Holmstrom reportedly close to extension with Red Wings

Multiple sources have reported that goaltender pest Tomas Holmstrom is nearing a return to the Red Wings for two more seasons.

Ansar Khan of MLive speculated that Detroit was close to getting Holmstrom back in a Winged Wheel:

"I'm sure we're going to get a deal done," Howard Gourwitz, Holmstrom's agent, said. "We're looking at a two-year term, and so are the Red Wings. I think we have an agreement in concept. We're very close."

Fox Sports Detroit's Jennifer Hammond and The Bill Waters Show co-host Greg Brady both tweeted that Holmstrom re-signed with the Red Wings, and for slightly less money than his current $2.25 million deal.  Per Brady:

Red Wings sign Holmstrom. Tomas Holmstrom's cap hit for a 2 year deal is 1.875M/ year.

If any of this holds true, it will work wonders for the Red Wings' cap issues. At just under $2 million, Holmstrom's cap hit will leave plenty of room to sign UFA Todd Bertuzzi and RFA's Justin Abdelkader, Darren Helm, Patrick Eaves and Drew Miller to deals for next year.

GM Ken Holland looks to continue a successful week by signing Holmstrom.  Earlier this week he got Nicklas Lidstrom to take a slight paycut to give Detroit more cap room, and it wouldn't be much of a surprise if Holmstrom has followed his countryman's example.
