Two 5 on 3 goals, one 5 on 4, and one 4 on 3. Pretty easy when the refs are gift wrapping power plays for you. The Cleary slash and Datsyuk crosscheck were the only real penalties on the Wings all game.

We are not losing this series

Not to fucking bullshit games like that. When the refs let the game go, we’ve been the better team. Detroit has to find away to overcome battling the sharks and the refs. Accept the fact they’re going to call a shitload on us, and find a way to overcome it. Nothing else we can do.

I’m wholly unconvinced the better team has a 2-0 lead. Wholly and entirely.

The Officiating tonight nutslayed the Detroit Red Wings giving them a 2-0 series deficit. The Wings will need to nutslay the officials and San Jose Sharks right back starting in game 3 at The Joe.

Changed absolutely everything about that third period

We had total control until Bert’s penalty. And we may have been able to overcome it if it hadn’t gone to a 5-3. We were gassed for the rest of the third. Playing an entire period shorthanded will do that to ya.

Did you guys see Game 3 of the Avs series?

The Dan Boyle blunder game?
Unfortunately for us Sharks fans, that has been closer to the norm this time of year than the exception.
So, excuse me if I do not feel bad for us getting a break or two.
But we are actaully converting our opportunities.
We may be getting a few more of them, but we are making the most of them. and you guys are not to the same extent in either game so far.
In the esteemed history of the Red Wings, to have achieved what they have as often as they have, the Hockey Gods have smiled on you plenty.

1-3 on our PP chances and we killed 8 Pentilties

So ya tonight we did our job the refs just gave the sharks way to many chances its hard not to score when u have 2 5 on 3s and were in the box for the first half of the 3rd.

Point is 16 PP for you guys in 2 games isn’t even funny any more its just sad

by Rwings on May 2, 2010 10:56 PM CDT up reply actions

Again

the Boyle blunder was a break for the Avs. Lidstrom stick breaking was a break for SJ tonight.

Having a parade of phantom, borderline, and once or twice legitimate penalties in the third period of a tight game is not a break. It’s fucking ridiculous.

Don’t get me wrong, I’ve never had much ill-will towards the Sharks. I don’t mind them at all. But they and the zebras are doing everything they can to change my perception of the Sharks. The diving in the first and second was ridiculous, and should have negated most of the PP opportunities they got. They should have been embarrassed by it.

And the third period was surreal. Everything changed after that phantom call on Bertuzzi with 15 minutes to play. That led to the 5-3, eventual game tying goal, and the parade to the box.

All things considered, we’re doing alright on special teams. The unbelievable disparity does not constitute a “break.” It constitutes officiating ineptitude.

Long Rant

I have no idea what to say about these refs this series or the NHL in general. Tonight was a joke Detroit should have won both of these games yet are sitting down 0-2. This shit their calling hockey is a joke. My love for the game and for the Red Wings is probally enough to watch atleast one more game if you can even call the last 2 things games. Their is no reason you can get away with calling 14Penilties 10 of which against one team. I complain about the refs but after this game what else can u possibly say about the refs were a joke and if the NHL does not fire every single one of them then I have no hope for the league whats so ever and what ever.

As for the sharks I had at one point had a load of respect for the team I made jokes in the past about them chocking in the playoffs but only because it was a common theme. But besides that I thought the orgination was ok. But after just 2 games I have nothing but ill will towards a punch of people who give hockey players a bad name to the game and to sportsmanship. DIving every fucking time a wings player is near you is not how you should be or more importantly want to win a hockey game. The sharks team isn’t even in the same league as the Red Wings I don’t think in a real hockey game where they don’t dive they could even beat our AHL team. Their version of hockey is horrible and has no plays in the NHL let alone the playoffs

by Rwings on May 2, 2010 9:57 PM CDT reply actions

If you love the game and the red wings, you're going to keep watching.

That is all.

Yeah, the refs were shitty tonight, but they’ve been shitty the other way in our favor before. And if you don’t believe me, ask other teams’ fans.

It’s the NHL, and that’s the way it is. For better or for worse.

So yeah, get pissed off. And then wake up tomorrow and realize that the officiating sucks for everybody. We just got the sharp end of the stick tonight.

Screw that.

I love the game and the Wings, and I will not be watching. Not the Wings, or anybody. I’m tired of investing my time, energy, and emotions to be constantly frustrated and disappointed by circumstances outside of the players.

