Off-season hockey oasis!!
For those of us going through hockey withdrawal right now.. during the always boring hockey-less summer
Now that the draft is over and we probably won't see too much action until July 1st. No actual hockey until October, the question becomes "how to get our hockey fix?" Besides maybe playing ourselves or video games, I guess. Well? I found that Hulu.com has several hockey related channels with some good stuff on there.Including a bunch of old games in there complete full glory!!
Just watched Patrick Roy's last game as a Canadian where Bowman and Co. really take it to them. If you remember this game is where Roy ends up pulling himself after letting it 9 goals and not being replaced. It's is a real trip to watch some of these old games. If nothing else just to see how the league/players have changed over the years. Even though this game was only from 1995, things have changed quite a bit. From the refs wearing helmets (concealing Kerry Frasier's ridiculous helmet hair) to players equipment (black tuuk chasis&hardly any face sheilds). Ol' (well... young) D Mac gets into a fight only a few minutes in and being totally stripped from waist up before it's over. No mandatory fight strap.
Guess I'm kind of pointing out the obvious here...games will change over the years. However, it's easy to forget sometimes just how far things have come. Still it was a different style of game, even as little as 15 years ago. Our Red Wingsstill looked great, what a team we had back then? The Russian 5 line, Martin LaPointe, D-mac, Draper, Yzerman, Vernon under Bowman. It's crazy we didn't win every year, haha. Drapes and Lids look like kids!! I almost recognized more names during around the league talk than I would nowadays. Possibly meaning players stuck around longer? I also look forward to watching some of the black and white games, now that should be a trip.
Has anyone ever seen the documentary called "Pond Hockey"? It is also available to be watched and I suggest that you do. It follows the 1st annual pond hockey tournament in Minnesota. As well as a bunch of interviews and footage of players/coaches/family new and old. It's a pretty fun trip down memory lane and gets back to why we started loving this great sport in the first place. Growing up in Florida playing indoors.. I only got to play hockey outdoors once, while visiting my grandma up in Michigan on the lake behind her house. I have to say it's definitely an experience I will never forget.
Here are the links... hope you enjoy!!
