what the wings need to win

l

Star-divide

to many mistakes (focus)

to soft around the net (physical)

mediokur goaltending /osgood should of replaced howard after game two just like in 2008 when they pulled hasek after losing the first two games and they won the cup.

((((do not get rid of bertuzzi nobody is perfect.he is a good redwing fit)))))

they need a top of the line goalie that only allows 1 to 2 goals a game not 3 to 4 a game

those 3 to 4

goals had alot to do with being hung out to dry… defense not goaltending is the issue.

your blaming the defense

it was both the offensive and defensive players on both ends of the ice making mental mistakes and that doesnt mean that howard has to do the same thing.

Osgood

should not have even been considered for replacing Howard. Howard got the team to the playoffs, he played well and as bond021 said the defense hung him out to dry far too many times. I think it’s hard to pin this thing on Howard

by Casey Richey on May 21, 2010 7:24 AM CDT reply actions

On the other hand

He did allow a few soft goals and getting to the playoffs is not the same as playing in the playoffs.

But by giving Osgood practically no playing time late during the season, they did deny themselves the option of pulling Howard.

by bleep bloop on May 21, 2010 10:32 AM CDT up reply actions

True

It’s just that Babcock didn’t want to risk Osgood being the reason we miss the Playoffs. Howard was a big part of the March Heroics of Detroit and we needed Howard badly to clinch the Spot. If say we had the Playoffs in the bag back in Feb or even Late Jan. like earlier seasons then they could afford more starts for Ozzy to get rid of the rust. (How interesting is that the most recent team that Osgood faced as the starter is still in the Playoff run and is 2 wins away from the Finals (Flyers))

why not osgood

his job is to step in and win if the other goalie is weak in net.

by randyc714 on May 23, 2010 8:18 AM CDT up reply actions

because Howard wasn’t that weak in net. As I said, he got hung out to dry far too often and with the way Oz played this year it might have been a first round exit.

by Casey Richey on May 24, 2010 7:31 AM CDT up reply actions

Let’s be honest here. Ozzy played 5 or so games in all of 2010. In 2010, he went 0-3.

In 2008, Ozzy started 6 games and played in 2 others in the last three weeks of the season. He was also 27-9-4 that year (7-9-4 this past season) and was dueling with one of the greatest goalies to ever play the game. He was a co-starter that year, not a backup.

Howard earned every minute he played and he let in… what? 3 weak goals in 12 games? Yeah, I’ll take that over a backup who hasn’t played substantial time in six months and had the worst season of his career (also his first ever sub-.500 season).

Howard earned the respect of the fans, the players, coaches, and management in the regular season and they let him prove himself in the playoffs, which he definitely did. Anyone claiming the usual “Red Wings goalies are only good because of the defense in front of them” is an idiot (this isn’t directed at anyone on here). Howard is the only reason we made it to the playoffs in the first place, and the main reason we made it out of the first round.

We should all be thankful that he did what he did, too. We now have a franchise netminder who is only 25 that saves us the need to go out and sign an expensive guy or rely on someone who is much, much older and unreliable.

by Apocalyptic0n3 on May 21, 2010 11:22 AM CDT reply actions

unreliable who

howard did not carrie the team by himself.franchise your getting ahead of your self.osgood has always been solid.theres no difference between a backup and a rotating goalie the bottom line is to do your job when you get your chance and win.

Osgood has been solid in one sense this year: solidly inconsistent.. I like the guy but as you said do the job to win and Howard was winning more than Osgood was.

Top of the line goalie
they need a top of the line goalie that only allows 1 to 2 goals a game not 3 to 4 a game

You mean like… Brodeur? Luongo? Miller? How far did they get their teams?

I like the Wings model best. Spend the big bucks on quality D and Forwards who can play both ends of the ice. Hire a solid if not spectacular goalie.

It seems to have worked pretty good the last 15 years.

by Big Z in Orlando on May 21, 2010 11:28 AM CDT reply actions

really

i really think u dnt no ur hockey. U thought howard sucked?? Seriously, howard led us to a series victory over a great team in pheonix in which they have a great offense and goaltending. Now when it came to san jose, san jose was well rested and detroit was tired. Yet, they came into game 1 and almost pulled it off but too many bullcrap penalties cost them in the series. Remember in that series every game was decided by a goal except for wings blowout victory. Plus look at the great goaltenders, Brodeur lost in 1st round, Fleury second, Luongo, second, Miller, 1st and Rask 2nd. Enough said

by Dolphinsfan23 on May 22, 2010 11:14 AM CDT reply actions

what do you know

howard did not beat the coyotes by himself.i wont even respond to that remark.as for the sharks they still stink.and if howard was not giving up 4goals a game we would have beaten the sharks.babbcock should have pulled him after the second game osgood could of pulled it out.

