Game Thread: Red Wings vs. Sharks Game Five
Detroit Red Wings at San Jose Sharks, May 8, 2010 9:00 PM CDT
This Western Conference Semifinal returns to San Jose, as the Detroit Red Wings need to build upon their performance on Thursday in the 7-1 beatdown of the San Jose Sharks to try to become the third team in NHL history to come back from three games down to win a best-of-seven series.
And while the Red Wings can't be expecting an exact replica of Johan Franzen's four-goal, six-point output, they'd undoubtedly like to see the kind of crisp performance we saw in March, versus the sluggish play we recognized from early January.
Puck drop is scheduled for 10:00 PM ET. The game can be seen on Fox Sports Detroit, Comcast Sportsnet (California), TSN, and Versus in its entirety (assuming the Montreal/Pittsburgh game doesn't run long). Comment away below.

I need Montreal to tie this in regulation, and beat Pit in overtime, all before the Wings’ 10ET faceoff.

The game is on both Versus and Fox Sports Detroit. Versus had exclusive rights for games one and two.
I think this is the first time I'm not hungry for the game
I had dinner and dessert. Getting ready to open my Red Wings Chardonnay. That’s right, Red Wings sell wine at Costco.

How can the Sharks rebound? Kiss my ass!

I didn’t even see the hook, but that might be my virtue of Versus’ crappy replay guys in the truck.
Seriously.
Whoever the director is for the Versus broadcast is a complete moron. Has no clue what’s going on. They just showed Franzen sort of skating around against Thorton, no clear hook was ever shown. I thought I saw something on the live play, but I’ve no idea when the call happened.
It was those blue circles they use on replays...

NBA officiating is the only thing that makes me feel better about NHL officiating
Back off man, I'm a scientist
NBA is much better IMO
A foul is pretty clearly defined. Yes, they get very one sided but it’s not the crap that NHL officials seem to make up at times.
I disagree, the NBA is unwatchable to me in part due to the refs
And other reasons. The NHL refs haven’t been impressive lately.

I can't watch the NBA period
And I enjoy college and high school basketball.
I have a trouble keeping up with the NHL and MLB regular seasons, the NFL is the only one I actually do a good job watching all year long.
Insert Clever Statement Here
The NBA is much more polished that college basketball
I’m a fan of both but I’ll take the NBA if it’s not tourney time
I strongly disagree
It seems far less strategic, so much of it is just “give it to star, he spins around three times and makes a fadeaway” every possession.
Personally, HS basketball is my favorite.

Hey

The Wings have been called for 39 penalties in this series, compared to 24 for the Sharks.

Did Mule blow his whole load on Thursday?
That would make me sad. :-(
Really?
Sharks fan here not trying to be a douchebag, just legitimately wondering if you guys aren’t getting shown any replays on your feed, or what the deal is. Malhotra was blatantly tripped on that breakaway drive to the net, which is why he “nearly takes out Howard”. And the Rafalski goal was only able to occur because Franzen knocked Thornton’s stick out of his hands and sent it flying into the corner. Obviously the officiating has been subpar at best this series but when I read these comments it’s as if we’re not watching the same game…
I mean this about the entire game...
…this looks like something I’d see on a mid-January night, not in the first week of May.

