Game Thread: Sweden/Belarus, Czech Republic/Latvia, Finland/Germany
Game one: Belarus vs. Sweden 3:00 p.m. ET
Sweden struggled against a strong German team but how will they bounce back against Belarus? Johan Franzen was a virtual non-factor but may be worked into the action more today against Belarus. Henrik Zetterberg and Peter Forsberg had some chemistry last time out and may be able to continue that. Belarus is fairly weak and Sweden should be able to get their game back on track.
Red Wings involved:
SWE: Niklas Kronwall, Nicklas Lidstrom, Johan Franzen, and Henrik Zetterberg.
BEL: Sergei Kolosov (Grand Rapids)
Game two: Czech Republic vs. Latvia 7:30 p.m. ET
Latvia limps in to tonight's game following a 8-2 loss to Russia. They get another tough test tonight in the Czech Republic. The Czechs beat their former countrymen Slovakia 3-1 and have a very solid line up top to bottom. Expect another big loss for Latvia.
No Red Wings involved.
Game three: Finland vs. Germany 12:00 AM ET
Finland putting a beating on Belarus but faces a much tougher German team tonight. Finland has some great scoring talent and one of the best in net but Germany played a solid game against Sweden and could very easily do the same. Valtteri Filppula scored for Finland last time out and let's hope he does the same.
Red Wings involved:
FIN: Valtteri Filppula

Oh, I’m watching the thread to see what’s happening, but I’m at work so I can’t really watch the game. I imagine there are a few people in this situation.
that sucks. The game times weren’t planned well… odd times. Even when in Canada hockey gets the shaft. Figures.

And..
Crosby gets all the prime-time games. Does Buttman have a hand in everything nowadays?

Eh, with so many games to play they had to schedule some of them in the afternoon. It does such that I haven’t had a chance to see a US game yet though. On Sunday that will change.
And I did get to see Sweden play last time since that was at night.
Hey its worked out for me
So I ain’t complaining. They come on while I’m at work. What better time to watch hockey!
just got home and checked the score
See we’re up 2-0. Are we looking pretty good?
(By “we” meaning Sweden, of course.) :)

dammit NBC
Have they been missing the first minute after coming back from commercial the entire tournament?
And someone stick a dirty sweatsock in Pierre’s mouth to shut him up.
"While there's life, there's hope." --Cicero
Does Kronwall have some kind of ‘soul patch’ thing going? He looks different.

First ever Olympic goal. He was very smiley about it.

33 for Sweden
Whoever he is, he’s annoying me. Because of the number I keep expecting him to be much faster than he is, and it bugs me. :D
"While there's life, there's hope." --Cicero
Gustavsson is actually little? Huh, I wouldn’t have expected that.
by crperreau on Feb 19, 2010 3:08 PM CST via mobile reply actions
I think he's tall
But really stringy and lanky. The padding takes care of that, of course.
"While there's life, there's hope." --Cicero
That’s what they said. Listed 181 but that’s really generous. He wishes he weighed that much.

and hopefully
Drop one of those big granite stones on your fingers.
"While there's life, there's hope." --Cicero
Any time a player, but especially one in yellow, goes down I cringe and wait anxiously for them to get back up. I do not want to see anyone get hurt.
by crperreau on Feb 19, 2010 3:16 PM CST via mobile reply actions
me too
A bit ago I yelled “don’t hurt Hank! Wings need him!”
"While there's life, there's hope." --Cicero
Franzen and Kronner both went down at different points and I was shouting at the TV for them to “Get back up!Right now!” I’ve had mental images of them staying down- ugh.

Hey, Sweden!
Stop giving the puck to Forsberg, the doofus just keeps turning it over.
Sweden looks more cohesive than in their first game. I like Lundqvist (sp) in goal more than Gustaffson (sp), though. He seems a bit less scrambly, somehow.
"While there's life, there's hope." --Cicero
Yeah, I think Forsberg is dragging Z down. I’d also like to see Lids and Kronner get a bit more ice time.
Forsberg just basically said his foot is hurting. Can’t Z have healthy linemates?