Maybe

But after the second game, Howard could have had four straight shutouts. There’s no way to know what will happen before it happens and there is no way to know what would have happened if it did not.

by bleep bloop on May 23, 2010 1:47 PM CDT up reply actions

randy...

listen man…..if osgood had given the wings the best chance to win…he would have played….its really that simple. he could barely pull out his own pads this year let alone a playoff series. i like ozzy. he is a great guy. and i loved watching him play all these years. even when he wasnt in detroit for those couple seasons i followed his career. he was a solid netminder in his prime but he hasnt been as good as howard is now for a long time.

by riki42972 on May 24, 2010 12:15 AM CDT reply actions

and besides...

howard needed some pressure experience to develop his game further and now he has it.

by riki42972 on May 24, 2010 12:24 AM CDT reply actions

Whew

I am glad these sort of people are not coaching or making detrimental decisions for the organization. Homie up there can hardly express a sentence without grammatical errors. If you’re trying to make a good argument in a debate you started, at least try to convey your message comprehensibly.

Goalies

I have read everything that was said, and i agree that they should have stayed with Howard as goalie because he played very well and it wasnt his fault that we lost in the second round, our defense wasnt physical at all and they left a lot of people wide open in front of the net, and yes he did let in a few weak goals but what goalie doesnt, but im also gonna say that a back-up goalie should be reliable enough to step in and win, i mean look at the Flyers with Leighton when Boucher went out with an injury in game 5 down 3 games to 1 and now they are 1 win away from the Cup Finals

Lay off Jimmy

Give Jimmy a break…not everyone can have the same luck as Cam Ward did in 06. Ozzie wasnt an overnight success either guys. Took him a couple of years starting/splitting with Vernon. How many of the goals were odd-man rushes because of bonehead turnovers by forwards or defense? We cant just simply rely on Ozzie come playoff time forever, and Howard needed to get the playoff experience. Howard should finish rounding into form as an NHL starter and Im confident in his ability to be our goalie heading forward. Do agree we could use some help on defense with the physical play and coverage of guys in front of the net.

all we can say is

All we can say is that we had a great season especially after dealing with injuries early in the season. When the wings were in 9th place, my friend, who is an avs fan, kept ripping on me saying look at them avs in second place. at the end of the season, i told him could u tell me the standings from top to bottom and he shut up. Also, Babcock is not the type of coach where he changes goalies in the playoffs, when he picks a goalie, that’s it, it is his duty. Howard was the best goalie and i thought was great in the playoffs. Howard is our goalie of the future and we needed him to get some experience in the playoffs as we progress in to becoming a young and better team.

by Dolphinsfan23 on May 25, 2010 6:50 PM CDT reply actions

And apparently some people (Cleary, Maltby) played injured for much of the season.

Babcock is not the type of coach where he changes goalies in the playoffs? Tell that to Hasek.

Handling the puck...

Jimmy did just fine guys. But at the same time, hung out to dry or not, you can’t (as a team) give up 3-4 goals per game in the playoffs and win – ya just can’t. Defense or Goaltending – they’ve both gotta improve.

I say Jimmy needs to go to Marty (Brodeur not Turco) Puck Handling Camp over the summer. Our defense isn’t speedy (Nicky’s getting older, and Lilja is great on PK, but geez he really is a dog with fleas in a race for the puck, I love Stuie and Kronner, but they’re not the most fleet afoot either, etc.), so Jimmy could help a lot by being able to handle the puck better than he did this year. He pretty much just stayed in the net and watched while it rimmed around, allowing the major San Jose forecheck to get on our D-men.

Better puck handling by the goaltender would help a lot.

Smitty.

by Kendal on May 26, 2010 1:08 PM CDT reply actions

Yea I see that.

I would def like to see jimmy improve a ton on puck handling this offseason. I must say that could have made it easier on our D. However i think they have to assume thats their job to win the race to the puck regardless of goaltending styles… so Idk.. either way puck handling needs to improve for howie.

by bond021 on May 26, 2010 2:52 PM CDT up reply actions

Better puck handling would help a lot

Just ignore the “by the goaltender” part. There were only a couple games throughout the season, playoffs included, when the team really looked competent with the puck. Way too many turnovers, and when their stretch passes didn’t work, they just kept trying, odd-man rushes and goals against be damned.

by bleep bloop on May 27, 2010 7:12 PM CDT up reply actions

I can agree with this

I know a lot of us were shaking our heads, like, “why would you even try a pass like that?” knowing there was no way it would even get close to connecting, and when they didnt, bad things happened. again and again.

by mikerlz on May 28, 2010 11:30 AM CDT up reply actions

Defensive improvements and discipline

Yeah Howard let in some softies, but overall I wouldn’t say that he was the weak point. We didn’t have the ability to really lock down the game when it counted. Time and again you could see the Wings give up two goal leads – regular season and playoffs. So we weren’t seeing those third periods where the Wings buried the other team’s chances of coming back. Defensively the Wings probably need to get quicker to get some of the pucks that were getting in behind Howard. As far as discipline, we all felt that there were some bad calls against Detroit in the SJ series. That being said, there were still 16 penalties in the first two games in SJ. Interference, holding, hooking calls indicate to me that a team isn’t moving its feet well. As a lot of people have mentioned the D needs to play better and I think that starts with improving team speed on the back end.