Whoever that happens to be, even the Blackhawks, then so be it.
Wouldn’t mind Boston winning it all though…maybe I’ll pull for them now.
Hell of a season you guys
We’ll have some stuff up in the next few days but don’t expect anything other than the recap tomorrow. Enjoyed the season, hopefully see you all back here next year.
Terrible game.
We played like shit and got exactly what we deserved. Still laughing and eye-rolling that the GWG came seconds after a penalty you could probably call during any play, but that’s par for the course.
Speaking of the course, fuck the Sharks. I don’t say this to be a dick (and don’t deny that the team has the requisite talent to win a Cup), but this series was all but handed to them on PPGs and various other momentum-killing bullshit.
No Limits.
Well, then 5 more years...
If he looks 35 and plans on retiring this year, then he should play 5 more seasons.
Unfortunately
That epic “what would happen if the Mule didn’t kick back” ad is now completely fucking worthless.
No Limits.
Absolutely ridiculous series
If the Wings had to lose, I almost wish they’d have been down by 4 goals in the end, just to have an excuse to slam an elbow in Thornton’s face without any fear.
Howard’s got great potential, and if the core guys stick around, this team will be contending again next year. The team just needs a little more depth, and more size (it was gut-wrenching to see the Sharks outmuscle the Wings every time they rushed for the puck).
But now, I’m pulling for Montreal. I’m a sucker for great defense and better goaltending. Cinderella still has a shot at the ball.
"Sooner or later, you're going to have #69 in your face." -Al Michaels
I just don't see the Sharks winning the cup...
Not with the shaky goal tending from Nabokov… Same with Chicago. I don’t see any way a Western Conference team wins the cup this year.
Halak, Rask, Boucher
All three of them have played great. Fleury… Well, he has had moments.
I just don’t think Chicago or San Jose is any good, the Wings just played bad, we beat ourselves.
Nobody thought theyd get past Washington either
They just play good, disciplined hockey, and it keeps on working for them.
"Sooner or later, you're going to have #69 in your face." -Al Michaels
Distasteful as I find the Hawks...
at least they play hockey. Not sure what to call the game the Sharks play, in which they only play to draw penalties.
I'm sick of some of my fellow fans here
Craving injury on another team’s star player. Seriously, go fuck yourself. Sack up and take the loss. Yeah, it’s frustrating… do you want them taking runs at Datsyuk? Or Lidstrom? Don’t stoop to a lower level because you’re feeling whiney, you just sound like a tool. The Wings can’t win every year, they’ll be back in the mix next season.

Ordinarily I agree with you...
but after the stunt Murray pulled on Mule, I don’t care. That was a dangerous, dirty play and there’s no defense for it.
Are you serious?
Of course it makes it better… You can’t honestly tell me that when McCarty went after Lemieux you didn’t feel justice after what he’d done to Draper? Seriously, you throw dirty hits, you better be prepared to take it back.
I see where you're coming from
but the principle is sort of the same. I’m not saying Thornton deserves the same kind of treatment Lemieux did, but the general idea is sound enough.
No Limits.
lol
I’m not saying anyone should beat up Thornton. I’m just saying what goes around comes around. I doubt he did anything too severe, and probably doesn’t deserve anything drastic in return. But if you’re going to go after someone, be prepared to have it happen to you later, I guess.
No Limits.
Yet most of you villify Bertuzzi...
but glorify McCarty. Same exact situation, same exact reaction, different result. Let’s not be so quick to judge one act that went wrong. After all, it sure looked like McCarty got in some knees to the head of Lemieux in that “fight”.
Not to mention
Bertuzzi hasn’t shown that level of behavior in years, and in two separate tenures with Detroit. I don’t get the hate of him.

Giving his good friend and linemate a dirty hit and concussion
isn’t a valid reason but McCarty’s was? It was almost the exact same thing.
Yes, but the way Bertuzzi went after him, I feel it was a bit different and a bit TOO aggressive.
Plus McCarty was nice enough not to end his career… :P
well
Bert didn’t end Moore’s career. the idiots that piled on top ended Moore’s career.
by Casey Richey on May 9, 2010 12:11 AM CDT up reply actions
Technically it was still Bert's fault though...
I guess the only reason Claude’s career continued was because the rest of the team was too busy brawling.
McCarty
was being held back by refs the whole time and caught Lemieux with a blindside punch to the face, and continued to attack when Lemieux was clearly down and out. How is that less aggressive? They were on the same level. The injury outcome is what is changes everyone’s opinion.
I disagree...
Lemieux knew it was coming…
Moore was more blindsided.
McCarty did it amidst much action, in a game that was already filled with brawls and would go down as a dirty game. Bertuzzi just flat out sucker punched him in the middle of play. After a dirty hit yes, but not even close to Lemieux’s on Draper.
Moore knew it was coming
Bertuzzi was chasing him and pulling on his jersey for a solid 10-15 seconds…and I’m sure Bert was giving him an earful too. Moore tried to act like it wasn’t coming, but he definitely knew he was getting something in return.
Moore wasn't expecting Bertuzzi to actually hit him though...
He didn’t think Bertuzzi was crazy enough to just go and sucker punch him. He expected Bertuzzi to stop. He thought he was only trying to get his consent to fight.
I never said go after Thornton...
I’m just saying, don’t go for dirty hits if you don’t want to get popped back.
Well,
Then maybe you should stay on topic if you’re going to respond to me. My post was in direct reference to the clowns calling for taking Thornton out.
Not sure why you're getting all snotty with me...
I was responding to the general statement you used within your argument. Don’t be vague with what you say.
There were no "clowns", it was just my post
And Thornton was just a random name.
It was a suggestion borne from frustration. Forget about it.