These playoffs had me more excited than any in a decade. I’ve been holed up in my house and watched almost every game of the playoffs for every team so far and it’s been disgusting to see how fucking horrible the officiating is league-wide. It has whittled away my desire to support this league anymore. The NHL is about to lose this lifelong fan for ignoring the glaring inconsistencies in their own system, and praising themselves for making it better.

by Brion on May 2, 2010 10:20 PM CDT up reply actions

I'm sorry

The refs were shitty, don’t get me wrong, but this was nothing the sharks did. Players dive, a bit. The wings dive, a bit (yes, really. Go read our postgames from game 1 for some examples, if you really care). The sharks dive, a bit.

The refs tonight were twitchy with the whistle. 10-4 is bad, but when 3 of the 4 called against the sharks were crap (Heatley’s interference was ridiculous), I think the judgment you need to be making is not that the sharks are terrible, but that the refs sucked. And they did. And it may have been lopsided, I didn’t see most of the third period. But that doesn’t reflect on the sharks.

by warning on May 2, 2010 10:33 PM CDT up reply actions

i think the heatley interference call was a bit of a make-up call. but by then the damage was already done and the wings were on their heels. and the whole concept of make-up calls is just wrong imho. the NHl should just hire refs that arent legally blind

yeah

thats what i mean by needing refs that can actually see

by openwindow on May 2, 2010 10:54 PM CDT up reply actions

Just saying that

Doesn’t change the effect those BS calls had. Marleau’s phantom roughing was not as game-altering as the phantom Bertuzzi penalty that led to a 5-3. And although there were BS calls both ways, that doesn’t change the fact that the disparity between the amount of BS calls made was huge. To call 10 penalties on the second least penalized team in the regular season makes no sense. Do the refs really think the Wings are suddenly playing dirty? That now they’ve completely changed their game?

Plus, the BS Heatley interference only negated an already BS call. It didn’t actually give the Wings a full PP. The only way 10 penalties should ever be called on a single team is if that team is playing recklessly and at risk of injuring folks. We’ve played the Ducks a lot in recent post-seasons, and I don’t remember that dirty team ever racking up 10 penalties. This was just…wow…there are no words for this game.

by Brobz on May 2, 2010 11:46 PM CDT up reply actions

Diving is just bad

I hated it when Howard did it and I hated it when the sharks did it 5 times its not sportsmanship and it doesn’t belong in hockey. And yes 2 of the 4 calls against the Sharks were bad, but so were 8 of the 10 against the wings, since most wouldn’t have happen had not a horrible call been called in the first place.

Sharks dive a lot and get away with it is my point and diving no matter who does it annoys me since that’s not what hockey is.

by Rwings on May 2, 2010 11:01 PM CDT up reply actions

Hate to say it

… but your boys had a mental meltdown in the last two minutes. They completely fucked up when the goalie was pulled by passing the puck back outside the Sharks blueline, again when they took the too many men penalty, and at least three more times when it appeared the whole team forgot they were allowed to ice the puck on the PK which would have enabled a long shoot-in. They kept trying to pass it up ice in the usual way, and very badly at that. They came withion an ace of a second, too-many men penalty along the way. It was a fire drill all the way around.

I’ll be the first to say they got screwed by the refs, but the team has to keep its composure, especially when they still have a chance to win. That endgame was ugly ugly ugly.

Yeah, but those 2 minutes were nothing like the other 58.

You used to have to kill someone to have to go down 5-on-3, the Sharks have 3 in two games? Post-lockout reffing result in more offense, but pre-lockout was a better product when penalties typically alternated and were called when a real scoring chance was prevented by one.

weeeeeellllllll

ok so I’m from the Sharks side of things and I can certainly admit that the officiating was really bad at best and a lot of the penalties to the wings were undeserved. The goalie interference calls were especially terrible. Having said that, you have to admit that the boarding call to Patty was rediculous, as was the goalie interference to Heater. Hockey is hockey and bad calls will be made on both sides. Part of the game is getting past that. It’s gonna be an interesting series and it is in no way over. Nice to get the win, though I would have liked the officiating to be better so there wouldn’t be as much reason for saying it wasn’t a fair game. See ya in Detroit

There are bads calls then there are WTF calls.

There are no words in existence to describe the calls in this series. Hell, I consider 5 penalties in one game high for most teams. The Red Wings need to make a statement in Detroit with a pair of dominate wins at least by 3 goals in each game.

by Idle Drifter on May 2, 2010 11:11 PM CDT reply actions

unfortunately

I still think the sharks probably have enough talent to win a game or two from the wings without help from the refs. the problem is, they haven’t had to do this yet and we’ve had trouble winning at home lately. Even if Detroit picks up the next two… I dunno. I think (knock on wood) the officiating probably can’t get any worse and things will even out over time which I hate to say but I think means a legit SJS win or two.

You have my sympathies...