His nickname isn’t Mule because he’s an awful skater, you idiot. There are other, more positive reasons.
by crperreau on Feb 19, 2010 3:23 PM CST via mobile reply actions
I hit mute
Is that what the jackass said? He’s nicknamed “Mule” because he’s strong and works hard.
"While there's life, there's hope." --Cicero
“I don’t know why they call him Mule, he’s not that bad of a skater” or something close to that. The nickname isn’t derogatory- we’d never keep using it if it was.
by crperreau on Feb 19, 2010 3:31 PM CST via mobile up reply actions
sad
And there are so many people who they could ask, because there are a ton of his teammates around who could answer and Steve Yzerman could give the account right from the horse’s mouth.
Lazy. Pure lazy.
"While there's life, there's hope." --Cicero
Look at the announcing crew. Sadly it doesn’t surprise me. Not only could they ask, isn’t it sort of obvious? Find his good qualities- they can be sort of attributed to a Mule. Hence the nickname. They really aren’t that intelligient, though (the announcers, not mules).
by crperreau on Feb 19, 2010 3:43 PM CST via mobile up reply actions
Intelligent*
Not intelligient. I think I need to fix that on the automatic word fill. Why auto fill a word wrong? Haha
by crperreau on Feb 19, 2010 3:46 PM CST via mobile up reply actions
Speaking of announcers
Doc Emrick (sp) looks like a giant alien bug, but he has a decent sense of pacing and pronounces the names very well, no matter how odd they are. I really wish he would stop using bizarre word choices though.
"While there's life, there's hope." --Cicero
Kronwall’d!
And then Belarus scores. Ugh
by crperreau on Feb 19, 2010 3:48 PM CST via mobile reply actions
ruh-roh
This is going to be quite a finish.
And 33 was on the ice for Sweden. I’ve decided he has gone beyond annoying and now I don’t like him, for no real reason.
"While there's life, there's hope." --Cicero
Irrational sports hate. A phenomenon common amongst all sports fans.
by crperreau on Feb 19, 2010 3:52 PM CST via mobile up reply actions
not hate really
For me it’s just annoyance.
When I have sports hate, I have reasons for it. :)
"While there's life, there's hope." --Cicero
That’s a better way of putting it. I suppose hate is kind of a strong word for it.
by crperreau on Feb 19, 2010 4:01 PM CST via mobile up reply actions
For anybody interested in sports multi-tasking today
The White Sox pulled their offer for Damon today. And Boras is still demanding more out of the Tigers who are the ONLY bidder for his services.
Seems to me he thinks he’s in the driver’s seat when he clearly isn’t any longer.
with a lever long enough
And a place to stand, a man may be able to move the moon – but with no leverage it’s like pushing a rope.
"While there's life, there's hope." --Cicero
nice game
Frantic finish, excellent effort by Belarus. They should be very proud.
"While there's life, there's hope." --Cicero
Does that mean Mule had the GWG? Not that they really matter in the Olys but still.
by crperreau on Feb 19, 2010 4:02 PM CST via mobile reply actions
punch him in the mouth, JR!
You know you want to. Doooooo iiiiiiiiiit! :D
"While there's life, there's hope." --Cicero
I only have one wish
That Pierre McGuire never say Mule’s name again. It’s Fr-AH-nzen, not Fr-annn-zen, idiot.
Back off man, I'm a scientist

I just picked up my new glasses today, love my new prescription, and have already gotten a bunch of compliments on my new frames. :)
Good morning to the hockey night shift.

maybe when the Olympics are over
Filppula can bring some of the Finnish functioning power play mojo with him.
"While there's life, there's hope." --Cicero
You guys are around..I’ve been in and out all night waiting for someone to show up. I can’t believe I’m still awake.
I can go along with that
Go Finland! I have no attachment to Germany.

sportsmanship?
Or their arms are getting tired from shooting.
"While there's life, there's hope." --Cicero
the middle game was fun to watch
Even without any Wings. I have become a fan of 17 for Latvia, Aleksandrs Nizivijs – small, quick, scrappy, like the Latvian Martin St. Louis. Noticeable all the time all over the ice.
"While there's life, there's hope." --Cicero
the Latvians have some of the awesomest names
Girts Ankipans
Kaspars Daugavins
Arvids Rekis
Martins Cipulis
It makes Karlis Skrastins seem so pedestrian.

Ah, hi, random new follower!
I rarely use it though, except to complain about my clumsiness and resulting injuries or to bother Petrella.
At some point I should start bothering to actually post pointless comments on Twitter. Right now I’m just using it more as a news feed.
But then again, I lurked on blogs for months before I felt comfortable enough to comment.

let me think
Baroque97. The name is pretty common outside of hockey, so I went with my favorite number.
"While there's life, there's hope." --Cicero
I don't blame him
He’s 21 now, can drink in the US, has a full-time job that he is serious about, all the other things that mark someone as an adult and a time for leaving behind the silly nicknames you had as a kid.
"While there's life, there's hope." --Cicero
Plus the guy has never really been a ‘kid’. He was brought up his whole life to do this, basically. I wouldn’t want to be known as something way younger than I really am either.
Of course NBC missed like 30 seconds of the game
Fuch the commercials
At least this time we didn’t miss a goal
it makes them look like bloody amateurs
I hate it just as much as missing the first period for curling. NBC is so crappy at covering Olympics.
"While there's life, there's hope." --Cicero
Okay, I really can't stay up
Going home, hoping for third period Filppula goal.
Good night people, enjoy the game.
good night
Or morning, actually. Seems like a safe lead – 3-0, just 13 minutes left, and Filppula the only carrier of the Red Wings blown leads virus. :)

How can someone with such a bald head grow such a mustache?

5-0 Finland final
No Filppula goals, but his team looks extremely solid.
Sweden might be in trouble on Sunday.