We're all upset...
I think Brion is venting his frustrations on the users here, rather than the players of San Jose.
Aside from you
There were 2 others with similar posts. Frustration or not, it’s irresponsible and just gives other people fuel to treat Wings fans like trash.
If they're going to judge the entire Wings fanbase
based on one frustrated post from me, then they’re touched in the head anyway.
The people who hate the Wings, will find reasons to hate them no matter what we say or do.
To anyone else who’s been watching this series, it was a harsh rollercoaster ride for the team and the fans, and frustration is to be expected.
Count it as a plus that the team didn’t act out my desire. It’s one of their best traits.

Nope.
Wings are far too nice. Someone should have killed Sharp for what he did to Nick last year, Wings allow teams to take liberties with their best players.
Wrong again.
Wings fans are supposed to have class. The bullshit chants at the Joe this post-season along with the calls to intentionally injure other players?
That’s what Avs fans do. This isn’t Denver. This is Hockeytown. We don’t pull amateur shit like that here.
by john.kmiecik on May 8, 2010 11:57 PM CDT up reply actions
Class only gets you so far.
Gotta punch back at some point. How many times do you have to get hit in the groin until you realize you’re being hit?
Tremendous difference
There’s standing up for yourself, and there’s dirty retaliation. Dropping the gloves is much different than waiting for a guy’s head to be down. You can punch back when the guy is looking at you. Let the cheap shot artists stay away from the hockey I watch and love.
Well than why didn't Stuart beat the hell out of Patrick Sharp
for what he pulled on Nick in last year’s playoffs? I never saw anyone square off with Sharp.
I'm not Brad Stuart
Feel free to ask him. But if they’re not going to fight for themselves, that’s their decision. Throwing cheap shots just makes me turn the game off. I’m not a fan of Philly or Anaheim for a reason.
I admit I was going overboard with that
But it was hard not to be frustrated after the Sharks pull those two really dirty plays (Flippula’s knee-on-knee hit and the non-call on Franzen) on the Wings and only get 1 2 minute powerplay out of it. Especially considering that the Sharks drew an absurd amount of powerplays by diving. I’m not trying to be a sore loser, but the refs really fucked this series up
dude
let’s have this night to bitch. you know nobody actually means what they say about taking a run at people. except maybe at the refs
That's the problem
They DID take runs at the Wings star players. I’m only asking for just desserts.