Avs fan here coming off a series of the EXACT SAME BS. I can’t think of a single team in the NHL that deserves an ass kicking more than the Sharks right now, but for some reason the refs in this league are determined not to let that happen.

I’m a hockey fan above all else, and I was hoping that other teams (yes, even the wings) would be spared this freaking shit. Guess that’s not happening…

Sigh. God help me I can’t believe I’m saying this, but go wings. Normal allegiances be damned, the Sharks deserve to lose.

by TheFightingFarsi on May 2, 2010 11:46 PM CDT reply actions

Um, no

What happened tonight was different. The avs got penalized 2-1 because the sharks were in their zone like 3 times as much. And you get called more in your own zone, because you take more penalties in your own zone.

But the wings aren’t the avs. I don’t care if, as a wings fan, you’re worried about a slant (and yeah, 10-4, there probably was one to some degree, though I still think the wings deserved over half of those penalties). The big picture here is that slant or not, the reffing was atrocious going both directions. Heatley’s and Marleau’s penalties come to mind. And since people complain all the time about slants going towards the red wings, I’m going to make the bold claim that the bigger issue here is that the reffing needs to not be crap. And yes, I recognize that having just got the win, it’s easy to say that. So all this paragraph is really going to say is “can these particular refs not make it to the next round? kthanks.”

Also, I think the sharks deserved this win, but maybe I’m looking through teal-tinted glasses and I don’t really want to argue that.

by warning on May 2, 2010 11:59 PM CDT up reply actions

I don’t think you really deserve anything when you get 10 power play chances…just saying…

by Casey Richey on May 3, 2010 12:08 AM CDT up reply actions

Yeah, that’s the part I didn’t want to argue. I’m going to say that X of the ten were legit and then we get into the exact sort of semantics that lead to people blaming games (normal ones mind you, this oddity aside) on the refs, just because the game-winning goal came off a ref call. Is X really so different from 10, what about when this one thing happened, if the ref hadn’t this, then by some intricate chain of causality, this other thing happens, etc. Not productive arguments.

by warning on May 3, 2010 12:18 AM CDT up reply actions

Agreed.

Shitty officiating going both ways, I really wish the refs woulda just let the boys play. Believe or not Bertuzzi’s penalties annoyed me despite it being a benefit to my team. And of course as a Sharks fan the minutes for Heater and Marleau had me yelling at the tv, so I can sympathize with the frustration of you guys in Detroit.

As far as the Avs go.. ahhh… I’ll withhold harsh words to this Farsi fellow, but I can’t help but laugh. Watching tonight’s game was like watching a clash of the titans. Watching the avs games, specifically when they were taking most of the penalties, was watching one team getting utterly dominated and forced into submission. Some real BDSM action.

Deserved or not deserved? Every goal (save perhaps for Pav’s jab-frenzied second) was clean and the result of skill and hard work. (Dunno if you guys caught that between the legs by Clowe) Even short handed Detroit is a force to be reckoned with.. /shrug .. trying to blame our successes tonight solely on ref’s whistles is pretty ludicrous.

Understandable though, I’d be saying the same thing if we had those numbers of calls.

Next game should be interesting, to say the least. I do hope the officiating improves though so we can just have a good solid hockey that both sides can be happy with.

by D Dawg on May 3, 2010 12:15 AM CDT up reply actions

I've said this elsewhere

but simply saying the officiating was bad both ways (which it was) does not change the disparity in the number of terrible calls. Nor does it change the crucial moments in which terrible calls were made.

If they had called 8 or 9 penalties on the Sharks and this game ended up the same way, I’d be more inclined to say the better team one. Right now, I have no idea, because I haven’t seen these two teams play 5-5 very often. And when they do, the 5-5 is changed by the overarching effects some phantom call had on the flow of the game.

Neither the Sharks nor the Wings play a style that should result in 10 penalties. Bad officiating doesn’t hurt your team nearly as bad when that bad officiating means you’re on the powerful more than twice as often.

by Brobz on May 3, 2010 12:21 AM CDT up reply actions

Brobz hit the nail on the head.

I’ll do my best to stay out of tinfoil hat territory for the next few days, but it’ll be hard. Shitty officiating is one thing, but its effect is doubled when every single call goes against the one team.

Also, while I appreciate the palliative tone of Dawg’s post, I think “hockey that both sides can be happy with” went out the window last night, at least for me. That’s two playoff games—TWO—that we’ve lost now because of dodgy calls. I don’t care who you are, no series should have 25 PPs over two games in the Stanley Cup Playoffs unless they’re friggin shooting each other out there. Like, with guns.

No Limits.
