Blackhawks take Cup in OT

Patrick Kane scored in overtime to give the Chicago Blackhawks a 4-3 win over the Philadelphia Flyers in Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Finals.  Jonathan Toews won the Conn Smythe and handed the Cup off to former Red Wing Marian Hossa first.  Let the trolling begin.

Personally

Although many Detroit fans won’t like that Chicago wins the cup we should at least give some sort of respect. Even if it’s not to the team, to the fans, or to 20 Cents Kane. At least give a hoot for the way they played, they earned it through their own merit. We don’t even know what the Colorado Avalanche fans were thinking too much when we won the cup in 97 because there was a lack of message boards and use of the internet compared to now. But I’m sure if we just hate on them now it will be pretty similar to what Avs fans thought of us back then. A few good players who have proved great playoff performances like Toews and Byfuglien should get some respect too for their stepping up to play.

If you think about it, there is several similarites between this Hawks team and the 97 Wings. I’ve already said a few before.

Though I guess we can count on one thing. Unless one of their players ends up in an accident and wills them to the cup via a Konstantinov deal. Their cap struggles will probably reduce their chances greatly at repeating.

No trolling

Fun games against Detroit’s great teams are ahead in all of our futures. I will be looking forward to all of them. Two good teams will be playing each other for quite some time.

Here’s to it!

And this bad wagon thing

If you were old enough to remember The Wings in the late ’60’s, "70’s and ’80’s you would shut your pie hole. Your team has a solid fan base just like we do. How was the attendence in Detroit this year? Stadium full? Bandwagon fans left The Wings because they were not winning.

You are the typical jelous Detrot fan. I know. I live here. Next season will come before you know it. Get your conspiracy theories ready. the worls is now truly against you.

Do some research

Wings were third in attendance this season, and they don’t have the biggest arena either.

Hey

I’ve been watching (well listening mostly, and going to games since early ’70’s). I’ve seen it all. Including the resurgence of your team some years back.

Most certainly Hawks fans will be here. I wish some of them were not, but I’ll bet you feel the same way.

Next few years will be fun games in the central.

The 70's

Yes, you’re quite right, in the mid 70’s the Wings had some awful teams, missing the playoffs from 1970 till 1978, and at Olympia on some nights there was maybe 5000 people in the building, a lot of people on these boards are too young to remember the “Dead Wings” era.

by nighthawk55 on Jun 10, 2010 12:29 PM CDT up reply actions

to clarify

the bandwagon argument is somewhat fruitless; yes i think blackhawks fans are bad fans, but it’s really here nor there. nobody is going to pistons games for the next 5 years, and if they are good again, we’ll all go. same deal.

my argument to laaarmer, the illiterate, is that he’s a twat for posting on a red wings message board.

why does he do this? because blackhawks fans hate the red wings first, like the blackhawks second, which stems from white sox / cubs “rivalry” which stems from socioeconomic disparities (i’ll get you a dictionary for christmas, laaarmer)

they are bitter little people

by redwingxviii on Jun 10, 2010 12:56 PM CDT up reply actions

meh,

I for one have never seen a reason to “Hate” other teams. I am not one to call a detroit fan “scum”, nor do I call the team that. I also do not believe in blasting someone just because they are not a fan of “MY” team. I have been coming to this site since I found it last year, and generally enjoy the writing here. But, into every life some rain must fall. The entitlement attitude is baffling to me, kind of like the yankees fans being affronted that someone might root for boston… I was rooting for the wings the last ten years because my favorite player was on the rooster, unless they played my Hawks. Besides, it is easy to talk about how long someone has been a fan after 10+ years of winning. Berating a fan for not being vocal after 10+ years of losing… meh, what’s the point?
On to more important matters… Did I pass the literacy test?

no

maybe i’m failing literacy class too though, since i can’t make sense of your gibberish.

is there a reason to hate other teams? beats me, but hawks fans hate detroit. “detroit sucks” is more of a chant than anything else in chicago. right? do wings fans hate chicago? maybe. wings fans certainly aren’t endeared to them right now. chicago is the antagonist though.

on “blasting someone.” if you’re a hawks fan coming onto this site, what should you expect? there’s a bit of an argument if laaarmer was being a dick or not, but i made my own call there.

the entitlement attitude – wings fans are probably a bit spoiled – we’ve had a good run. we don’t really want to share. that’s sorta the point of being a fan. but again, it’s not the wings fans that are the antagonists. in general, i think wings fans say “chicago had the best team in 2010.” i think chicago fans still say “detroit sucks” – doesn’t matter if Detroit wins the cup, chicago wins the cup, pittsburgh wins the cup.

as for cheering for the wings and the hawks based on your favorite player? makes zero sense to me, but to each their own.

are most wings fans from the last 20 years? given age and success, sure. but in the post you responded to, i said the bandwagon argument isn’t really worth fighting.

the entire thread started because i said the guy was a dick for coming onto the red wings message board the night you win. that’s the only argument i’d choose to continue.

if I may step in here

I think the reason so many people are more pissed about the Hawks bandwagon is the fact that the Chicago newspapers and media industries are preaching how to get on the bandwagon…and they explicitly state it as bandwagon. That’s my biggest beef with the whole notion of bandwagon-ing in Chicago, the outright invitations to the bandwagon followed by those same people denying it and preaching that the fans have been that way the past 10 years.

by Casey Richey on Jun 10, 2010 2:04 PM CDT up reply actions

Not to mention

You’ve got respected journalists like Walter Jacobsen writing ridiculous articles about the rules of hockey (“hooking is something a woman with loose morals does”). Then you’ve got Richard Roeper questioning the racial makeup of hockey fans. Who gives a crap what colour the fans are? People wonder why this city is so looked down upon when it comes to hockey, and it’s stuff like that.