But I just bought a fifth of vodka today.
It deserves one.
It was a flat out dangerous play. Blind side hit to the head long after the puck had left his stick. There’s no excuse, there’s no reason for it, and that’s the kind of stuff that can end careers.
I’ll be surprised if he gets a suspension though…because is the Refs are any indication from this series, the rules apparently don’t apply to the Sharks. If they feel nice enough to give a suspension for it, it’ll be a one-gamer or something small like that.
Pathetic. If that was called, the Wings would have been on the PP, and the 2nd goal wouldn’t have been scored by the Sharks. Who knows what would have happened then.
by The BBQ Chicken Madness on May 9, 2010 12:07 AM CDT up reply actions
how do you miss that call, too?
Franzen got blasted from behind, blindsided to the head while he was facing the other way compared to Murray. It looked like an obvious dirty hit real time, and yet I knew it wouldn’t be called because the #1 thing I learned from this series is NEVER expect the refs to call something that is obvious or would make sense.
Missed calls happen.
Unfortunately in this league they happen far too often.
The NHL has a huge officiating problem, across the board. They’ve lost a lot of the veteran referees and have been promoting linesman that are young and inexperienced. It’s something the league as a whole has had to address for a few seasons now but instead tweaks the rules to allow more slush room for referees.
I don’t know what the solution is but, what they’ve been trying to do so far doesn’t work.
by john.kmiecik on May 9, 2010 12:15 AM CDT up reply actions
Yes missed calls do happen
A missed high stick happens. A missed trip. A missed interference. Yes, those happen, and its unfortunate.
But I see them missing the most obvious hits from behind and other blindside hits, and those sicken me the most. I remember a number of years ago where hits from behind was being enforced really strongly. Whatever happened to that? Now I see routine nits from behind in every game from every team, and its hardly ever called.
The officiating is a HUUGE issue, it’s deteriorated greatly in the past few seasons and this playoffs across the board has been the worst officiated in a long time.
Worse than that...they didn't stop play.
A player on the ice, obviously not getting up, you stop play. Instead they let the play continue, creating an injury based power play for the Sharks. When the whistle finally blew, it was deep in the Wings’ zone.
Missed the call. Ignored an injured player. That’s all sorts of FAIL.
by The BBQ Chicken Madness on May 9, 2010 12:15 AM CDT up reply actions
actually, they dont stop play till injured team usually gets the puck…remember Paul Coffey going down vs the Devils in the SC finals…they scored on that play too…it sucked.
Um.
I’ve seen Refs stop play for an injured player no matter who has the puck plenty of times.
by The BBQ Chicken Madness on May 9, 2010 12:20 AM CDT up reply actions

Tough loss
But if it’s the Sharks vs. Black Hawks as it appears it will, I gotta pull for the Sharks.
Maybe not
Sharks are better overall, but Chicago’s got some outstanding skaters. Wish the Wings had one or two of them (not that the Wings have bad skaters…)
You can't possibly deny...
that the series was won on the power play. I’m not saying the Wings didn’t take bad penalties. They did. The Blackhawks generally do not do that.

but the season just ended and we all need something to bash right now
So...fairly officiated then?
I don’t blame the Sharks for taking advantage, but the ice was tilted by several weak calls and several non-calls in all of the games.
It was weak officiating going both ways, but it clearly favored the Sharks overall. They were the better team anyways, but this series wouldn’t have been done in 5 if the Refs hadn’t called it the way they did.

I won’t bother to read over the game thread above. I ignore fans that blame a loss on officiating alone. Yes, the refs were crap.
Detroit never does it in the playoffs
and I hope they never will. If you lose you only have yourself to blame, don’t “kill” the other team because you didn’t decide to show up.
yeah
we have no right to complain after having the same player being both slashed in the face (game 1) and taking a shot to head which had been expressly disallowed by the NHL weeks before.
Yeah, let’s just not call those, and then bitch at our own fans when they call blood for blood. Makes perfect sense.

Missed calls happen.
Do they suck? Yep, sure do. Goes both ways. Go read any other hockey blog. Every team gets fucked on missed calls. Detroit is not singled out, no matter how much you want them to be.

There is no conspiracy, just bad, inconsistent officiating. The game happens so fast, half the time they just call something because it looked funny… ala the Pavelski penalty shot. Also the first penalty of the game on Franzen, seriously it’s like a basketball game. Except when a player, err a Wings player, gets elbowed in the head… then it’s rugby.
How was that *not* a penalty shot?
He had a clean shot at the net and was interfered with in the process of his shot.
That’s a penalty shot.
25.1 Penalty Shot – A penalty shot is designed to restore a scoring opportunity which was lost as a result of a foul being committed by the offending team, based on the parameters set out in these rules.

The NHL wants exciting playoff series, yet they allow the officiating to be this bad. Worst officiating I have ever seen in the playoffs. I miss the old days when both teams were lucky to get 4 power plays in a game.
eh
I’d say the Sharks are at least as good as us, and I’m not saying they don’t have the talent to win legitimately in a series.
But as I’ve been saying since game 2, they haven’t really had to use it. 4 5-on-3s in a series and they get all of them, winning 2 games off of goals from them? I mean really now. They’re a good team, but those goals might as well have had legs and a pussy on them—they wouldn’t have been harder to miss.

The Sharks are better than us.

