Game Thread: Red Wings vs. Flyers

Detroit Red Wings at Philadelphia Flyers, Apr 4, 2010 11:30 AM CDT

A very busy weekend for the Red Wings concludes as they head to the Wachovia Center to take on the Philadelphia Flyers with the possibility of clinching a playoff spot with a victory.

While the Red Wings seven-game winning streak came to an end in the lost to Nashville yesterday, the 12-game point streak does continue, and the Red Wings are two points behind the Predators with four games to play (and two games in hand).

As Casey mentioned, Detroit will give the start in net to Chris Osgood: his first appearance in net since March 3 against Vancouver and first start since January 27 against Minnesota. In fact: Osgood has not won in regulation since November 3 when he shut out the Boston Bruins in Game 13.

For the Flyers, they're in the eighth playoff spot in the Eastern Conferece, but only because of the tiebreaker over the New York Rangers.

The game is a 12:30 p.m. ET start on NBC. Please comment below.

Enjoy the Easter dinner of ham or turkey or whatnot and remember, if you are hiding REAL eggs, make sure you find every single one of them. :)

Yeah, I remember a friend’s mom making that mistake once. Also the same woman who didn’t bother to hard boil stuff once…we found a couple eggs out in their yard by stepping on them, that was fun.

Go Wings!

Lets go Ozzy, glad to see him get a start and I hope he does great. That way Babcock will have increased faith in him along with most of the Wings nation.

As much as I love Howard, I just miss Ozzie. I don’t want him to go just yet! Go Ozzie!

I know

I wish he played better early in the year so he’d had a few more starts by this time. Kick some Flyer butt, Ozzie (not necessarily literally).

So his butt is probably at perfect kicking level. Not Ozzie’s fault.

we played no defence and he hasnt played in 30 games

We couldnt score in the 3rd. osgood played a good 3rd and gave us a chance to win

maybe

If they can beat Columbus on Wednesday he can play the other Columbus game and Howard can play against Chicago to close out the season.

by dhall25 on Apr 4, 2010 2:10 PM CDT up reply actions

Seriously

You’re not often going to win if you don’t play even most of a game. In the first period, the Wings did not start really trying until they were already down by two goals. In the second period, they did not try at all. And in the third, they continued giving the puck away and not managing to do a whole lot. The Red Wings got shots, but how many of them were actual scoring chances vs. low quality shots from the outside?

If the Red Wings don’t bother to show up when a couple calls go against them, they won’t get past the first round in the playoffs.

by bleep bloop on Apr 4, 2010 2:07 PM CDT reply actions

I don't think this is a trend

they have always sucked on early Sunday games, and the schedule makers did them no favors with yesterday’s game plus travel. They were playing an Eastern conference team in about as meaningless of a game as you can have around this time of the year. I’m ok with dropping this one, if it means we take 5 of the last 6 points.

by Rob Rogacki on Apr 4, 2010 2:10 PM CDT up reply actions

I was thinking the same thing

Afternoon game, travel, earlier afternoon game against desperate opponent = slow start at the least.

If Osgood had played out of his mind, the team might have come back to win or get a point. Playing a little shaky at first and then settling down later, was too tough for them to overcome.

Columbus, Columbus, Chicago – and two more points to clinch a playoff spot.
