I'm recycling, it's good for the environment:
It's that time folks. Playoff hockey is here as the 5th seeded Red Wings head into Phoenix to play the opening game of the Western Conference quarterfinals. The Phoenix crowd plans to have a "white out" but hopefully there are a multitude of Wings fans in attendance to spoil the effect. But aside from the crowd, it comes down to business on the ice more importantly. The Red Wings are one of the hottest teams in the NHL at the moment and are capable of making a deep run in the playoffs. In their way? The surprise success story that is the Phoenix Coyotes. After finishing near the bottom of the league last year and going through the well documented summer ownership struggles, the Coyotes have put all that aside and emerged as the 4th seed in the West. With Ilya Bryzgalov in net and a solid defense led by Zbynek Michalek, the Coyotes play a tight game that the Red Wings will need to adjust to.
Detroit goals so far: Tomas Holmstrom top corner (WHA?) and Nicklas Lidstrom from the point
Phoenix goal: some dude scored on the power play, whatevs.

What's funny is..

That’s why I don’t like the conflict of interest. If the Coyotes advance in the playoffs, they get money from the playoff gate and it goes to their benefit, but the only team disadvantaged is the single team playing them. This is one of the reasons I was hoping for a team other than Phoenix.

Rover was an old position in hockey, in addition to the goalie/forward/defenseman system we know today. He did as the position was called: roamed the ice, playing where necessary at the moment. Old, old position that died off in the 1920s. If you look at the Hall of Fame you’ll see a small list of guys listed as “R” — those are rovers.

That's a big deal to me.
As someone said above, if that gets called the Wings spend four of the last six minutes on the PP. Absolutely could have had a chance to tie in that. Not a great chance (look at the PP rest of the night) but still would have changed how the end of that game went.

Quick thoughts
-Penalty kill. One look at the stat box and you’ll know that’s the story here.
-Keeping the pressure on. Phoenix started getting sporty around the 12-13:00 mark of the 2nd and our adjustments didn’t quite work.
-Jimmy Howard had a successful first playoff game. Yes, he let in three goals from a statistical standpoint. However he was brilliant at other times.

Lilja was in the box for the second PK but that shouldn’t be an excuse. There was absolutely no excuse for the other two. That first PK? It was awful. Faceoff won, pass, shoot, goal.

I’ll definitely take a split. But the game reminded me far too much of the way last season ended. If we just plain get beat that’s one thing. But when it seems like the team goes into shutdown mode it’s just painful to watch. Hopefully Friday will give us a better idea of what we’re dealing with. And if it was just nerves, then they better shake that shit off soon…please.
