Overflow thread: Kings/Wings
Wings have blown a 3 goal lead and knotted up at 3 heading into the third and final period, which team will emerge?
The one from the 1st period or the lazy one from the 2nd period.

Rather have the win
Both would be swell, though

LA feed thinks Kings are doing well because Heidi took her RED sweater off
stop bothering the poor girl and let her wear the red awesomeness.
what jackasses
I can’t even see the feed and I hope she goes up and kicks them in the nads for being pervs during the intermission.

I went to read Blue Jays news to make me feel better. Then I read who we’re platooning for first base and I got even sadder.

Filppula with the obvious
“They were better in the second period.”
Silly question, Trev.
"While there's life, there's hope." --Cicero
Thing about that period that sucked the most is just the standing around by the guys. the first and third goals were just players standing there not attacking the puck
Didn't they geet blown up by Colorado later?

I refuse to watch. I cried that night.

well, on the bright side
Just 20 minutes of effort and this might be a win!

Man, the Kings have
5 come from behind wins in their last 8. Of course we were screwed.

they finally have a good team for a change
Sucking for a few years can pay off eventually.
"While there's life, there's hope." --Cicero
The Wings just laid back and let the Kings give it to them.
Ive said it once and I’ll say it again….. I love you Larry Murphy.
we need the full two points here
i know that’s an obvious statement but the full two points ties us with Calgary before the Wings play STL
Wow, we only have 12 shots this game.
Seriously, what the hell is the matter with us.

Shades of Pittsburgh, ugh.
I want to vomit. That may be the lingering effects of food poisoning, or because of how bad they are.

I think that does it.
With Eaves gone, we officially are completely screwed.
by eight_legged_freaks on Feb 6, 2010 4:56 PM CST reply actions
what's wrong with Eaves?
was he knocked into the boards? i vaguely remember that, but that’s about it…
Yeah...
Unless we’re thinking of separate incidents, it was DEFINITELY Miller that was hurt blocking a shot.
by Michael Petrella on Feb 6, 2010 4:58 PM CST up reply actions
Oh, it's both of them
I am still glad Ville is gone.
blocked a shot with his foot
I’m calling broken foot, because that would be just like this season.
"While there's life, there's hope." --Cicero
All right, if both those guys are out long term
We have to make a trade, because this is ridiculous.

with a puck to the foot
It seems to be more damaging than anything else.
"While there's life, there's hope." --Cicero
Let me get this straight
We end the second period giving up 3 goals and lose Homer, Eaves, and Miller. Maybe we should have just skipped the second.
would have been in a better position
if they just conceded the three goals and told LA that they could start the third period tied.
"While there's life, there's hope." --Cicero

It won't be as bad as the CHicago game I went to.
Holy shit, our top line was Bert-Dats-Homer. Needless to say, we sucked,
by eight_legged_freaks on Feb 6, 2010 5:03 PM CST up reply actions
We seriously need to trade for someone.
Like, there’s just nothing left if all these guys are gone for a long time.
by eight_legged_freaks on Feb 6, 2010 5:02 PM CST reply actions
let's not get ahead of ourselves
who knows the extent of the injuries at this point. Eaves foot could just be swollen too badly to put the skate on, swelling could go down etc.
You should NEVER take the skate off
Unless, of course, it’s super serious. But I broke eight toes in boots. You just suck it up and finish the game because once that boot comes off, you’re done for the day. HAHA
by Michael Petrella on Feb 6, 2010 5:06 PM CST up reply actions
their only option though
Is to play the young guys from the Griffins, or trade the Griffins for other guys for now.
I’d honestly rather see them play the young guys.
"While there's life, there's hope." --Cicero
I’d rather pull an Oilers when they traded for Nedved to try to make the playoffs. Why not? At this point, we need something.
by eight_legged_freaks on Feb 6, 2010 5:04 PM CST up reply actions
And lose all the young players that the team wants to introduce into the lineup for the next few years?
If they can’t stay healthy it doesn’t matter, they likely are done in the first round anyway, so if you are going to have a quick exit and an early offseason you may as well not trade away the depth you will be counting on for the next few years, but take advantage of the extra six weeks, get everyone healthy, and come back in the fall ready to start a new season.
Just making the playoffs isn’t worth being crappy for the following years.