All true statements.
The officiating was unbelievably poor for a series of this magnitude. Also a true statement.
I've got no problem with it.
Just wish it was settled by the players. The officiating had to much bearing in this series and it should never be that way.
Of course it is
but that doesn’t make it true. Most of the players on this team have won a championship; SJS as a team has not. Talent-wise? Sure. San Jose certainly won the games and took advantage of their chances. But if the calls had gone the other way, so too would have the series.
Sorry, but that’s the truth. I’m not gonna get all Tinfoil-Hat-Brigade here, but the Sharks’ talent was NOT the deciding factor here. They played well enough to win, but they were not the better team 5v5.
No Limits.
It's the truth, but just the same...
This series should’ve been a lot tighter. With everything at equilibrium, this series should’ve gone the distance.
The way they lost stings a lot more than the loss itself.

San Jose is a better team.
But the calls in that series were still a load of crap. The non-call on Franzen, pathetic. Several other weak calls in this game alone. There were weak calls on both sides, but it CLEARLY favored the Sharks on the whole.
I don’t hate the Sharks. I just want someone to beat the Pens. If the Sharks can do it, I’m cool with that. But there’s no objective way to say that series was a well officiated one. It wasn’t.
by The BBQ Chicken Madness on May 9, 2010 12:11 AM CDT up reply actions
It wasn't, IMHO
That’s not either team’s fault. You take what you’re given. San Jose still played better, though.
I'm not a conspiracy theorist.
But that series smelled.
The Sharks were better. They won in 5. They buried shots when they had to. But they got a lot of help, intentional or not.
One thing is that it just seemed that the Sharks got the calls at the most important times in a game. They always had the first PP, and the Wings never got the power plays in the 3rd period. The Wings did thake their share of very stupid penalties in this series, but the Sharks could have gotten a lot more called against them… the Wings just didn’t do a good enough job selling it.
The Sharks' sole objective is to draw penalties.
They did it well. Their entire game plan is built on falling down and looking to the officials to see if an arm goes up.
They did get the most important call of all, though
The 6-on-4 at the end of tonight’s game.
I was surprised the ref’s blew the whistle on that one…if they were going to make anything happen at all in that game, that was going to have to be it.
"Sooner or later, you're going to have #69 in your face." -Al Michaels
I was surprised at that
I thought the refs were going to let that one go, given the timing.
I wish they did let it go...
Power plays in that situation aren’t that advantagous because then the opposing team can ice the puck.

Yeah, it does become more hectic with the extra body.
The defending team seems to swing, miss and hit each other when they try to clear the puck.
Yeah, I'm surprised that isn't a strategy.
Sort of like the hack-a-shaq in basketball. Getting rid of icing the puck in that situation really helps the defense. If you have confidence in the 4 guys on the ice, seems like a way to kill the time.
Don’t know if the risk outweights the reward on it though. If I was coaching, I’d try it a few times in a regular season game, just to see.

Future bright spot for Wings
Howard was outstanding this game, esp. in the third when San Jose could have blown it open with those two shots on goal from close in.
And
Maltby, May, Bertuzzi. Probably 2 out of the Lebda, Meech, Lilja group. Gator will almost definitely be a full timer next season.
I would love to see Helm develop more
If he can, that is. He’s got the grit and speed to burn. I’d like to see him get even more dangerous.
Also,
If Lidstrom comes back, he’ll have a reduced salary and hopefully a lesser role. Meaning more money and opportunity for new guys! I’m really looking forward to it.
Why is Lidstrom mulling retirement anyway?
Body not holding up, or is he losing his passion?
He still has plenty of skill left to offer the team. If Yzerman could make it an extra 2 years, so can he.

To those saying blaming the officiating is an "excuse"
Two points:
1) Take the Wings current 20 year playoff run or so. How many series have we had as many 5 on 3s as San Jose did in this series? I would bet zero. Am I really supposed to believe that the 2nd least penalized team in the regular season suddenly lost all sense of discipline in the span of five games?
2) The new standard of penalties sucks, with the most ticky tack things being called. So if all these phantom calls can get an official’s arm up, how can they drop the ball on three BLATANT double minor/major penalties.
The first one, where Franzen got clipped in the face is probably the worst since he got called for a penalty on top of the missed high stick.
Tonight, at least the kneeing penalty was called, but more often than not, that’s called as a major and the Shark played picked up his leg to make contact and it was way more than incidental.
The last one being the textbook blindside hit on Franzen by Murray. I’ve seen the NHL’s video. This will be an automatic major penalty/suspension next year. I cannot fathom how the league makes a point to crack down on this, then turns a blind eye to the blindside hit.
If you’re going to call the weak ones, you better call the ones that actually leaves a guy lying on the ice.
especially when its the same guy
twice.
Christ knows if Setoguchi went down like Franzen did, whoever touched him last would be suspended for the rest of their natural life.

