Around SBN: Despite Relocation Drama, Coyotes Overcome Adversity

First round schedule

The NHL released the first round schedule last night and the Wings will begin play on Wednesday.

Wednesday, April 14 at Phoenix, 10:00 p.m. TSN, VERSUS
Friday, April 16 at Phoenix, 10:00 p.m. TSN, VERSUS
Sunday, April 18 at Detroit, 3:00 p.m. NBC, TSN
Tuesday, April 20 at Detroit, 6:30 p.m. TSN
*Friday, April 23 at Phoenix, 10:00 p.m. TSN, VERSUS
*Sunday, April 25 at Detroit, 2:00 p.m. NBC, TSN
*Tuesday, April 27 at Phoenix, TBD TSN

Two things stick out to me on this. First one is game four in Detroit. Ha, 6:30 p.m. start in Detroit which means a 3:30 p.m. start for those watching from the desert. Second is the TBD game time for game 7. Really? How do you not have that figured out yet?

That's a lot of travel for both teams: 2,000 miles or so from a Friday to Sunday game on two separate occasions. By comparison, the furthest any East coast team has to travel (I think) is 597 miles from Washington to Montreal.

I worry about

the travel. what a pain in the ass for us not being in the east. Im suprised they dont have us starting at 8pm in detroit.. i figured they would have tried to level in out a bit.

Well we wish they cared about the travel…remember last year, having virtually no break between the conference finals in Chicago and the Stanley Cup finals? NHL doesn’t care as long as the tv schedule fits…

If we were in the East

we’d be sitting on, what, like 10 straight Cup finals appearances?

by Rob Rogacki on Apr 12, 2010 7:13 PM CDT up reply actions

Why can’t the games out west be on the weekends. Then they would afternoon games. Also, do the games NEED to start at 10pm?? That means the games still won’t start til around 10:20. Start them at 9:30 or 9.

I love it. The Coyotes fans are starting a movement to throw rubber snakes out on the ice in response to the octopus. It never ceases to amaze me how unoriginal these upstart team’s fans are. The reason they want to do this is because they don’t have tradition and want to start something. Just for once… try something original. The throwing a creature out on the ice is a Red Wing tradition, anything else is just imitation, not originality. Also, rubber snakes would be SO easy to get into an arena that it would just be a Florida rat fiasco all over again. That is what should be penalty worthy for the home team, not a Zamboni driver swinging ONE octopus around. It’s teams like this that ruin actual traditions.

Agreed

They won’t have a team there next year anyway.

beware

Last night Travis Hair at fiveforhowling.com in the comments thread of a post called “Adopt the Coyotes” was calling for Coyotes fans to physically assault anyone they see wearing Red Wings gear at the games at Glendale arena.

He’s since deleted those comments, but they were there. Perhaps one of SB Nation’s lawyers pointed out the liability problem. But Hair cannot un-say it.

Be careful there, folks.

yeah i saw that too

and some Blues goons were commenting on that as well…i live on the other side of the country so i have no worries

I won't be going

but I’d like to thing that I could without having to worry about being assaulted. Profoundly, irresponsible move by Hair. He’s now claiming he was “joking”.

by voline on Apr 12, 2010 4:16 PM CDT up reply actions

yeah that is nothing

to joke about…everybody takes there “joking” to far when it comes to the Wings…so much hatred from everybody with the “scum” and “fuck detroit” all that crap…douches

Expect nothing less.

You have to know Travis’ style (or I guess NOT know it) to take that seriously. Definitely isn’t advocating violence against Red Wings fans, he’s not an idiot.

by Casey Richey on Apr 12, 2010 6:41 PM CDT up reply actions

must be it

If you read a blog regularly, you know when the writer is joking or not – problem is in the playoffs there are a lot of people unfamiliar with the writer who don’t know his style and take things more seriously than intended to be.

Best to stay to things that are comical because they are so unlikely, like beating to death with pool noodles – obviously a joke, while just beating someone up isn’t because it does happen. Far too much, unfortunately.

Like hurting a fan of another team actually accomplishes anything but a night in jail. Friendly and borderline unfriendly banter = fun. Physically attacking someone because of a GAME = stupid.

by dewman8810 on Apr 12, 2010 4:57 PM CDT up reply actions

I think that the fact that there will be a bunch of Wings fans there

Will help. It isn’t as though there will only be a handful to attract attention and problems, there will be a large presence. More annoying for the home crowd, more profitable for the home team, and safer for the visiting fans.

Have fun

I went to Game 3 of the WCF here in Chicago last year, and it was both good and bad. For every idiot fan that tried something or said something, someone else apologized for their behaviour.

games 1/2/4/5/7 on FSN too - HD also

Just in case anybody didn’t realize that. I know it’s not yet in my cableco’s guide (WoW).
