Game Thread: Finland vs. Sweden

Zetter Olympics

Zetter Olympics

Comments seemed to be getting a little slow so here's a clean slate for you all to comment during the game.

Recycled preview:

Finland vs. Sweden, 12:00 a.m. ET

Nothing like this age-old rivalry between the Finns and Swedes. The Finns might have the edge this year though as the Swedes are struggling against the same teams that Finland is blowing out. It's a shame that a game this good comes on so late (in the Detroit timezone at least) and consider it involves 5 of the Red Wings sent to the Olympics, it's a good game to watch all the Detroit stars. Nevertheless, the game goes on regardless of timezone and should be one heck of a game.

Sweden takes on long-time rival Finland in the last game of a day full of excellent games. Henrik Zetterberg, Nicklas Lidstrom, Niklas Kronwall and Johan Franzen join Team Sweden as they face Valtteri Filppula and Finland.

Puck drops at 12:00 a.m. ET so get your coffee and energy drinks ready and enjoy the game!

aahhhh ...

That fresh new thread smell.

Let’s see how long I can stay up for the late game. If it’s as close as the other two today it will be easier.

the giant blob is approaching

Oh, no! Scary Doppler radar picture!

My area is predicted to have 4 to 6 inches by evening, so hopefully I won’t have to shovel myself out to go to work. It’s easier if I park across the street and then clear out my driveway so I can park after work.

I'd have to pay someone

And usually it isn’t a problem – that’s why I don’t have a snowblower. The first time I would have needed it was last week, because the rest of the time it was only a couple inches at a time at most.

If it is too piled up I just call in to work and let them know it will take me a little while to dig out.

Am I supposed to be rooting for the Swedes?

Maybe I should root for the Finns. Because Filppula must feel lonely.
Oh well, I’ll just root for the Detroit players. To Hell with the results.

by Gander on Feb 21, 2010 10:45 PM CST reply actions

I'm torn, too

I like Nick and Nik and Hank and Mule very much, but I also like Filppula – and Sweden did win gold last Olympics …

I want it to be a good game. The other two wound up the way I wanted, so I can’t complain.

Check out Detroit4Lyfe

Because they have all 9 points available, and if the other teams have fewer than that …

by Baroque on Feb 21, 2010 11:32 PM CST up reply actions

based on the standings

both Sweden and Finland have 6 points. By my math (which really can’t ever be trusted), if they go into OT and fail to earn 3 points, the US has the #1 seed. But I could be wrong. Is it just a shootout that gives a 2/1 split?

Check out Detroit4Lyfe

As long as Sweden wins by less than 6, we should be ok.

Check out Detroit4Lyfe

by handsomerob1 on Feb 21, 2010 11:39 PM CST up reply actions

I think you're right

The tiebreaker is goals differential I think so if Finland wins in regulation they get 1 seed because they have kicked major power play butt. Otherwise the US is number 1.

by Baroque on Feb 21, 2010 11:41 PM CST up reply actions

Both are +9

going into this last game. So currently, Finland is +8, but that doesn’t matter since they’re losing. Sweden is only +4, so a 6-goal win gives them the #1 seed. Probably won’t happen, so let’s go Sweden!