Players are getting older and other teams have managed to catch up with good drafting, etc. It’s a cycle. Even if the Wings are on the decline, I don’t think we’ll see a Dead Wings era again.
The way the team is managed, I don't think it'll happen again either
They’re just too good at finding and raising talent. It may be decades before we see another Lidstrom or Datsyuk, but it’s not like they’re going to be hurting for talent anytime soon.

there's always next year, though
for the wings. most teams can’t say that every year. i think they had energy at times but nabakov was a wall and killed all the momentum in this game
Wings got chances
There were no lack of shots on goal in this game. Nabby stood up well.
i would complain-
about why the sharks went into chase mode and got themselves in penalty trouble.
you see, sharks fan is used to losing and getting rolled.
red wings fan is used to winning and rolling.
i think the disconnect is in the reversal of fortunes.

For some reason I have a feeling Jumbo is going to be a goddamn beast this year. Sharks are going to be tied 1-1 in the series going on the road for game three in the first round, and five minutes into the second he is just going to take over. ~Plank

Eh, probably
Transition periods are tough for any fan who’s used to a consistent contender.
yeah
because you guys drew so many penalties. Which one of us is higher? Maybe I’m misunderstanding (since I’m pretty loaded, I won’t lie) but your first sentence made me LOL. Penalty trouble? Seriously?
No Limits.
well, the sharks did draw a lot of penalties.
whether by being a little crafty, and selling calls, or by honestly digging harder and forcing detroit to take bad penalties.
and there is always the issue of being able to capitalize on those- which we havent been able to do in the past…

I invoke
Arkanfel’s Corollary to the Law of Averages:
“The Law of Averages, as applied to sports, will only screw the team Arkanfel is rooting for as soon as a trend is noticed.”
“No PP success” complain the Sharks fans, then they win a series off of them. Wings kill like 40 of their last 43 penalties in the regular season, and then basically lose two (arguably three) games off of PP chances.
GRRRARGH!
No Limits.
Maybe it's the vodka
But that gave me a chuckle.
also
the trend of dropping one-goal games was not reversed. as I gloomily predicted, the Wings would lose any close game. anything tied up with anything more than 5 mins left in the third, I don’t trust anymore. 2 goal leads with 25 minutes left? Nope. We only won 7-1 in game 4 because that’s what it takes for this team to win a playoff game.

So if Lidstrom does end up retiring... Or whenever he does retire...
Who do you think gets Captain? My bet is on Z. I think Datsyuk is the better talent, but Z is the better leader.
what about rafalski?

dont think hes been here long enough
i think it goes to hank. and after hank….helm? yzerman said he is future captain material
Would love Helm to get the A
That would rock.
I dunno
it might be too early for Helm to get an A. Maybe in a year or three, but not now. I think I’d give Hank the C and give the A’s to Pav and Cleary or Draper.

Zetterberg deserves it
He seems like the natural successor. Great natural leadership skills.

A lot like Barry Bonds' home runs..
It doesn’t matter what caused them, the record book counted them all!
I'll agree with that
I still think we would have had an honest shot at going all the way if only a handful of calls at the end not been made. I actually thought with 20 or so games left that we wouldn’t make it into the playoffs, but near the season we even had an outside chance of overtaking CHI, which would have been hilarious.
In the final analysis, I consider this season a success even if it didn’t turn out like it probably should have for a team that (mostly) got out of the game what they put into it down the stretch.

suit yourself
but I don’t think I give a flying fuck what happens from here. Have Claude Lemieux come back and win a cup single-handedly, for all I care. It’s all the same to me from here on in.

its all about hate for me from now on
dont want pens or hawks to win. or philly but theyre pretty much gone anyway