5 years ago, you couldn’t even get a sports columnist in this town to write anything about the Hawks – now everyone wants to get in line congratulating them. Combine that with the lack of fan support (not just in terms of home attendance) and people will jump all over the fans. If you’ve been a fan through the dark ages, then grow some thick skin and celebrate your team’s victory. I think if stuff like these comments really bother you, then maybe you should check your own fanhood.

Not since Fleury scored with his butt 2 years did a Stanley Cup winning goal look so bad.Though I argue this one was worse…Fleury got unlucky on that third goal in 2008 in game 6, and it wasn’t in OT. That goal that Leighton gave up tonight…is just…wow, that is just the worst kind of goal to give up by ANY goalie. Pretty anticlimatic ending IMO…commentators going, “Kane is celebrating…there is no signal yet…we don’t know for sure if the puck went in…they will review this” All because a harmless zero-angle shot wasn’t harmlessly set aside by the goalie. No “AND HAS WON THE STANLEY CUP!” Granted it was in OT, but still wasn’t anything like the last 2 cup endings, which were breathtaking down to the last second. This one was like…oh, ok, I guess it’s over now all of teh sudden.

I’m not trying to take away anything from Chicago…but as far as sports stories goes, that wasn’t a very pretty goal. And it almost seems appropriate in a playoffs that featured very subpar goaltending across the board.

by tehGOALIE on Jun 10, 2010 12:09 AM CDT reply actions

The lack of replayability of the final moment (neither NBC or CBC got a good call to go along with the goal) is perhaps the only redeeming feature of this finale for Flyers fans and Chicago-haters.

by PursuitOfLappyness on Jun 10, 2010 1:17 AM CDT up reply actions

I thnk it's funny, the goofiness of the winning goal

And it points out how seldom real life gives us those perfectly scripted movie-like moments, so they are even more rare than we think and should treasure them.

I’m happy for Chicago. It’s been a long time, and they have some fans who have been waiting for this again for so many decades. It should be a beautiful parade. :)

Villie

How odd is it that Leino goes from a 3rd line BUST for detroit to a 2nd line stud for Philly. Just pisses me off. The third goal for Philly, Leino going coast to coast was something the wings were wishing he would do his whole tenure here. Give these dam kids some playing time babcock. You see what happened with Jimmy, just imagine if we had room for Quincy and now leino… missed opportunities. Sigh

Three things:

1) Did anyone else notice how classless the fans were during the celebration? I mean, I understand they just lost, but that was a LOT of booing. Especially during the Commisioner’s little speech.

2) It took the utter destruction of a salary cap to overcome the Hossa Curse.

3) That was a really weak goal that captured the cup. Even in a regular season game that shouldn’t have gone in, much less the Stanley Cup Finals. This has got to be one of the worst goaltending finals I’ve seen.

The goaltending was awful, agreed, and IMO not a great series, but congrats to the Hawks, they deserve it, and im glad to see them break their 1961 curse and the Cup go to an original six team.

feelings on blackhawks

1) i can respect the players. they are a good team. obviously.

2) i can respect about 10% of their “real” fanbase (pop. 1,200 people). 10% like the blackhawks. 90% like saying “detroit sucks.” This is because blackhawks ownership hated the fans for so long, so most of their real fanbase also hates the blackhawks.

3) their “new” fanbase won’t be around next week, when they go back to loving the cubs. i like that the “real” blackhawks fans (who are also white sox fans) have to share with the cubs fans, whom they hate.

4) this really, really, really sucks. worse than the Avs winning, I think. But like the avs, I think we’ll erase the blackhawks pretty soon.

by redwingxviii on Jun 10, 2010 10:10 AM CDT reply actions

Hossa: -3 with no points over the last three deciding games.

The fact that he got his Cup, on the shoulder of everyone else, just pisses me off. Other then that, Keith is a great, great player, Toews and the rest of them, save for Patrick Kane (who I think is a piece of shit with an ego that’s way too big for how “skilled” he is) are great players who earned this.

Oh, except Niemi. This was, undoubtedly, the worst goaltending performance ever by two teams. Terrible series, unfortunate result for us Wings fans, but congratulations nonetheless to Chicago fans.

Just watch out for that salary cap thing. It could be a hazard.

As much as it pains me to say this...

Congrat’s to the Chicago Blackhawks on your Stanley Cup victory. (man that stings…) It was good to see a couple former Wings holding the cup this season (3rd times a charm for Hossa).

Hawk fans- if you’re trolling- congrats! Don’t get too comfortable at the top, though. I don’t think the Wings will get off to the poor start next season which will put the pressure on the defending champs.

The brightest side of this is that Cindy Crysby didn’t win! And for that, I am thankful.

by Detroitfantc on Jun 10, 2010 2:20 PM CDT reply actions

Hawks fan here (like I had to advertise)

Some have mentioned this rivalry is at its apex now, well I think it is only heating up. Sure the Hawks had allot of fans along for the ride, but I’m certain some will not be getting off the train, and are now hooked.

It is going to be interesting to see what the Hawks do this offseason. Who will stay, who will go. The Hawks only expect $500,000 additional room next year now that Toews Conn Smyth bonus counts against next season ($1,500,000). But the core of the team will be intact, and many from Rockford who are ready to play. Will they be as good? Probably not, but to not expect a Team that still has Toews, Kane, Keith, Hossa, Seabrook, Hammer, Neimi at least to build around to still be a contender is a stretch.

Detroit is not going to be a slouch, nor will Nashville. Once again the Central Division will probably be the toughest in the NHL. It is going to be fun to see how it plays out, and I can’t wait for October for it to start all over again!
