Jimmah with a shot at the Vezina?
Hey, all along, we've been saying, "look out, ol' Tiberius has a shot at grabbing some hardware at the end of the season," he's been playing solidly, and maybe there's an outside chance that he pulls down the Calder Trophy for best rookie in the NHL. That in itself would be a pretty sweet trick, as no Red Wing has grabbed that trophy since Roger Crozier won it in 1965. But I hadn't heard any speculation whatsoever past that point.
Taking a peek at the ESPN.com recap for tonight's game, an outcome I can't quite wrap my head around (a scoreless tie? Following by Jimmy Howard stopping ~10 shootout shots to earn a shootout in the 11th round? For serious?), I notice a sidebar, with a thought from Scott Burnside that Howard might actually be in the discussion about the Vezina Trophy.
It's worth a read, even if I don't think anything will come of that speculation. Burnside goes as far to say that, hey, Ryan Miller is getting attention as a potential HART Trophy candidate, why not Howard as well? I'm not anywhere nearing that stance, just passing on some speculation from the ESPN page.
But it has been interesting to see how our collective response to Jimmy Howard has changed over the past few weeks of post Olympic play. Now to see if any of our breathen will bite on the rumors mentioned by Rosenthal, and whether we might see a couple of Howard for Hart posts show up on WiiM.

While it would be great if he were nominated (let’s be honest here, he’s be in the top 5 this season, goalie wise), I would be upset if he won because he doesn’t deserve it. Calder? Sure. But not the Vezina, not yet. That trophy is Ilya Bryzgalov’s. The only way he loses it is if the East Conference do their usual and pick their best goalie and every GM vote for that one goalie, likely Ryan Miller. But Ilya Bryzgalov is, in my opinion, far and away the Vezina winner this season.
I completely agree with you except for the fact that Howard has a serious chance of getting nominated for the Calder,Vezina and Hart trophies.
Winning 3 of 3 – no,
Getting nominated – Yes
He has a damn good shot at winning the Calder, and I’d be surprised if he didn’t, to be honest.
But the Vezina? I doubt he’ll get nominated, though it is possible. Ryan Miller and Ilya Bryzgalov are the top two without a doubt, and Bryzgalov is my personal top pick to win it all. Then you have the usual suspects, too, in Brodeur, Nabakov, Luongo, and Kipprusoff (though the Flames not making the playoffs will kill his chances), all have an outside chance of winning. Not to mention two other newcomers in Craig Anderson and Jonathan Quick. Howard is in the mix, don’t get me wrong, but with 6 or so other goalies vying for that final spot (assuming that Miller and Bryzgalov have already secured the first two spots), I don’t like his chances for that nomination.
And the Hart? The Hart has only been won by a goalie seven times, and only 3 times since the 60’s. If a goalie gets nominated this year, I’d put money on it being Bryzgalov, simply for being instrumental in turning Phoenix around after the disaster that was last summer. Miller might have a shot if the league wants to honor him in some way for what he did in the Olympics, but it has to be Bryzgalov in my books with the other two spots easily being Ovechkin and Crosby/Sedin. Howard really has no chance for this one, especially when the majority of the nation thinks that any goalie in Detroit will do amazing simply because we always have the top defense (and, let’s be honest, they can generally make that case. However, not this season)

Nominated....but likely heading home empty handed
Jimmy is in speculation for a Calder and is probably the only one he really has a shot at. I say keep it…Jimmy seems more focused on the team hardware and achievements. Ryan Miller may very well clean up big in the individual awards even though I think Bryzgalov probably deserves the Vezina a lil bit more. But as another post said….East seems to pick one goalie and push them to the forefront even though theres a handful of West goalies more deserving. Either way,he just needs to keep it going strong keep building that confidence and keep crybaby crosby off Z’s back…I agree with what Mickey said postgame saturday….Jimmy is earning the respect of the guys and showing he wants to lead this team
I agree. Tiberius (greatest nickname ever, by the way) has his focus where it matters and will walk away with what matters if he has his way. The Sabres stand no chance in the playoffs. They’re too weak defensively besides Miller. 7 games against Ovechkin and Semin or Malkin and Crosby? Yeah, don’t think so. The Coyotes are the team to watch out for, but they don’t have the experience on the team to do it. Jimmy, though, is leading his team to the playoffs for the 19th straight season and possibly another division title when people had written us out of that race two and a half months ago. Forget the Vezina and Hart (and even Calder). I’ll take the Cup any day of the week instead.

I think Howie will not win the Vezina in my eyes he should be one of the top 3 vote getters.
But i think Miller will win it and Bryzgalov will be a very close second . Howie plays on a great team so it will hurt him .
You know the same way Osgood gets dissed even after he won his second cup people still discounted how great he played . And the last cup he worked his tail off and made some unreal saves but still he had a great team in frount of him they claim
Show me the CUP
Thing is, the Red Wings were NOT a great team this year
Howard may well be responsible for the rebound in Detroit’s fortunes this year. I for one don’t think Ozzie would have the Red Wings in position for a playoff berth.

I saw that Burnside article
I’m not sure if it has been done, but I heavily doubt a rookie goaltender would ever take the Hart. That said, his body of work is clearly in the latter part of the year and when voters look back at the entire year, it includes the part where he wasn’t all that great, giving up monster rebounds and such. I honestly don’t even think he’ll win the Calder.
Of the 7 times a goalie has won the Hart, none of have been rookies. I can’t even remember the last time a rookie goalie was nominated (though Mason was nominated for the Vezina last year, right?)

Have some faith Wings faithful. Whereas, there is probably not a shot at him winning the Hart or Vezina he should at least get a nomination for the latter. That being said this looks to be a year that a goalie will secure the Calder. Howie and Tukka Rask have both had amazing rookie campaigns and that hasn’t necessarily been true for the rookie position players. I believe the top pt scorers in the rookies are somewhere in the 50pt range and the league leaders are around 100. That being said you won’t be having any rookie position players in descussion for anything other than the Calder. I would give Jimmy the edge over Tukka being that even though Tukka’s numbers are better he still has played in far less games and Jimmy has been a real testament to the wings playoff push. The award like any end of the year award should be for the player most valuable to his team. That being said Calder = Jimmy.
Way to go on his part from being seen as this guy wasting away in Grand Rapids with maybe a shot at getting the backup position to suddenly becoming Tiberius the redeamer of the Wings season.
