solid defensive game.

Germany did come out stronger than I expected, and Sweden didn’t really play all that hard. They’re going to have to pick up the pace in the next few games.

by crperreau on Feb 17, 2010 8:53 PM CST up reply actions

Wow, not sure if you switched to the other NBC coverage, but Lindsey Vonn is crying tears of happiness over her gold. It’s cool.

by crperreau on Feb 17, 2010 8:55 PM CST up reply actions

yes I did

I love seeing people cry tears of joy. It’s so genuine, and after it looked like she might not even be able to ski with her bruised leg.

Every time I saw the young Canadian man who won the moguls for the host country’s first gold of the Olympics, he was either wiping the tears out of his eyes or just starting to tear up all over again. I hope the poor thing didn’t get dehydrated. What a sweet story he has.

Yes. I normally am not a huge Canadian fan, at least over the US, but it was very cool when he won. With his brother and everything…his name will always be remembered up there. I think they were calling him “Alexandre the Great”

Former Red Wings

Miroslav Blatak had 1 assist, 2 PIM, and +1
Tomas Fleischmann did nothing

Marian Hossa had 1 assist
Tomas Kopecky did nothing

by bleep bloop on Feb 18, 2010 1:41 AM CST reply actions

Though I guess it’s more accurate to say “former Red Wings prospects” for Blatak and Fleischmann.