34%? I’d say that’s high. I’d put us more like, at 12%, especially with Dallas winning. We’re drafting high this year guys, that’s all I can see as a positive.

great idea
Suck for years and get high draft picks just like the Penguins, the model NHL franchise, getting enough high picks to actually get enough fan attention to bludgeon the city into building a new rink or they would move.
"While there's life, there's hope." --Cicero
I'm not questioning their character
Sometimes luck and injuries just work against you, and this might just not be the Wings year. I’m not going to sit here and say that they don’t care enough, because I’m sure this isn’t fun for any of them.
They want to win plenty, I’m sure, but haven’t been at full strength really until the playoffs last year before the finals. Play an extra six months over a few years and it takes a toll.
"While there's life, there's hope." --Cicero
That's nice and all, but it doesn't cut it here
We had a three goal lead. It evaporated. They flat out don’t try once they have the smallest lead. They deserve to be in the doghouse.
by eight_legged_freaks on Feb 6, 2010 5:28 PM CST up reply actions
yup. its all adding up.
And they no longer dominate out there. Every game last year, opponents were on their heels as the Wings took the puck up ice. This year there’s just no domination out there. I can’t quite attribute it to anything in particular…
they can't afford to have all the best players they want to keep
Other teams have improved with good draft picks, they have taken advantage of the salary cap to pick up talent from other teams – seriously, if it was just a matter of money, would Hossa be a Hawk now? Or even Quincey with whichever team he was last traded to?
The poor teams have improved a bit, and the best of the teams have been beaten down to closer to the same level. From the time the NHL decided that the holy grail of profitability and popularity was parity and that dominant teams were an affront to that, this outcome was inevitable.
"While there's life, there's hope." --Cicero
It shouldn’t exist to handicap well run franchises. The Hawks are a circus of an organization, yet somehow they come out on top.
by eight_legged_freaks on Feb 6, 2010 5:34 PM CST up reply actions
for how long?
Last year they made the playoffs, this year they are probably a legit Cup contender, but next year? What if they miss the playoffs next year because of injury and needing to jettison talent that will cost them too much under the cap?
And shouldn’t is a different matter than what is, unfortunately. Dominant franchises have been declared boring – every fan believing their team has a chance is the way to have a successful league, in their minds.
"While there's life, there's hope." --Cicero
that's what I think, too
And why I almost expected them to figure out how to get Kovalchuk as a rental, because this is the perfect opportunity for them, and who knows when they will get such an opportunity again.
"While there's life, there's hope." --Cicero
I think the cost would’ve been their grit. Barker, Versteeg, grinders like that would have done more damage than losing Kovalchuk. They know the playoffs ae a defensive slugfest, and especially in the West, they would have been boned without their gritty forwards.
by eight_legged_freaks on Feb 6, 2010 5:41 PM CST up reply actions
Yeah
I mean, baseball is a wash every year. My Jays have no hope of competing against the Red Sox AND the Yankees. It’s impossible. I’m just saying, there has to be a better way than making the best teams suck so that teams no one cares about (Phoenix, Atlanta, Florida, Nashville, etc) can have a shot at winning.
by eight_legged_freaks on Feb 6, 2010 5:39 PM CST up reply actions
I know
I wish I knew the answer. With 30 teams in a league it’s likely that each one will average about three titles per century, so all it takes is a few teams better run than others, or luckier, and they will win more than “their share” and leave other teams with Cubs-like droughts.

Don’t know what else we can do. They’ve got to find a way to get that mental edge back, knowing they are better than this.

maybe
And it might be for the best for the team not to get beat to hell for another few weeks or months and let a few other teams deal with the injuries and putting off surgery instead of getting problems taken care of and getting a good start on the rehab so they don’t come to training camp still recovering.

"While there's life, there's hope." --Cicero
Wonder why an LA King fan would either
a) voice some support for the Anaheim Ducks, considering there’s supposed to be some “geographical rivalry” down there.
b) have reason to trash the Red Wings, seeing as how the Wings were the victims of one of the Kings greatest playoff victiroies.
by FloridaownsFSU on Feb 6, 2010 5:52 PM CST up reply actions
When did the Red Wings
become the NHL that is at risk of blowing every damned multi-goal lead they have?
I’m not saying this to be a jerk, I honestly am amazed that the Wings, a team that has been amongst the league’s elite for over a decade, has become a team that screams of unreliability.
when they lost 3 players during the course of the game
It’s a lot to do with an inconsistent line-up in my mind.
same here
They have had players in and out all year, and just when they really start to look good, either someone else gets hurt, or someone who has been hurt re-enters the lineup – and in either case, it knocks everything out of whack.
"While there's life, there's hope." --Cicero
another one
down the drain but a bit more painful with 3 goals and 3 downed players, least we get Franzey back next game.
Anyone else think
That if Anaheim does make the number eight spot, San Jose is headed for yet another first round exit?
"While there's life, there's hope." --Cicero
Circa last year?
Maybe not. Depends if the Ducks are as tough without Pronger in the line-up.

thing is they have Hiller
And with the Sharks history, if they fall behind they will turn their sticks into whatever the composite equivalent of sawdust is.

"While there's life, there's hope." --Cicero
Of course
San Jose always chokes. Unfortunately, because I would be rooting for them because I have a deep, insatiable hatred for the Ducks. Ugh.
I could readily foresee the Wings beat the Sharks too
if that matchup came about.
Seeing as how, you know, the Wings have beaten the Sharks all 3 times they’ve met this year. I don’t even have to factor in that San Jose is one of the most prominent playoff disaster clubs in the sport.
