If you could pick one player...
to "fill out" the roster in some way or replace a player who would you pick?
I'd look for a long term RW to replace Bertuzzi and the player I would pick is Bobby Ryan. Yes, I know he's a Duck and we all hate the Ducks, but at least I didn't say Getzlaff or Perry (I HATE both of them).
Bobby Ryan though, wow does he have puck possession skills, plays the game hard and well, is a solid teammate, good vision, above average hands, good size. He'd be a great fit next to Filps and Z. He can play infront of the net and behind it along the boards. He's gritty and not afraid to mix it up a little if needed, but he's not the arrogant idiot like Getzlaff or dirty like Perry. He hits hard plays hard.
He's not a superstar, but he's a well above average player who could score 40-45 goals next to a Zetterberg or Datysuk.
If not Bobby Ryan, who would you pick? Try to pick a good player that you think the Red Wings could "possibly" get (unlike Overchkin or Crosby).

Honestly? I’d try to swindle the hell out of Nashville and snag Shea Weber. With Lidstrom likely gone in the next year or two, Weber would be great both talent and leadership wise. We might even be able to get him for Stuart and/or Rafalski and a draft pick or two (though I am likely being too optimistic here).
We’d go forward with a core of young defenseman who are all extremely talented. Weber and Kronwall on the top line and Ericsson and Kindl on the second line for the foreseeable future does not sound like a bad thing to me.
But yes, I would love me some Shea Weber on the Wings. In my head, he’s the perfect fit for the Winged Wheel.

hmmmm...
I hadn’t even given the D a thought really…I’d hate to lose Stuart, but Rafi is ‘slowing’ down faster than he should. I’d hate to lose him too, but I see Stuart’s style lasting longer in the league due to his size while Rafalski is too small…shrugs I’d love to see Weber with a Winged Wheel though
It’s hard to picture Stuart being a centerpiece of this team. With Rafalski getting older and Lidstrom retiring, that makes our top line Kronwall and Stuart. While I think Kronwall will do fine, I don’t like having to rely on Stuart that often. Losing Stuart or Rafalski or both would be a small price to pay for a 24 year old defensive anchor. Get him here and sign him to a Holland contract in a season or two and make him a Wing for the next decade or so, I’ll be happy.
Or we can go with the current plan and develop the hell out of our top prospect, Kindl.

Hell yes
If we could land Shea Weber for Rafalski, Stuart, and a draft pick, we would have totally robbed Nashville. I can’t imagine anybody would be that dumb. Stuart isn’t exactly a franchise defenceman, Rafalski isn’t the Rafalski of old. I think that the price on Shea Weber would be much higher, but I like Weber, I’m just not willing to give up too much to get him.
I like the Shea Weber idea but...
Dion Phaneuf?!! A little on the (dirty) edge sometimes, but wow think of what Babcock could do with that talent.
Idk – shoot it down if you want.
Smitty
Dion Phaneuf? Meh. Always felt he was one of the most overhyped players in the league

Ryan Miller

Henrik Lundqvist
It would be interesting to see what he could do on a real team with a real defense in front of him.
He won olympic gold
That good enough?

That's not bad, but that's with an all-star team
But, I’d still love to see him in goal for the Wings, with Ryan Miller as his back-up. Then I’d really be happy.
I’d rather he back up Miller, but yeah, I see your point. I’d be happy too.

why would you want
2 allstar goalies when you can only play one? Just about every stud goalie out there struggles to play when they sit for too many games. I’d rather have a Ty Conklin ride my bench, someone who can sit for any number of games knowing that’s their role.
With both of them, that would mean
that I would be able to watch one of them on the bench at all times. Much better view than with the helmet on. ;-)

I think scoring 40-45 goals makes you a superstar caliber player in today’s NHL. As a reminder, Steve Stamkos and some other d-bag shared the Rocket Richard trophy last year with 51.

honestly i could see lidstrom retiring next year and detroit pick up kaberle through FA. and then when rafalskis contract up (in 2 years i think) they will go after another solid FA unless Smith or Kindl will be ready to step in by then. just think within the next 2 years holland will have 12 million in cap space to work with ( granted losing lidstrom will suck but he IS slowing down a little as much as you guys want to admit it or not.) and that will leave some cash to bring in a few more good players. and that 12 million doesnt include modano coming off the books or salei or draper. detroit could be looking at close to 15 million in cap space.
kaberle is not the Wings type of D
He’s an offensive defenseman first, not a defensive one. Sure, he has great points stats, specifically in the assist category, but if you look at his +/-, he’s been on the minus side an awful lot of seasons. Yes, Rafalski is offensive too, but he’s never been on the negative side of +/- (maybe because he’s always played with a great partner on the blueline). Anyways, I think that after Nik leaves us, we’ll go after some young hotshot to lead the defense. A Weber, Keith, Seabrook type of person. Someone with solid leadership, a terrific sniper shot to bounce the boards, Norris trophy type of defense. Kronwall is never going to be that guy. He’s too much of a hitter and too small. I love him. He’s a great second unit defenceman. I don’t know if Ericsson is really going to get there or not and I don’t know enough about Kindl to know if he will either.
the thing is...
A do you really think Chicago/Nash is going to give up Kieth Seabrook or Weber? especically to a division rival. its not going to happen. Kaberle would probably the best defensman avail next year and they wont have to trade for him. also keep in mind that yeah his +/- isnt great but he is also playing on the Leafs. anyones +/- would suffer. im calling it now. Kaberle,if he makes it to FA. Will be in Detroit for the 2011-2012 season. (assuming Lidstrom retires.)
no, I don't think they would
That’s why I didn’t say them specifically, just those type of defensemen. Kaberle is an inigma. He is not a solid defenseman, he’s a marginal defenseman with an above average offensive side. Sure, he can move the puck, but you never hear about him being even good on his own side of the blueline. Also remember, he’s going to be 34 by the time the Wings sign him. We don’t need an old blueliner, we need a young one. A quick one. Sure, I would love Kaberle’s sight, he’s a good passer, but he’s slow. The Red Wings don’t like slow defensemen in their top two pairs unless they’re elite defensemen. Kaberle is not elite and definitely not worth the money he asks for.
I’d rather we trade for Pronger than sign Kaberle.
I’ll leave you at that while I hit my head against a wall for thinking about Pronger wearing a Winged Wheel.
